DC-based technical analyst, I study that which should never be used. All opinions my own, but you probably shouldn't trust me anyways.

The two go-tos I usually send people are the Darrell Owens piece: darrellowens.substack.com/p/vacant-nua... & The GGWash article: ggwash.org/view/97898/d...

Vacant Nuance in the Vacant Housing Debate
We should want more/less vacancies depending on the kind of vacancies we're talking about but nobody likes to specify

It's honestly shocking the people who do (and don't!!) get the reference. Like at some point we're going to have a millennial president make this joke and half the room will groan, the other half will be very confused

If conservatives didn't exoticsize California as a terrible heathen place people would quickly realize how messed up their states are! Like yes California isn't perfect but it's genuinely still better than most of the US!

I can't speak for my LGBTQ+ friends but I have heard many, many stories of brandishing and threats of violence that closely parallel this. The far right seems to be just drooling over the opportunity to open fire.

Oh, this is totally true yes. My comments were specifically re: as a mechanism to preserve domestic industry for e.g. national security purposes

Eh, it's not terrible imo. Much better than tariffs at keeping domestic industry alive.

Ah, but most of those people moved to cities and not "real" america. Real america, where you die of alcoholism and depression after your kids all leave your shitty town that's been destroyed by auto dependence, poverty, and addiction.

DC/DMV is an interesting case study because right now brand-new houses are selling for cheaper than used almost like developers aren't the problem here because their profit incentive is to build housing even as the price declines!

Sorry but don't most workers who live outside of DC contribute very little to the city balances? Like either we build more housing or raise taxes, jobs are not the issue?

It's an excellent book, really. Always amazing how the conversations of the cold war parallel those of today re: academic freedom vs security

It's truly so sad. Our grandparents tried to speedrun social democracy, now they're trying to speedrun stupidity. Only a few years away from our own Kansas experiment en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kansas_...

The really concerning part is who comes next. Nobody at the state level inspires confidence, particularly if someone like Rick Becker gets in (tea party and far right adjacent)

North Dakota (my old state) has just a string of incompetent nincompoops running for office. Fedorchak isn't terrible but Armstrong was just a total idiot.

This is one of the often cited ways that California was able to quickly build housing in the 1970s! You could essentially walk into a bank as a random person with a plot and walk out with financing and the plans to build a small apartment building!

An interesting tidbit - I assume the rightmost bar is slightly higher because of heat pumps, which have greater than 100% efficiency at heating? In theory electricity can be above 100% overall!

None of y'all are ready for the truth nuke that many farmers view institutional investors from NYC positively. After all, these people are against the estate tax. They think their kids should inherit farmland for generations even with no connection to ag!

Genuinely one of the reasons I hate working in the suburbs is the weird stigma around bringing in bags/bike gear Literally nobody cares downtown, there's literally a storage cubby outside the office for everyone's bags! Exact same agency

These things are actually one and the same, I'm afraid. "Corporate" farms are almost all family owned. Just a distinction of whether you own your land or rent it from your neighbors.

This is true, but their numbers aren't exactly promising either. I suppose my question is mainly whether Amtrak has the money/resources to take over the line as necessary or if someone else will have to do so...

In prior admins the value of DOE was proving hard facts. We have the national labs and have the receipts re: decent scientific analysis and research across many disciplines! I really, really do worry that has been constrained by this admin tbh. How can you report facts if Wright won't back you?

I have a Bolt! Sadly my job got relocated away from transit but I basically just use it for commuting, transit/bikeshare everything else. It's a perfect commuter car, just grinds through miles and only needs a regular outlet to charge because it's so efficient.

Ozone generator! Not great to use too frequently (can degrade plastics over time) and you have to be away for a number of hours to let the ozone disappate afterwards but it's what hotels use to remove the smell of smoke from rooms.

I'm willing to entertain the idea that there is an "alignment" problem where the model doesn't follow instructions. But also, I think the people giving OpenClaw (or any LLM harness) sudo permissions are nuts and would never allow them access to my systems.

Yup, reading the actual report (and knowing a bit about how Kali can already automate a TON of tasks) it really seems like a nothingburger to me. "Oh it did all this strange emergent behavior" what it did is literally less functional than an agentic workflow or just a model with more tokens!

During the new Acela rollout I had the chance to chat with some amtrak folks about this and it was genuinely a bizarre conversation. Like there was genuinely no interest in electrification aside from an "oddity" of the NEC.
