Harvard is removing Mary T. Bassett as director of the FXB Center for Health and Human Rights amid sustained political pressure over the center’s work on Israel and Palestine, the Harvard Crimson reports.

FXB became a flashpoint after Oct. 7 for its Palestine Program and an academic partnership with Birzeit University in the occupied West Bank, which critics including Republican lawmakers and former Harvard president Larry Summers falsely framed as Hamas-linked. The Trump administration later demanded an external audit and froze federal funding after Harvard refused. Harvard then suspended the Birzeit partnership and placed FXB under review, while an internal antisemitism task force accused its work of “demonizing” Israel.

Bassett, a physician and former NYC health commissioner whose work centered humanitarian public health and global inequality, is the latest leader pushed out as Harvard has also removed or sidelined leaders at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies and the Divinity School’s Religion, Conflict, and Peace Initiative. An example of some of her writing 👇

On August 2, we commemorate Sinti and Roma Holocaust victims. FXB Director of the Roma Program for Health and Human Rights, @magdamatache.bsky.social, wrote about her experiences researching this old trope and its consequences on Al Jazeera: tinyurl.com/yfxse24f   2024 report: hsph.me/Roma-Canada
While some official statements and ceremonies that commemorate the Holocaust acknowledge its Roma and Sinti victims – such as during the recent 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz – many institutions still depict and distance them as part of a separate genocide or as “other victims” of Nazi regimes. In part, this stems from the racist myth of criminality that accompanied the campaign of mass extermination of Romani people and the telling of history afterwards. May 16 each year marks #RomaResistanceDay in remembrance of the 600 Roma and Sinti prisoners, held by the Nazi regime in Auschwitz-Birkenau, who refused to be executed that day and barricaded themselves in camp barracks. 2024 exhibition: tinyurl.com/46s9vtnw MEMOROBIA project: tinyurl.com/yc4jscmy
Romanian Roma self-taught artist Emanuel Barica captured the portraits of Roma and Sinti survivors of the Holocaust who did not “let the abuse they suffered define them as victims, but as warriors who stood up and confronted everyday injustice and the horrific cruelty of the Nazi regime. The persecution of Roma – and Roma history in general – is often marginalized and forgotten, lacking the recognition it deserves. Focusing on Roma agency, the life stories of these 23 Roma heroes not only stand as testimony to a painful past but point us to lessons that we can learn from those whose humanity remained strong even as fascism and barbarity swept through Europe.”
