I'm reading Nick Fuller Googins' #CliFi novel The Great Transition, which is set in the near future after climate collapse has destroyed much of the world as we it know today. The characters keep referring to "climate criminals" and "the destroying class", which sounds about right to me.
Hardcover copy of the book The Great Transition by Nick Fuller Googins. Vast pink and purple clouds over an ocean dotted with small floating structures and thin strips of islands. A city in the distance. A quote printed on the cover reads "Electrifying. I can't remember ever being more impressed with a first novel." Willima Kent Krueger.

Katydids so cool. Lookit this sentient leaf. And I didn't even get the full length of those magnificent antannae in the shot. 💚
A bright green katydid stands on pavement; had they been on a branch they'd be almost invisible, they look so much like a leaf.

Bit of a storm here in Toronto. The Finch West LRT is at a stand still due to branches and other debris on the tracks. This was the view out the window a short time ago.

Update - realized shortly after posting that carefully-aligned dots were taking a long time and since it's temporary anyway I was missing out on an opportunity to Make Bad Art. Switched to squiggles and pet portraits (important thing is to check at the end that I have no gaps bigger than 2 inches).
Very sloppy drawings of cats and a rabbit on a window that is reflecting trees. Spaces between the drawings are being filled in with squiggly lines.

Enter the $7 pack of kids markers and a stencil made from cereal box cardboard. Some colours definitely work better than others (purple is the current winner), and it obviously won't last through the season, but for the next week or two I'm hoping this will help keep a few more birds safe. 4/4

Ah, the weekend. Time to draw all over our new apartment's windows. I hadn't pegged our new rental as high risk for #birds flying into the windows because the balcony is deep, but earlier this week when I went out in the morning there was a warbler sitting on the cement under one of our chairs. 1/4

We just moved and have only set up one cat bed so far. This is how that's going.
One cat lays comfortably asleep on a pet bed. Another lays with his butt up on the corner of the same bed and his chest and face on the floor. At least there is a soft blanket under his front half.

I love the library but it also keeps costing me money. I checked out The Omnivore's Deception by @jsanbonmatsu.bsky.social but was taking *so many* notes from this truly insightful and well-written book about our broken relationship with #animals that I finally gave up and ordered my own copy.

Most evenings I sit in this armchair and George hops up onto what we now call his petting stool. Earlier this week I laid on the couch instead, which is where I was when I took this picture. I'm not sure if this was just a hint or if he was actually trying to will me into the chair with his mind.

It's the start of National Wildlife Week in Canada and the start of spring migration, so it's the perfect time to make sure your windows are as bird-friendly as they can be. This great poster by @rosemarymosco.com summarizes the problem of window collisions; learn what you can do at birdsafe.ca
A poster by Bird and Moon for Flap dot org. In a comic-style format, a bird explains for humans that window collisions kill billions of birds worldwide each year. Birds don't really get windows, and instead see a safe space past the glass, reflected outdoor plants, a reflected rival bird (themselves), or outdoor plants viewed through transparent corner windows. What can you do? There are cheap, easy, attractive fixes. Create a visual barrier for birds to see using window tape for vertical lines, string or ribbon hanging down, decals, or window film. Put these on the outside of the window, spaced 2 inches or 5 centimeters apart or less. You can also make window strikes less deadly. Keep bird feeders and baths close to windows. One point five feet or a half-metre away or closer. You can also u screens on the outside of windows. To learn more visit FLAP dot org. Thank you, bird hero.

While I was waiting for the bus this morning, the cars going by kept running over a flat, pink piece of metal out on the road. It didn't seem like something that would harm the tires but it was clattering loudly, so when the light was red I went out to move it. Now I have questions.

From @stewartprest.ca and @thetyee.ca Read the full article below. (support academic institutions; support independent journalism)
Screenshot of an article on the website of the publication The Tyee. Subheading: Stopping President Roomba

The world has spent years trying to figure out Trump’s motives. Is a given threat serious? Is it a cunning initial bargaining position? Would he really follow through with some given threat?

The reality is much simpler. The president of the United States is like a Roomba. His actions are not strategic. They’re often not even particularly tactical. He simply pushes in a direction, consuming what he can. When he runs into opposition he turns and starts devouring in another direction. Sooner or later, though, he always circles back, and the cycle repeats.

To anyone asking “Would he really...” the answer is always “Yes, unless others stop him.”

For fun we just had a look at the big 2026 horoscope published by the CBC and this bit in the intro struck me as, shall we say, noteworthy: (from www.cbc.ca/life/culture... )
Screenshot of text reads: Amazing transformations to the way we think are set to take place in 2026--and they could permanently alter our conception of what's possible for our futures. The first of these transits will occur on January 26, when imagination- and illusion-ruling Neptune enters brave Aries. The planet of dreams moves slowly through our skies, which means his movements are often felt on a societal level. The last time it moved through Aries was from 1861 to 1875, coinciding with the American Civil War and the abolitionist and spiritual movements. This upcoming journey will last around 13 years, helping reawaken us to our highest ideals and express them with conviction. We may also witness the dawn of intriguing social and spiritual movements. Just be careful of who or what you invest your energy in, as it's often easier to be taken in by deceptive ideologies under this unapologetic influence.

The game has a few ways to do it - get dirty energy out of the grid; restore forests and oceans; directly reduce emissions from animal agriculture, cars, and factories - it's all good, but you have to get it started, FAST. Because once the temperature starts to climb, things spiral quickly. 3/4
Screenshot of a game shows a thermometer with temperature bars marked from 1.2 degrees up to 2 degrees. only the very lowest bar has been filled in. At the top of the screen it says End of Game - Drawdown Reached. Plus 1.3 degrees Celsius since 1900.

The trick, I've found, is to spend the first round aggressively reducing emissions. Build up the resilience of your local communities? Sure, great. Set yourself up for extra resources in the future? Also handy. But if you don't *prioritize* lowering emissions you are, most likely, cooked. 2/4

Gotta love when the postcard you've been using as a bookmark is suddenly illustrating the text. Page from Emma Marris' 2021 book Wild Souls, and @whalesanctuary.bsky.social postcard picked up at the most recent @humanecanada.ca conference.
A paragraph in a book reads "If the Whale Sanctuary Project has its way, SeaWorld's orcas -- and the 3,000 other whales and dolphins in captivity around the world -- won't live out the rest of their lives in tanks. In 2020, the nonprofit selected a site in Port Hilford, Nova Scotia, where they plan to net off a bay or cove in the ocean for cetaceans that can't live independently in the wild." A postcard being held against the page features two black and white photos -- a captive orca rising out of the water with a trainer balanced on their closed mouth and a beluga in a tank -- contrasted against a colour photo of a bright blue sky overthe deep blue water of a bay with trees on the far shore. Text reads From Tanks to Tides. Imagine a world in which all whales and dolphins are treated with respect and are no longer confined to concrete tanks in entertainment parks and aquariums.
