Excuse me but a thousand spy thrillers have led me to believe that there are secret agencies all over the world dedicated to preventing evil and taking down despots and tyrants so where TF are they is all I wanna know. Jason Bourne, I'd like to talk to you about your car's extended warranty.

So basically I think absolutely everything happening right now can be boiled down to: white cishet men now have to actually provide value - to employers, to partners - to be considered for the job/partner, because there are other options, and they cannot handle it. At all.

People in TV shows are constantly een to be having wine or a drink at home alone with music playing. Is this a thing people do? Like the TV isn't on, are they just sitting there? I often have a drink at home, or listen to music, but there's always a 3rd thing also happening. TV or chores or whatevs.

Increasingly frustrated with articles like "Trump signs EO saying X, but experts say that this isn't true" like DO YOU THINK HE CARES. None of them care what is true, supportable, legal, or accurate. You think he'll be like "Oh wait, my bad, never mind?" When you point out that he's full of shit??

Posit: A big contributing factor to *gestures at everything* is the cultural attitude, seen in every cop and action movie/show, that people who follow the rules and safeguard people's rights are stodgy, boring and definitely not on the side of the heroes.

To everyone yelling that Trump's so dumb and all this stuff is going to alienate his voters: THEY DON'T CARE. Because - listen carefully - THEY NEVER INTEND TO HOLD ELECTIONS AGAIN, and if they do, they will be for show and the results will not matter. They'll be faked or ignored.

Just for the record, I don't need to watch any videos or read any articles about how Trump is like Hitler or how the US is teetering on the edge of disintegration. I've been well aware of both for 8 years.

if they want to go back to the 1950s, we’re bringing the cuisine back to the 1950s too. you put me in the kitchen, I will spend 100% of my time in there finding how much horseradish and shrimp I can put in Jello before God personally comes down here to stop me.

When other countries say stuff like "Well, all of France protested in Paris and toppled [Regime!] Why aren't you?" I'm like...do you get that we physically can't do that? Do you have any conception of the size and scope of this fucking country? We can't get our whole pop into one city.

I don't talk hockey much on here but last night the Blue Jackets' sophomore 3rd round pick Adam Fantilli scored his first NHL hat trick in Toronto, WHERE HE'S FROM (sort of), with like 100 family and friends watching, PLUS his first shorty. I JUST HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS ABOUT ADAM FANTILLI OK

Dear grownups: stop telling each other to "look for the helpers." That's something Mr. Rogers said to tell children who were afraid. If you're an adult, you are supposed to BE the helpers.

Came across this comment on a post about Pentatonix singing the national anthem: "Our anthem is so beautiful, they don't need to embellish it." Excuse me? Our anthem is HORRIBLE. It's a terrible song to sing, has weird intervals, is in nobody's range, and is generally awful. It's just familiar.

I'm a writer, reader, former bookseller, and I'm irrationally irritated by book fetishism. Having a bunch of books is not a personality, or a sign of high intellect. Books are not sacred objects. A physical book is not superior to an ebook. You're not special for "loving that book smell." Stop it.

The post-Christmas malaise is strong when you're sitting at home in your bathrobe pondering what you can get from Kroger so you can make the $35 minimum for free grocery delivery because you need one (1) onion to make chow mein.

@joescott.bsky.social Hey Joe, new listener & Nebula subscriber. You've expressed shock at that 600K people reported missing annually? It's misleading. Only about 5% of those STAY missing. Most are back within 24. That 600K includes kids who get lost at the mall for 2 hours but the cops get called.

I feel like everyone who knows Hamilton well has a few persistent lyrics that pop up randomly. Mine are "Pick a place to die where it's high and dry" from "Ten Duel Commandments" and "Should we honor our treaty, King Louis' head?/Uhh, do whatever you want, I'm super dead" from Cabinet Battle #2

Welp looks like everyone's gotten the intel that our admin's (department-paid-for) holiday candy basket has the Reese's peanut butter cup trees. PICKED CLEAN. Had to settle for a York patty. Ah well. More datapoints that Reese's is the king of all candy. Oh, and nobody likes candy canes.

Ok I have zero interest in Wicked and don't really care about Broadway much but I've heard bits of it and goddamn but Cynthia Erivo singing "So if you care to find me, look to the western sky" is some kind of soul-stirring black magic.

I mean, if even a guy from the right-wing corporate-bootlicker "let the market decide" side of the political aisle is mad enough about healthcare - a traditionally progressive talking point - to take up arms about it, what does that say?

Who do I thank for the construction "it's giving [whatever]" because it's so useful and concise and I love it. My first instinct was "drag queens" but historical precedent makes me think they probably got it from black people.

Holy cow, truth bombs from Reddit: "Bullying is so hard to stop because bullies are often acting as proxies for the adults, enforcing the societal/patriarchal norms on non-conforming kids. So the adults in charge subconsciously view it as bullies "fixing" other kids." (u/rain-dog2, paraphrased)

Earlier today I was reminded of the Sister Hazel song "All For You" and for reasons passing all understanding, decided to pull it up to listen to. Then, possessed by some self-destructive impulse, I set Spotify to play a radio station based on it. Friends, I chose...poorly. 1/6

I rewatched Jenny Nicholson's four-hour Galactic Starcruiser video again today because that's how I roll, and am I just weird or does anyone else find that whole concept not appealing in the least? I don't want to roleplay or do immersive games. I don't want to "live my own SW adventure."

It's been like 30 years but I'm still absolutely agog that anyone, having any awareness of the circumstances, could possibly buy that John and Patsey Ramsey killed JonBenet. The scenarios you have to concoct to make that true are so ludicrous it boggles the mind. Pondering writing a thread about it.

Every time I go up to Wisconsin for a visit, I turn into the New Glarus Brewing Company Express. Friends put in orders for what they want brought back. (If you aren't aware, NGBC only sells in Wisconsin. They do not ship or distribute). I usually end up returning with a wayback full of Spotted Cow.

A significant part of the US population lives in abject, mortal terror that somewhere, somehow, someone who they deem Undeserving may be receiving a benefit. This terror informs a depressing percentage of our public policy.

Are you looking for a holiday album to play on repeat (in a retail environment, or just wherever?) I recommend Los Straitjackets' holiday albums. They're a 3-man surf guitar combo. We played them at Borders when I worked there and it was the ONLY Xmas album I didn't actively loathe by Xmas.

I've been bingeing "S.W.A.T" (which is honestly better than it has any business being) and was poleaxed by an unexpected truth bomb. Characters are discussing a hate crime: Chris: Where do you think this hate comes from? Hondo: For some people it's just the easiest way to feel. BAM.

Just a note for readers of my UBI thread who have (valid) questions about how exactly this would work. The nuts and bolts, the consequences, the pitfalls. I have no idea. I am not an economist. Those are just my top-level thoughts on the idea of UBI, not a plan for how to implement it.
