Human beings don't age uniformly, which means age limits on jobs (political and otherwise) are a poor solution. I rant on this subject at the Treehouse Writers blog. treehousewriters.com/wp53/2026/09...

Overheard on the streets of downtown San Francisco, from a young guy in a tracksuit yelling at his cell phone: “do you understand that every single fucking government in the world knows who I am?” If true, this does not sound to me like an enviable thing.

Agree. I lived in NYC at the time. So many little corner shops run by Indians and Pakistanis nearly went out of business because non-immigrants judged the shopkeepers by their skin color and labeled them all “enemies”. The great unity people keep talking about was not so all-inclusive as they claim.

Happy Labour Day. Solidarity. (art by @rlmartstudio.bsky.social)
A pro-labour poster, with text at top 'The Labor Movement! The folks that brought you ...' Underneath are stylized drawings of people of various ages, genders, and ethnicities holding signs reading 'overtime pay', 'living wage laws', 'parental leave', 'civil rights', 'domestic partner benefits', social security, child labour laws, paid vacations, pension benefits, OSHA, grievance procedures, workplace power, health benefits, workers comp, minimum wage, farm labor rights, unemployment insurance, the weekend.

Below is a quote: 'Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will' - Frederick Douglass.

I mask on public transit and—at least in San Francisco—I’m not the only one. I’d estimate sbout 10% of the riders do. Still I am bemused that there are still some among that 10% who don’t seem to know that their noses should be -inside- the mask. Oh well.

The end of an era: today I gave my rapier and dagger (both stage combat weapons with bated points) to my older daughter. She is hopping with delight; a friend of hers noted that a fondness for edged-weapon combat appears to be genetic. Swash, buckle, repeat.

This was written in the late 1990s. I had lost the file, and frankly thought I might have imagined I'd written the whole thing. And then last week, looking for something entirely else, I found it. I've softened a little bit on Marmee: Abba Alcott was doing the best she could in very trying circumstances (don't get me started on Bronson Alcott, The Man and the Ego).

The Rental Family is just a delightful film. Very few laugh-out-loud moments, but so much thoughtful humor. Brendan Fraser is wonderful, but so is Akira Emoto, as an elderly actor, and Shannon Marina Gorman, as a schoolgirl whose father Fraser pretends to be. No explosions, just kindness and wit.
