Just back from Dominik Diamond Sings The Video Games. Having spent five years editing (excessive) dick jokes out of his columns, it was enormous fun to see him let loose on stage @dominikdiamond.bsky.social

Beggars belief that this is not only as good as Children of Time, but perhaps even slightly better? This is fast becoming an all time favourite series. Saying anything specific about it at all feels like ruining the magic but it is SO clever, unpredictable, imaginative and occasionally horrifying

Books of 2026: The Castle by Jon Ronson. Bought this less than 48 hours ago and totally demolished it. So very readable, as you'd expect from Ronson. Though it did leave me (more?) depressed about the consequence-free lives of the ultra rich

Happy 25th birthday to the Nintendo GameCube, the first games console I bought with my own money. I started saving up for it the month I bought this issue of Edge, nearly a year previously. What a cover!

This was brilliant! Chinese historical fiction/fantasy in which a peasant girl rejects her pitiful fate and steals another's. Epic, powerful, tragic, very queer

Six months of Super Nintendo! And it's my birthday this week! This book is the culmination of 20 years' work as a games journalist - all the time I've spent interviewing Nintendo creatives and thinking deeply about games and the place they occupy in our lives. Books of 2026: I love that this surprisingly comforting sci-fi book was originally Kickstarted (by like 57 people) and self published. Becky Chambers is now a famously beloved author. Make the thing! It just might find its people!

My son has finally completed Sneaky Sasquatch after nearly 500 hours of play, beginning when he was a tiny guy who couldn't even read yet but was delighted by Sasquatch's gleefully greedy eating animation. (He's 9 now.) I hope that every game has at least one child who loves it this much.

Books of 2026: this was just extraordinary. Hard to believe that it came from a human imagination. I was repulsed, I was awed, I was moved to learn things about evolutionary biology, I was very sad when it was over.

Been racing through more Becky Chambers books. Extraordinary, surprising, humane and vivid sci-fi. This one is so good I immediately bought a second copy to gift to a friend. (Except I have ADHD, so immediately forgot, and then ordered another three on separate occasions, so now I have 5 copies 🙃)

I have been re-reading the original edition of my first book, You Died, which came out ten years ago this month. I wrote it with Jason Killingsworth in what felt like one long delirious crunch period. There's a lot I had forgotten, including this line that we put at the end of the acknowledgements:

Beloved internet, please help me. I recognise this guy. It's the head of a mascot costume, with headphones on. I cannot place the character but I remember him as a cartoon character with a yellow t-shirt over a long white shirt and baggy jeans, 00s style. WHO IS HE, it's driving me nuts

Books of 2026: devoured this. More queer history, but historical fiction this time, set in early 1800s London. A vivid imagining of secret gay English life. Pulls off a gasp-worthy surprise ending.

Next book of 2026: Queen James (on audio). Come for the queer history (nobody ever told me King James VI/I was bisexual and homoromantic in history class), stay for the murders, double-crosses, religious in-fighting and ceaseless plotting that define this era of the Scottish and British past

Belated start to a books of 2026 thread, because the horrors just keep coming. First up: Spent by Alison Bechdel. Not as totally essential as Fun Home (her masterpiece, it would be *anyone's* masterpiece) but still a wonderfully observed piece of autofiction, highly recommend
