Gleninagh Castle • The Burren • County Clare This towerhouse was built by the O’Loughlins who called themselves the ‘Princes of the Burren’. When it was originally rendered and whitewashed, it would have made a distinctive landmark on the grey rocky shore of the Burren. #Ireland #SpéirGhorm

The internet is something sometimes: my mother took this picture in 1988 and Instagram has just dropped it into my life again. The milkman's name was Eamonn and he was lovely. He picked up the extra bottles when she asked him to pose.

On May 7, 1988, many people took pictures that they felt showed the spirit of Ireland in their daily lives. These photos were sent to judges, who chose the best ones for a book called “One Day for Life in Ireland - Photographs by the People of Ireland, Taken on a Single Day.”

The book has many brilliant photos, some worth digitising. We previously posted a selection of dog photos, and now we share eleven photos of people at work.

Back in 1988, the book’s royalties supported the Irish Cancer Society, which marked its Silver Jubilee that year. Today, you can easily donate online to the Irish Cancer Society @irishcancersociety
