I LOVE how @propublica.org dealt with official comment here, editorially and stylistically.
The Trump administration says none of this is happening.

"DHS is NOT arresting U.S. citizens by mistake." "There are no 'indiscriminate' stops." Allegations of "racial profiling are disgusting, reckless and categorically FALSE." "The pattern is NOT of law enforcement using force." "ICE does not zip tie or restrain children."

But that is precisely what is happening, and at a far larger scale than previously reported.

Human beings don't age uniformly, which means age limits on jobs (political and otherwise) are a poor solution. I rant on this subject at the Treehouse Writers blog. treehousewriters.com/wp53/2026/09...

Overheard on the streets of downtown San Francisco, from a young guy in a tracksuit yelling at his cell phone: “do you understand that every single fucking government in the world knows who I am?” If true, this does not sound to me like an enviable thing.

Agree. I lived in NYC at the time. So many little corner shops run by Indians and Pakistanis nearly went out of business because non-immigrants judged the shopkeepers by their skin color and labeled them all “enemies”. The great unity people keep talking about was not so all-inclusive as they claim.

Happy Labour Day. Solidarity. (art by @rlmartstudio.bsky.social)
A pro-labour poster, with text at top 'The Labor Movement! The folks that brought you ...' Underneath are stylized drawings of people of various ages, genders, and ethnicities holding signs reading 'overtime pay', 'living wage laws', 'parental leave', 'civil rights', 'domestic partner benefits', social security, child labour laws, paid vacations, pension benefits, OSHA, grievance procedures, workplace power, health benefits, workers comp, minimum wage, farm labor rights, unemployment insurance, the weekend.

Below is a quote: 'Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will' - Frederick Douglass.

Hmmm. It has good- and bad-guys with enough shades of gray not to move in head-pat country. Well done, slightly over-the-top action sequences. Twisty enough. It has a sense of humor, esp. Alan Ritchson, who makes Reacher aware that he’s an unusual guy in the moral universe?

This isn’t to say that the print runs—even for the time—were not small, and that she wasn’t badly treated by at least one publisher. But the process of creating a physical book was very different in 1810, and limited the number of books that would have been produced.

Mechanically assisted production of books doesn’t start until the late 1820s. Mechanized sewing of signatures doesn’t come in until the 1880s. Cloth covered book board was still being developed as a process, so “cheap” editions were covered in paper. Even then, books were labor intensive. 2/3

Bear in mind that each of Austen’s books would have been hand-assembled and bound—books were often sold unbound so you could have the binding match your collection. Even the ready-to-read books were hand-folded and hand sewn, bound and finished. Even a “cheap” copy would have been expensive. 1/3

I mask on public transit and—at least in San Francisco—I’m not the only one. I’d estimate sbout 10% of the riders do. Still I am bemused that there are still some among that 10% who don’t seem to know that their noses should be -inside- the mask. Oh well.
