Markus Schütz @m-schuetz.bsky.social · 26/04/2026Yes, can do 2x64 bit atomicAdd instead of 4 x 32 bit. 000
Markus Schütz @m-schuetz.bsky.social · 26/04/2026Is atomicAdd also on the horizon? Add is great for point-based rendering which doesn't have mip mapping, but where we can accumulate color values to compute the average color of overlapping points. 100
Markus Schütz @m-schuetz.bsky.social · 25/04/2026On the bright side, 64 bit atomics are around the corner in WebGPU precisely to enable software rasterization: github.com/gpuweb/gpuwe... (although it's apparently going to be with a clunky vec2 syntax to emulate 64 bit values) 250
Markus Schütz @m-schuetz.bsky.social · 25/04/2026There is one potential issue though: It's not thread safe in that if two threads working on different triangles do that for the same pixel and have the same depth, one might store the first 12 bit, the other the second 12 bit. Probably mostly fine for storing colors, but not if you store indices. 150
Markus Schütz @m-schuetz.bsky.social · 25/04/2026The latter - load all upfront and have lots of VRAM. For Zorah, we are compressing the data during loading from 38GB to 21GB to fit it in VRAM. With a PCIe 5.0 SSD, those 38GB can be prepped and loaded to GPU within 6 seconds. 130
