I'm all for holistic design. Maybe we get matched trash/recycle cans but nothing like that Autopoia shot!

My 8th grader is looking for a Disney theme park-related topic for a research paper. He's previously done papers on: - History of EPCOT - History/Conversion of Splash Mountain to whatever it is now Suggestions on topics that have good amount of references for citations? (that rules out trash cans)

Sure, it’s Disneyland’s birthday, but here in the Midwest there’s only one castle that truly matters... the Mars Cheese Castle. 🧀🏰
A tall roadside sign reading “Mars Cheese Castle” stands on bright red poles against a blue sky with scattered clouds. The words “Mars” and “Castle” appear in white letters on black panels, while “Cheese” is in yellow letters on red panels. Below the sign is a parking lot with several vehicles, including a dark SUV and a white truck. In the background, grassy fields, a few trees, and a nearby highway are visible.A castle-like building with Mars Cheese Castle sign

“The decal gives these units more theming than Magic Kingdom’s debut cans, which arrived in plain, unthemed housing.” Unthemed trash IS the theme of the Magic Kingdom, unfortunately 😡

Heights make sense. It's how deep the can goes that is the difference with these. The design is modeled after the old Mills Engineering “Model H" (www.magicaltrash.com/post/6608869...), which ran around 25 gallon capacity. The full size is in the 35 gallon range. So I guess, it's a "70% Can"? 😀

Defensible argument. I tend to bundle half sizes into 2 categories. There are the traditional ones we often think about - full sized can sliced down the middle. Then there are half sizes - with flat or angle tops - that have full width but their compactness comes from reduced depth.

Half-cans turn up wherever space runs tight. Queue lines, treehouse walkways, attraction exits. Low profile by design. Easy to miss by default. Disneyland Paris' Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse, in full Adventureland motif. 📷 | Kristof Thijs / Photos Magiques. Used by Permission.

Still one of WDW’s most visually interesting trash cans, this Columbia Harbour House set bridges 2 generations of MK design, pairing modern inlet doors with classic riveted trim. And that logo… no notes. 🌐 | buff.ly/l8IERK5 📷 | @mrepcot.bsky.social Used by Permission. #MagicalTrash #Disney

Solar panels sit on the rounded top. That curved profile discourages guests from resting things on it. A reasonable deterrent for a behavior that probably shouldn't need deterring. (Respect the cans, people!)

A few details worth noting: the inlet handle is gone on these updated units. The foot pedal is the sole point of operation. The inlet door is dark blue, matching the can sides, with a simple TRASH label and icon.

That shield design first appeared in 2017, replacing the original "Waste Please" look that dated to opening day: buff.ly/GrDOzPE The update was a mixed result on standard cans. On a compactor body, it holds up reasonably well.

But now, mid-2026, they're back! The Germany unit had no theming at all. These American Adventure cans are different. The '76 shield decal is applied to the front, consistent with standard cans in the pavilion. They look like they belong there.

A solar-powered Bigbelly trash compactor can at Epcot's American Adventure pavilion. The can has dark navy blue side panels and a rounded silver top housing the solar panel. The front face is cream-colored with a dark blue rectangular inlet door bearing a small trash can icon and the word "TRASH" in white. Below the inlet door, a gold and navy 1776 patriotic shield decal is centered on the cream panel, featuring the number 76, three stars, and red and white vertical stripes. A white foot pedal is visible at the base. In the background, the American Adventure pavilion entrance sign and colonial-style architecture are visible, along with a banner advertising the "Portraits of Courage" exhibit.
