To conclude an already too long thread, I remember saying to myself a while ago that Silent Hill f was the first great Silent Hill game we've gotten since 3 (no, I did not make a typo. I mean 3, not 4) and it will probably be the last one we ever get. Townfall has, sadly, not dissuaded me on that.

If there is one thing I loved about Townfall's gameplay, it is the puzzles. This game's puzzles are legitimately great. They are well constructed fun brainteasers that do a good job of being challenging but fair. Considering the devs also made Stories Untold, this is not at all surprising.

NOW, with that said, it's not all bad! The game's got great visuals and use of color, and the medical horror with the environments and monster designs are very well done (except for that one enemy whose design and symbolism are so insanely heavy handed it's not even funny).

Somehow, I feel like as time goes on, this idea that Townfall is "tense" or "scary" is really not going to hold up to scrutiny at all. And yes, I understand that fear is subjective and I am admittedly pretty numb to most horror games these days.

It's predictable, it's not fun, and it's not scary. Later enemy encounters also have really obnoxious enemy placement (especially with that one particular enemy) and poor cover, helped in no small part by the enemies that move so erratically you're all but guaranteed to get spotted.

I can't begin to count the number of times I would hide in a closet when an enemy was approaching, only for them to do the same shit of walking directly up to the closet and waiting for a good 30 seconds before leaving. Like...thanks for being so blatant that you're wasting my time, videogame.

The gameplay is such a mixed bag. On the one hand, you have Alien: Isolation style sneaking and hiding with combat being treated as a last resort. This works fine at the start, but eventually, it gets really tedious and annoying. Especially when that one enemy shows up. If you know, you know.

Simon is such a nothing protagonist who has no real character to him other than what everyone else projects onto him. He doesn't display much of any personality until the very tail end of the story, in which his sudden "resolute attitude" is so abrupt and out of nowhere.

The story is extremely boring and keeps gesturing at a grand promise of a huge mystery with big reveals, but all it really amounts to is characters saying the same things to each other almost verbatim until the last third where its "big reveal" is so underwhelming it's honestly impressive.

Really cool how after getting killed by the invincible one-hit-kill enemy, the game revives me right on top of said invincible one-hit-kill enemy and I just die again. I was actually enjoying playing Townfall at first, but man this game takes a sharp downward turn in quality after a while.

Not gonna lie, Silent Hill: Townfall has been slowly losing me more and more as the game goes on. What started rather promising has devolved into really obnoxious encounter design and a go-nowhere story where characters have the same exact conversation ad nauseum.

Thoughts like "I'm not good at anything" are insidious. It's held me back a lot from trying things I wanted to try. When I actually decided "fuck it, we ball" and tried those things? I surprised myself at how capable I actually was. Those thoughts don't go away, even though I know they're false.

I've been feeling for a while that consoles are on the way out. We're also seeing more and more games that were originally console exclusives get modern Steam ports, so why waste money on worse alternatives.

Playing Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, and while I enjoy the game in general, it does not give me a minute of silence. There is constantly, and I mean really constantly, someone talking. Either the protagonist or one of the companions. Not even something interesting, just what I see, what I do or what I have to do. "Hurry", "Be careful", "This looks interesting", ...

It got so bad in the later chapters I had to mute it in the menu.

Why can't the game give me a minute to enjoy the scenery or let the world speak for itself. Do people really enjoy this?
