Which is weird, because the original purpose of insurance was to prevent you from unexpectedly needing to pay lots of money

I'd be curious to know what percentage of these congestion pricing payments are made by Manhattan car owners. (As compared to people who live elsewhere.)

Childhood is the time when you believe that as an adult, you will have some small control of your own life and destiny. Adulthood is the realization that only the very wealthy get to have that.

A failure to learn would be the next Dem president, likely next Dem trifecta, coming in and acting like yay, Trump's gone, we can all go back to normal policymaking agendas now, while surrounded by the still-smoldering ruin of the constitutional system. There must be a new constitutional settlement.

As an American living abroad, people often ask me what I miss from back home. "General Tso's chicken" is my standard response.

April Fool's Day was fun back when it was unusual for crazy things to happen in the news every day. If I encounter an April Fool's joke today, I will probably think it's a real thing that happened, but will ignore it, because that's what I do with crazy news stories about things I can't change.

"and Only Had 1 Drop", as if I expected more drops from someone joggling a sub 5 minute mile. Every drop costs time, so in a way, jogging a sub 5 mile with a drop is more impressive than without, because it means he could have been faster.

Last night I dreamed I was in the elevator at work, and the doors opened at the second floor. Crazy, right? In my experience, the elevator commonly stops set the first, third, and fourth floors. I’ve never seen it stop at the second floor. I’ve never met anyone who works on the second floor.

Medicare for All would save $450B a year. Every dollar spent on food stamps generates $1.50-$1.80 in economic activity. Each dollar going to low-wage workers adds $1.20 to the economy overall. It’s not about what this country can or can’t afford. It’s about priorities.

Yeah, but if a super-rich man wanted to spend money protecting citizens, he would do it in a bat-shit crazy way that might do as much harm as good, rather than donating to established charitable organizations that will genuinely help people.

My generic answer on whether discount policies should be different for rich kids: no. This tends to decrease paperwork (only need to check the child’s age, and not their parents’ income), and ensures the option is available to all kids, whether their parents choose to do the paperwork or not.

The Founding Fathers worked to establish a country that would be free of oppression and tyranny. The most patriotic thing we can do this Independence Day is to continue the fight that they started, and make the United States a place that is great for all of its residents and allies.

A tricky thing about modern society is that no one has any idea when they don’t die. Like, the number of lives saved by controlling air pollution in America is probably over 200,000 per year, but the number of people who think their life was saved by controlling air pollution is zero.

Why use tariffs to balance the trade deficit? There's a much simpler solution: switch to a 100% barter economy. If you buy an iphone, you have a $900 trade deficit. But if you trade the 1500 pounds of potatoes you grew in your garden for an iphone, your trade deficit is balanced.

A cherubic-looking calico cat sits in a box (which is labeled "129" but that part is not important; just faithfully recording what's in the photo) on a wooden floor. Part of a purple and black rug is visible.

They're called "skeets"?! Really? As far as I'm concerned, the term "tweet" entered the public domain when Elon decided the company formerly known as Twitter should be called "X". I'm going to continue calling these sort of posts "tweets", regardless of the platform being used.

After exporting all of my tweets, twitter sent me an e-mail telling me they are ready to download. The e-mail contains a link. After clicking the link, I am asked to verify my identity via a code sent by e-mail. It seems like those steps could have been consolidated.

All of my posts before this one were exported from my twitter account. If any of them don't make sense anymore, that must be because the timestamp has been lost. Either that, or they never made sense, which is probably more likely.

Words like sand, water, and sheep don't have plural forms because they are considered uncountable. Sheep are an interesting case because they seem like they should be countable, but they have a defense mechanism of making anyone who tries to count them fall asleep.
