One of the most apparent truths about universities in this era is that student journalists have tended to exhibit the greatest courage and tenacity when it comes to applying their institutional mottos and academic lessons to the world.

The Student Journalists Who Never Let the Cornell Assault Case Go (Gift Article)
The student newspaper, The Cornell Daily Sun, covered the allegations of rape at a fraternity house since they were first made in 2024 and led the reporting on the case.

But also - For any written work where accuracy out the door is critical, which is a hell of a lot of the legal profession, the time gains involved in using LLMs are very limited by the need to find and catch the things like where it tells you that there are 2 Ls and 2 Ds in "Langdell."

The relevant section:
n 2017, the US Federal Communications Commission received 22 million comments about their proposal to repeal internet consumer protections known as net neutrality — but the vast majority of these comments were fake messages sent by bots. At the time, this sort of skullduggery was fairly easy to detect. No one was going to author 22 million different fake messages, so many of the messages were used thousands of times.

Today, that wouldn’t happen. With a push of a button, generative AI can write as many unique messages as one needs.

Representative democracy requires that voters be able to communicate their wants and needs to government officials. When computer systems are used to disrupt this process by diluting the true sentiments of the community amidst a tsunami of fake feedback, we suffer a man-in-the-middle attack on democracy. The 2017 net neutrality campaign was a crude example. Seven years later, LLMs facilitate much more sophisticated efforts. In addition to writing an endless volume of online comments, generative AI systems can create photorealistic images of constituents who don’t actually exist, and even place authentic-sounding voice calls to comment lines. The United States is particularly vulnerable because of scale. US congress members represent more people than in any other democracy save for India, precluding direct face-to-face communication let alone a system of personal relationships between voters and those they have elected.

I do like the taxonomy. One thing I wonder: A lot of these models are trained on non curated content available on the public internet. Wouldn't it make sense to also look at what can be done by targeted poisoning of that data?

Also I do hear Devs complain about slop. I also do hear them complain when books they wrote are used for training. I also hear them complain when AI is trained on all sorts of source code with unclear license provenance - and then used for code that before was written in clean room settings.

Developers may not complain, but their employers do have all sorts of barriers in place that prevent commercially important code to find it's way into models.
