I wonder if there is a confounding effect, demonstrated over time now, where this 10% partially describes how many students in that culture feel safe admitting to cheating.

“Only 10% […] use it to generate their whole assignment” “But that number (students who admit to cheating) hasn’t really changed over the years, it’s just how they cheat” overcast.fm/+AAQLdu77JZA... Does anyone have baseline research on how students perceive the risk of honesty?

Rewind: How AI is fueling an existential crisis in education — Decoder with Nilay Patel
Hey, everyone, Nilay here. We’re off today, while the team and I are cooking on a lot of really great stuff in the coming weeks. We’ll be back with an all-new interview on Monday. In the meantime, we ...

For everyone saying they love this but it’s bad for e.g. performance reviews: I would have occasionally hired a “tech debt” freelance hacker for my legacy products if I’d known any (or thought of it). Maybe it’s something to offer.

Independent and brave journalism, across the world and in any culture, is one of our strongest defenses against illiberalism. Opinion mills feed fascism and anarchy. Please, subscribe to outlets and journalists that truly do the job and report the facts.

It’s ok to be occasionally reminded of the cost of inaction, so that we remember how important it is to use our time and abilities to reinforce good things around us. But if it starts to drag you down, it’s also ok to give yourself a break.

Ah sorry, I think you may be focusing on the face of the example I gave, instead of the analogy I intended to make between my convincing but shallow reproduction of a capability, and the general possibility of similar experience with current generative language models.

It feels like when I was taught to sing French and Italian solos in high school. I won competitive awards because I reproduced the sounds convincingly well, consistently, but I didn’t learn either language and so never actually knew what I was singing.

I guess I’ve had the impression that they produce this text gradually, a token at a time, because generating the idea and then self-talk confirmation or critique is rewarded. But if the model doesn’t retain the new connection or reinforce, it’s again like, not actually introspecting.

But LRMs don’t create new connections, surface and restructure representation weights or spontaneously resolve misunderstandings. The impression that might appear through selecting the best probabilistic self-talk “chain of thought” from perhaps a tree of sub-chains evaporates with the session.

My not great understanding is that Chatter’s approach hasn’t been validated, and didn’t he redefine thinking to be so narrow as to exclude unconscious cognition like procedural thoughts?

I wonder if it’s possible to intentionally trigger a (genuine?) aha moment. I think that I think of them as an emergent experience, and the critical mass of potential nodes between which a new connection might manifest doesn’t feel deterministic. But maybe that’s not the right framing?

I first heard about the events from breaking news on AP’s own app, and can say I appreciated the care the AP journalists took to be specific but not speculative.

Seven years after the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, the world is being asked to forget what happens when governments decide reporters are disposable—and to turn away from what that precedent means for all of us.

If invading other countries is required to sustain an industry, then it’s the wrong industry to be championing.

Cancelling cost-saving renewable-source generation projects and skill building only makes this worse. The US needs to move on from expensive, logistically complicated fossil fuel sources and lead innovation in the next 100+ years of power—renewables. Failing this only ensures energy insecurity.

The UK had a choice between jumpstarting energy independence or waiting for grid renovation, and chose the route that now creates impetus to make the upgrades. We all know how slowly boring infra maintenance projects are funded and followed-through. Their progress is a great lesson to learn from.

I have heard of them actually. My old knowledge was that biochar inputs were best when they had a lot of dense or woody fibers, like crop stalks and the like. Also interesting for waste treatment plants is growing things like duckweed as a way to process the waste.

I was working on a startup around biochar in 2007, and at the time there was not really a market for it or industrial smoldering ovens to produce it. Awareness of it was really low and market-making was required. It feels like the time could really be right for someone to try.

Do similar studies that look at the effect of incentivizing building utility-level solar find a beneficial cost response for customers, I wonder?

The only great solution to the issues trying to be addressed requires good-faith, nuanced, sustained and profit diluting effort from every entity associated. Hasn’t happened in 20 years despite having the playbook. Until then the less-sophisticated-but-available tools will start being deployed 😬

A lot of great evidence out there for German regulators to use when arguing for modern and adaptive power infrastructure. Flexible tariffs and distributed local storage could be a boon for smoothing out delivery and improving use of renewables. I hope we can follow the UK and others’ examples ❤️

I wonder how this type of world view would hold up if communities decided to recognize economic crimes by the violence they cause against society. It feels telling that such hard-line ideas always focus on the “not me” slice of law & order.

Grid bottlenecks aren’t a failure of the energy transition — they’re proof it’s working. Renewables got cheap fast, and now the grid has to catch up. Time to build the wires for the clean energy system we already have.
