Celebrating Navi Pillay's Nobel Peace Prize today by remembering two American Peace Prize laureates: Jane Addams and Emily Greene Balch. Their organization, the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, continues their work for a feminist peace. #philsky #womenshistory @wilpf.bsky.social

Another Concord Public Library sighting--Louisa May Alcott! Just finished this fascinating book on The Emerson Circle by Bruce Nichols. Learned a ton about LMA, including how much she wrote beyond Little Women. Duly noted . . .

Had a glorious day visiting Concord's transcendentalist sites last week. Highlights: the new Margaret #Fuller statue and swimming in a windswept Walden Pond, complete with whitecaps! #philsky #womeninphilosophy #womenshistory #transcendentalism

Great news in history of women in philosophy--new book by Alison Stone on Julia Wedgwood, whose "law of imperfect antithesis" is a fascinating alternative to mainstream ethical theory. Jane Addams birthday week final post, this time in response to the accusation that she advocated "peace at any price": "What we desire is peace at once, and a peace founded on justice and law." Here she is (3rd from left) en route to war-torn Europe in 1915, ready to argue for peace. #philsky

Jane Addams birthday week post 4! A positive vision of peace: “I believe that peace is not merely an absence of war but the nurture of human life, and that in time this nurture would do away with war as a natural process.” Nurture doing away with nature ...food for thought. #philsky #womenshistory

To me, Addams' philosophy of education is both inspiring and intimidating. A vision to strive for! Sending energy and all good wishes to all teachers this year. #womeninphilosophy #philsky #pragmatism #womenshistory #womenrethinkingtheworld

Jane Addams birthday week #3: a quote for the start of the school year: "We have not yet had full confidence in the wondrous things these children are learning to do. We have not yet learned to teach them as they should be taught, because we do not yet sufficiently reverence their possibilities." 👇

Thrilled and grateful to be settling in as a 2026-27 fellow at Harvard's Transcendentalism Initiative. Looking forward to getting to know my very impressive fellow fellows . . . and to thinking through transcendentalism's promise and perils together this year. cswr.hds.harvard.edu/2026-27-tran...

Jane Addams birthday week post 2: today I read that her school principal, Miss Sill, subscribed to the opinion that women should not speak in public. Addams went on to be a world-famous speaker for suffrage, pacifism, worker's rights, and immigrant rights. I hope her disobedience brought her joy!

Thanks to the great team at GASTROPOD for this wonderful conversation in which I got to do one of the things I love most--talk about Lydia Maria Child's *agricultural activism.* In a nutshell: how to fight slavery by growing beets! How I HATED beets as a child. But now . . .

Love that Lidian is getting more attention, also in Fuller’s Bright Circle. As a fellow Lydia, I still resent Emerson’s renaming her! There were apparently a lot of us around then, but still.

Terrell often had to remind white pacifists that it took a war to end her enslavement. She also challenged them to explain why they agonized about WWI deaths in Europe but ignored lynching and racial violence in the US. Taking these thoughts to heart as we end Black Women's History Month. #BWHM

Researching Black women pacifists, I found this powerful Mary Church Terrell quote. She identifies as a pacifist, then says: "But all pacifists are not cut according to the same pattern...I do not advocate peace at any price. The only kind of peace I like is one that is a just & honorable one."👇

I'm continuing to learn about Black women's internationalism . . . #OTD in 1945, Mary McLeod Bethune was the only woman of color at the UN founding conference, which she hoped would allow Black Americans become "integrated into the structure of the peace and freedom of all people everywhere.”👇
