Great thing about writing local-first apps is that you're not reliant on an internet connection for testing. Big test session planned for the trip... Between snoozes.

Good news! The did:plc directory (the registry every atproto identity resolves through) now has an independent Swiss association as steward with no owners and a board of cryptographers and governance people. That removes a strong objection to provenance built on DIDs. blog.plcred.org/3mwlphq42d227

BTW the local-first approach @teonbrooks.com talks about here... of doing as much as possible in the browser is exactly what we're doing with Hyperaudio Lite Editor. Transcription, media manipulation and encoding all done in the browser – tremendously helpful for both accessibility and scalability.

Looking forward to taking this further with next year's conference. Imagine being able to post short clips on bsky (et al), from the transcript of the website, with a link back to the source. We're planning on creating captions/transcripts for various languages. Accessibility built in! cc @bmann.ca

Looking for feedback. You can find the latest version here: github.com/hyperaudio/h... @teonbrooks.com's talk can be found here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=so1Y... (Unfortunately some talks slipped through the net and did not all end up here 2026.atmosphereconf.org/talks – this was one of them).

Above I included the transcript text using the video alt-text, but could have just as easily uploaded a .webvtt file rather than burning in the captions – that would look like the version here. We could have karaoke style captions, but that type of webvtt file is not yet supported by all browsers.

Latest Hyperaudio Editor has experimental support for portrait video. Done by selecting a section of transcript, light editing to remove a few bits and skip any significant gaps between words. Exported the right-hand part of the landscape video, sped up 1.13x, captions burned-in. All in the browser.

Well this is fun! New in Hyperaudio Lite Editor – publish a transcript to your own ATProto PDS as ionosphere/Layers records, unpublish it, read it back – and view a published talk on a static page, no server, no sign-in. hyperaudio.github.io/hyperaudio-l... Try it here: github.com/hyperaudio/h...

Chunk-aligned makes sense to me – it would help with the record-size problem too, since each chunk's transcript stays small. Interesting point about labelers, I hadn't considered that. Records can be labelled, iframes and blobs can't!

Also this connects to something @psingletary.com raised publishing transcripts to a standard.site schema so any aware renderer can consume them. A transcript block would contain timing data, so it could be quoted or clips linked to. Discussion here: discourse.atmosphere.community/t/offer-to-h...
standard.site
Standard.site - One schema. Every platform.
Standard.site provides shared lexicons for long-form publishing on AT Protocol. Making content easier to discover, index, and move across the ATmosphere.

@leaflet.pub Quick question – I've got interactive transcripts resolving as a player in iframely. Pasted into Leaflet it renders as a link card. Is rich embed support limited to an allowlist of providers? I know audio blocks were on your "what's next" list. Thanks debug.iframely.com?uri=https%3A...

Great band! Loved their early stuff, but newer songs still hold up. BBC Radio 6 played a fantastic selection of their songs the other day. Truly impressive. Was fortunate to see them live at Primavera Sound a couple of years ago – amazing live! Only thing I'm not sure about is the recent rebranding.

The example I'm using is the Hyperaudio Lite Editor. It transcribes audio/video entirely in the browser – no build step, no backend, no internet once installed and models are downloaded, nothing leaves your machine. Accessible in ways that don't necessarily fall under the W3C definition.

You can edit up to a point, by striking out words and/or removing gaps between them. What else would you find useful? The ability to add words perhaps, which are then spoken with a synthetic voice?

Sounds like a band I could get behind.
The paragraph covers I'm So Hollow, an early-80s Sheffield band admired by peers across the local scene. They self-released a single ("Dreams to Fill a Vacuum"), recorded a Peel Session, and put out their only album, Emotion/Sound/Motion, in 1981. Despite a five-star review and major-label interest, they'd already broken up before it was released. Two members are quoted being cheerfully unbothered about it — one dismissing the idea of building a life around making it in a band, the other saying she'd got what she wanted and moved on. The album is described as a cult Sheffield post-punk classic.

From the book Groovy, Laidback & Nasty - A History of independent Music in Sheffield.

Thanks also to @blaine.bsky.social for the ionosphere side – the hard part, the schema and pipeline that make proper atproto integration possible. The round-trip writer, so corrected transcripts flow back into it, is next on my list.

Agreed – and the funding question is important for archives especially. I suspect it ends up as institutions and communities funding selective mirroring of what they care about, rather than anyone mirroring everything.
010
Mark Boas @maboa.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
And +1 to the blob-backup question above – for archival use, durability is key. Blobs only survive via deliberate mirroring, which gets costlier as defaults rise. (The multi-blob split is interesting from our side too – chunked, addressable media suits time-based referencing.)
010
Mark Boas @maboa.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
Thoughts from an archives perspective – we've been getting conference talks + word-aligned transcripts onto atproto, and 300M makes clips and oral-history excerpts viable natively. Full talks still need proper video infra (Streamplace in our case).

Just back from a 10 day tour of Sardinia in a campervan. Warmer than I would have liked, but an amazing island if you're into beaches and snorkelling. Bonus being that you feel the heat less when you're in the sea lazily paddling after fish.
