Several years ago I was writing a novel, and I could feel it. Between two sentences of that book, right after the period, was a space. I put my finger on that space, and I felt it. Another book! And this one was that unborn book, that I had to write.

“If you’re very very good before you die, you could be a saint while you’re alive,” Holger suggested. Jo said, “No, the Holy Father in Rome has to do something.” “What if you’re very very good but the Holy Father doesn’t know about it?” “That’s not going to be a problem for you two,” Mom broke in.

The snippet of the day is from THE COBRA MARKED KING: From the breast of his silk robe the visitor drew a scroll. It was tied with scarlet cord and the knots were sealed with wax. He held this up to Zed. Very slowly my stepson took it. “In nine years,” he said, “no one has spoken my true name.”

Writing as fast as I can, and I have to go back every now and then when I realize I left something out. Everything needs to be adjusted for maximal embarrassment and stress, and the tsouris has to steadily rise. Anything I get in now, early, can be built upon in a pleasing way.

This first book is erected upon the firm foundation of HAMLET and, to some extent, THE TEMPEST. The next book will obviously draw upon THE TEMPEST some more, but will also drag in ROMEO & JULIET. And it came to me. The third book will be rooted in KING LEAR. And, if I can work it, AS YOU LIKE IT.

Very proud of my English major self. I have titled a chapter "Some Enterprise That Hath a Stomach In It". It is a magnificently appropriate title in a novel that has the complete plot of HAMLET, all 5 acts, in it. The novel itself will be titled A KNIGHT IN HER BASEMENT.

Today's snippet: “I yield, Sir Ogier. You have defeated me.” “Good.” He took her hand and hauled her to her feet. “And you’ve been holding back,” she accused. “All this time. Don’t deny it!” “Of course I’m holding back. I outweigh you by a hundred pounds. I could throw you across this room.”

In the snippet of the day, my heroine, a brunette with short hair, contemplates the boyfriend: The man was utterly courageous. But he had all the flaws of a perfect knight. He could be coaxed into doing something stupid, especially by a slender lady with long blonde braids that fell past her waist.

Elsewhere, I described my writing method: I rely upon inspiration. Every morning the Muse leaves a chunk of novel on my pillow at 6 a.m., and I get up and write it down. But this works only because I have an eight-cylinder imagination with manual overdrive and rocket assist.
