STANFILL, C.J., concurring.

I agree with the Opinion of the Court. I write separately, however, to express my increasing alarm at the frequency with which the State of Maine s violating its simplest discovery obligations. See, e.g., State v. Johnson 2026 ME 87. --- A.3d --: State v. Pelletier, 2023 ME 74, 306 A.3d 614; State v Page, 2023 ME 73, 306 A.3d 142; State v. Reed-Hansen, 2019 ME 58, 207 A.3d 191.

 I am particularly concerned that on appeal the State---until pressed by this Court at oral argument and contrary to long-standing rules and precedent- asserted that it did not violate its discovery obligations because the material was in possession of law enforcement and not the District Attorney's office. See, e.g., State v. Robbins, 1997 ME 21, T 7, 689 A.2d 603; Strickler v. Greene, 527 U.S. 263, 280-82, 282 n.21 (1999); State v. Eldridge, 412 A.2d 62, 67 (Me. 1980).

I understand that many District Attorney's offices are understaffed. I also know that the vast majority of Maine's prosecutors are acting in good faith. Nonetheless, "when, as here and all too often, new information is obtained on the eve of trial," defendants are increasingly at risk of being unfairly surprised and prejudiced. State v. Dennis, 2024 ME 54, T 35, 320 A.3d 396 Stanfill, C.J., concurring) (footnote omitted). The State must do better

Seriously.... How could you possibly mediate the issues here when one party is this deep in the fucking wilderness? This woman is in a cult and think she's righteous for turning her daughter against "The enemy." You can't fix that level of crazy.
Screenshot from the previously linked opinion.

Bradeen reached out to Bickford to express his concerns about the child's anxiety and about Bickford's decision to engage the child in religious activities without notifying or conferring with him. Bickford's response was that she lives under God's law, not the state's law. Bickford does not believe the child is, or should be, experiencing any anxiety, because she and the child "just pray" and "give it to God."Screenshot from previously linked opinion:

After Bradeen expressed his concerns, Bickford made other unilateral decisions about the child's participation in church activities, and she took steps to hide the scope of the child's involvement from Bradeen. For example, Bradeen learned that the child was scheduled to be baptized only when he was informed by a third party. Bradeen then called Bickford to ask about the baptism, and she placed him on speakerphone in front of the child On another occasion, Bickford took the child out of school for a day, explaining to Bradeen that they were visiting the state capitol. Although this was partially true, she did not tell Bradeen that they were going to the state capitol to participate in a political rally with other church members.

Most recently, Bickford allowed the child to stay overnight at someone else's home as part of a church-sponsored retreat for teenagers; the child, who was eleven vears old at the time, was not allowed to have her cell phone. Bickford did not tell Bradeen about the retreat, and he learned about it only through the church's Facebook page. Whenever Bradeen expressed a concern to Bickford about one of these events, she "double[d] down" by sending the child to Bradeen's house with new clothing and accessories bearing religious images and messagesScreenshot from previously linked opinion:

On the evening of August 28, 2024, following the first day of the hearing on the motions to modify, Bickford took the child to a service at the church. Bickford knew in advance that Carey intended to discuss this litigation as part of the service, and she encouraged him to do so. At the opening of the service, Carey offered a six-and-a-half-minute-long prayer focused exclusively on this case. *3

 In the prayer, Carey:

• introduced these proceedings as a "custody battle,'" with Bradeen on one "side" and Bickford on the other;

• referenced the parties and the child by name almost thirty times;

• described Bradeen as in need of salvation;
noted that the church had "been praying for [Bradeen] and his salvation for a long time";

*3:

Bradeen viewed a recording of the prayer on the church's Facebook page and created recording of it; the recording was admitted in evidence at the hearing on November 27.Continuation of the previously linked screenshot:

• stated that "[Bradeen's] side" had retained an expert witness for purpose of "find[ing] any dirt they can on Calvary Chapel, on [another pastor] and on myself, and on [the child's] faith and [Bickford's] faith"

• described these proceedings as not "really an attack on [Bickford], [the child], or Calvary Chapel,'' but as "really an attack on God's Word";

• asserted that the outcome of this case would depend on no more thar "who appointed [the] judge"' and "where this judge stands with God and His Word";

• described this case as an example of "the enemy seek[ing] to ... crush and quench and strangle the church"

• stated that "[i]t's hard to imagine, though, when you're eleven years and vou're dealing with the level of persecution that [the child] is dealing with";

and

• prayed, regarding the outcome of this case, that God "bring to nothing the plans and the snares and the tricks of the enemy."

Bickford did not attempt to remove the child from the service at any point during the prayer, and she later affirmed her belief that it was "appropriate"
for the child to sit through the service.

The "tenor and content" of this prayer were
not atypical for Carey, who consistently characterizes "those who challenge the
church's beliefs--including [Bradeen]--as the 'enemy."

This is probably the single most horrifying t-shirt I've ever seen. Found in a Marden's (A popular Maine discount shop).
A brown t-shirt with a screen printed drawing of what is likely supposed to be a beaver. The body is squashed and the drawing's perspective is all over the place.

This is something you'd see scribbled in the margins of a child's homework as they cope with their parent's sudden divorce.

Did you know his R. Kelly moniker is now Google AI official?
Screenshot from a Google AI response:

Yes, the prominent industry fiqure who has been colloquially dubbed "The R. Kelly of Anime" by online communities following a major sexual harassmeni scandal is prominent voice actor Vic Mignogna.

The Context Behind the Label

• The Allegations: In early 2019, Mignogna faced widespread accusations of unwanted sexua advances, inappropriate physical contact, and predatory behavior toward female fans (including ninors at conventions) and co-workers.

The Fallout: Following the investigation into these allegations, major anime distributors like Funimation and production companies like Rooster Teeth severed all ties and recast him

• The Legal Battle: Mignogna filed a high-profile nulti-million dollar defamation lawsuit against his accusers and former employers. He lost the nitial lawsuit and subsequent appeals, resulting n him being ordered to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in his defendants' legal fees

During the height of the public legal battles and community discussions on platforms like Twitter anc Reddit, critics and commentators began using the "R Kellv of Anime" moniker due to the nature of the allegations involving fans, the legal pushback, and the ultimate collapse of his mainstream voice-actinc
career. Reddit -r/roosterteeth

For any bird people out there, it was a song sparrow. The AI confused these two birds with about 60% confidence (according to its secret internal metrics).
A song sparrow, a small bird with brown, white, and black feathers. Incredibly common for Maine this time of year. An Atlantic Yellow-nosed albatross, a large bird with a striking white chest and head and some brown/black feathers on its back.

"States that retain capital punishment must devote inordinate amount of time and resources--taxpayer dollars-to defending a practice that does not deter or make anybody safer. It's so deeply pointless. Every peer nation has moved on from this archaic practice for good reason. It helps no one."

And

"One reason I hate death penalty cases is that capital punishment is incredibly stupid and irrational. cruel, expensive, and serves no deterrent effect. It's rarely imposed, except against a tiny minority of unlucky defendants-and in those cases, racism almost always plays a role. Just end it"Post from ufocatherfan responding to Stern's post:

Seattle: Famously land locked.
A Google Maps screenshot of Seattle showing it bordered by Lake Washington to the East and Elliot Bay to the west.
