Rewind: How AI is fueling an existential crisis in education — Decoder with Nilay Patel
Hey, everyone, Nilay here. We’re off today, while the team and I are cooking on a lot of really great stuff in the coming weeks. We’ll be back with an all-new interview on Monday. In the meantime, we ...

Independent and brave journalism, across the world and in any culture, is one of our strongest defenses against illiberalism. Opinion mills feed fascism and anarchy. Please, subscribe to outlets and journalists that truly do the job and report the facts.

I first heard about the events from breaking news on AP’s own app, and can say I appreciated the care the AP journalists took to be specific but not speculative.

Seven years after the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, the world is being asked to forget what happens when governments decide reporters are disposable—and to turn away from what that precedent means for all of us.

A lot of great evidence out there for German regulators to use when arguing for modern and adaptive power infrastructure. Flexible tariffs and distributed local storage could be a boon for smoothing out delivery and improving use of renewables. I hope we can follow the UK and others’ examples ❤️

Grid bottlenecks aren’t a failure of the energy transition — they’re proof it’s working. Renewables got cheap fast, and now the grid has to catch up. Time to build the wires for the clean energy system we already have.

Thanksgiving in America by Ron Cobb, 1967
Political cartoon by artist Ron Cobb, created in 1967. It offers a critical perspective on the American Thanksgiving holiday by contrasting a contemporary family dinner with the historical reality of Native American genocide.

The top panel depicts a typical American family enjoying a Thanksgiving feast.

The bottom panel, located directly beneath the floorboards, reveals a mass of skeletons and skulls, including some adorned with traditional Native American headpieces.

The cartoon highlights the myth versus the reality of the holiday's origins, which often obscures the violent history and displacement of Indigenous peoples.

Companies invest where they generate revenue. If the industry is mature and has low regulation, competitors are likely to be “pricing and packaging” focused. Sales-led companies generally prioritize marketing budgets over product—and security is usually low on the list to begin with.

I don’t feel like we’re ready for dynamic flocks of independent agentic neural networks with online learning. Personal devices will carry AI agents with OS-level access in the next few years. How do we respond when any entity could spontaneously become a malicious god-tier hacker? #aisafety

Large language models are powerful, but still not trustworthy enough to outsource critical tasks to them. What happens if it invents false facts? If a charge is challenged, can the officer (or defendant) blame the AI? 1/

The "full stack" debate isn't about the role, it's about hiring at the wrong altitude. A #fullstack engineer isn't your mythical everything expert. They're the pragmatic problem-solvers who can work effectively across your team's stack. Think less "unicorn" and more "Swiss Army knife." 🔧

The narrative around AI's impact on the software engineering workforce needs a reality check. There’s a lot of chatter about “we no longer need junior devs” because of AI, but new tech it’s a common theme to use as a shareholder smoke screen to justify using a RIF to balance thin growth numbers.
