Public Domain Art is the lifeblood of small tabletop rpgs, but it can be a nightmare trying to find the right art and license. This week, I’ve re-uploaded my old list from 2020 (with updates) of public domain websites. That's 500,000+ public domain paintings, photos, maps, and film. Link below 🔗👇

It is SO pretty. The worldbuilding is pretty cool as is the exploration of ideas (dodging spoilers here haha) but the art is so just both charmingly cute and elegant and powerful in places! Kinda makes me wanna dig out my pens again.

But today I'm drawing tubes of glowing science goo and it's hard not to smile about that! I don't know how long I can stay afloat doing art, and sometimes it's real rough. But some days there's science goo and that's worth getting out of bed for!

Just pushed my laptop back to give my current commission a critical all-over look before I wander off to eat food, and well... Life is stressful and it's such a hard time to be an artist rn and everything I do feels a little extra fraught because of that and so I can be a little extra hard on me.

It's officially Autumn, and nothing's better than a cozy slumber party while the nights get longer and cooler! What does your character wear to the slumber party, and as a bonus, is it seasonally festive? 🎃🍂🕯️ #OCSLUMBERPARTY #art

because films are hugely collaborative. So in burying the memory and work of deeply shitty people you also have to bury the work of decent or even good people who also contributed to the works that fired up our imaginations. It's rough! I wish you good luck with your project tho!

110

Mags Malarkey @magsmalarkey.bsky.social · 17/09/2026

It doesn't sound like you are being dismissive! I think for some people "enough" swings around to trying to bury anything with a dark side, even if everyone involved is well past an ability to do more harm or be harmed. I think film, as a medium, makes this especially complicated (cont...)

history is full of cool/important/influential stuff made by bad people. this is one of the things you have to sit with and come to terms with if you want to engage with history and write about it. film studies is rife with awful people making amazing art! it's rough sometimes!

Some of the problem is The Economy and shite minimum wage and other labor issues. Because freelancing has always been risky but it shouldn't be this risky for folks getting regular-ish work AND running Patreons AND selling merch on the side, yanno?

020

Mags Malarkey @magsmalarkey.bsky.social · 21/08/2026

it's like everyone is my mom going "well can't you get a Real Job and do art on the side?" and no, Art is A Real Job. I shouldn't have to have a 9-5 or a spouse or a sympathetic parent or a trust fund in order for MY JOB to keep me afloat.

1205

Mags Malarkey @magsmalarkey.bsky.social · 21/08/2026

I can see why that might be reassuring to some folks, but boy howdy the underlying message is "it's okay that art can't pay your bills!" and that points to a much bigger problem where art is treated as a side hustle at best and folks resist paying well for art.

alt idea: I was obsessed w/ a subgenre of books I call "Divorce & Ghosts" where kids navigate family issues and also there is a ghost. I think as a solo or small group game, navigating one-off scenarios where you try to balance Ghost Problems and Family Problems could make for a fun ttrpg.

121

Mags Malarkey @magsmalarkey.bsky.social · 19/08/2026

The Chronicles of Amber (I read them when I was like 10 or 11, lmao) and I'm pretty sure there already at least one ttrpg but if I had the game design chops I'd love to do some sort of goofy vaguely high-concept sort of thing with it.

Title:
Who is Haunting The Library of Forbidden Tomes?

Image: five panels showing characters in a gothic library

22% - tormented souls, frozen between life and death (a ghost reading a book)
4% - dank, fetid horrors from the icy depths below (a black slug like creature with a single eyestalk reading a book)
15% - cold, lifeless bones possessed by a corrupt sorcery (a skeleton reading a book)
11% - frigid and malevolent ectoplasmic vapours (a shapeless apparition reading a book)
48% - regular readers happy to away from the heatwave

This reminds me that we read so few fun books or comedies that when we got a "analyze this passage for what makes it funny and explain in an essay" question I, a person w/ 0 test anxiety, briefly went "BUT WE NEVER STUDIED THIS!!" for a minute and some of my peers were quite tilted about it.

000

Mags Malarkey @magsmalarkey.bsky.social · 05/08/2026

But, like, some portion of classes need to involve books kids might actually enjoy reading and discussing. You can analyze even a mid book! (heck you can analyze terrible books!) Plus having permission to find fault w/ a book because it's not a Sacred Classic is going to be more engaging for some!

120

Mags Malarkey @magsmalarkey.bsky.social · 05/08/2026

I do think there is some value in reading books about difficult things, provided your english teacher can actually teach and discuss the difficult matters in the books! And English class should be a place where teachers guide you thru books w/ outdated language and concepts for the first time.

120

Mags Malarkey @magsmalarkey.bsky.social · 05/08/2026

Anyway, I think a lot of people who give awards and make reading lists tend to equate serious/depressing/difficult topics with literary/educational/social value. As if people can't learn anything of merit from a book that is fun and accessible for kids to read.

Forever grateful for the boss who took heatsickness seriously & spent like a month bustling around taking temp readings & hassling the main branch until our AC was fixed & running to keep us at ~70F/21C so folks doing physical work didn't overheat even if that meant the cubicle folks were chilly.
