The way indie music is seen as 'cool' and indie films are seen as 'embracing the craft without selling out' while indie books are seen as 'didn't get trad published' gives me feelings. Really crunchy feelings. The snobbery makes zero sense and instantly tells me someone isn't worth listening to.

Exactly. If I only wrote about what I already knew, that would be super limiting. Also, how would anyone ever write speculative fiction or fantasy? Better advice is to be a life-long learner, and use your imagination to fill in the rest.

I use y'all because a) I never liked the ambiguity of English having the same "you" for both singular and plural, b) it's more widely recognized than my hometown "yinz", and c) I lived in the south for several years and it's a fun reminder of those times.

Do not normalize children dying from measles. Measles was previously eliminated in the US, thanks to vaccines. When children die from measles, it means that adults have catastrophically failed to protect them because they have rejected basic science.

I am all for identifying AI-generated text, but this raises concerns. Can you easily break the watermark by rewording sentences? If the magic words *already make sense in context*, surely it's possible for humans to pick those same words unintentionally. What's the false-positive rate at scale?

I mostly write in Scrivener on my laptop, but the notebook is handy when I'm away from home, or when my writing support kitty wants to help. Sometimes it's nice to write without all the other apps distracting you. Then I just have to decipher my jumbled shorthand. 😂 #writingcommunity #booksky

I love libraries! I was a library kid growing up. I worked in the library in college. Both Blackout Trail and AMFF are available in Hoopla and Libby/Overdrive, but each library curates its own collection. If you don't see them in your local system, they may have a request form. #booksky

This is provably false. Diagnosis is happening across all age groups, particularly among parents who are only getting diagnosed after their children are. The previous counts were ALWAYS WRONG.

Why are more people being diagnosed autistic? Maybe we're just getting better at finding them? Broadening "autism spectrum disorder" to include five different conditions expands who is counted as autistic. Better diagnostic criteria and inclusivity mean fewer people fall through the cracks. More awareness and early screening mean we're better at recognizing autistic traits. And many adults are just now discovering they're autistic - meaning the past rates have always been wrong. We're still learning how much each factor influences diagnostic rates, but it's NO SURPRISE they're increasing. One thing we know for sure: Vaccines do not cause autism.

People still complain about “lockdowns” but we had none in the US. We had stay-at-home orders, where although businesses were closed, you could still go outside whenever you wanted. Other countries had far stricter rules, and yet have been much more accepting of them as they saved many more lives.

Maybe less likely, but depends on your outlook. I'm a paramedic & I love fire/ems shows. Yes, they're often ridiculous, but it's fun if you don't take them too seriously. I know doctors who love medical dramas, historians who love period movies, etc. Enjoying & critiquing aren't exclusive.

Love it when the haters sell your book for you! One of my favorite negative reviews of Blackout Trail was "more family PG rated than apocalypse". I would put it closer to PG13 myself, but still - grimdark, it is definitely not.
