Among the grave goods in the grave of the Mycenaean Griffin Warrior near the Palace of Nestor in Pylos were four gold signet rings, more than any other tomb yet discovered. Let's take a look at two of them ... 1/ 🏺 #ancientbluesky 📸 me
The oval bezel on this gold ring shows a powerful bull dashing forward in a flying gallop, its head thrown backward, and tail extended upward. A narrow-waisted man behind the bull is in the process of landing on the ground after his leap. Motion is implied by his arms, which are extended for balance, and by his position over the rear hooves of the bull. Two parallel lines bracket a running spiral motif, which serves as the ground line. The plain band is trapezoidal.

Minoan, 1630-1440 BCE. Gold. From Pylos, Grave of the Griffin Warrior.

Chora Archaeological Museum, Greece (SN24-0018)This large gold ring has a hoop ornamented with two rows of granulation flanking cockleshells outlined by beads of finer granulation. On the oval bezel is a complex religious ritual taking place by the seashore. A group of three figures on the right, one mature woman and two young girls, with hands on hips, appear to be dancing in a rocky landscape in front of a shrine with a palm tree growing on each side. Scarves around the necks of the dancers, flying out like wings, indicate motion. The large central figure, a goddess or a priestess, wears Minoan garb, consisting of an open bodice and flounced skirt. Two women on the left appear to be sing-ing, suggested by one hand raised to the mouth.

The Sprotta hand axe is a #Neanderthal masterpiece. The flint tool was found in northern Saxony in 1996 and dates back to 50,000 to 80,000 years ago. This hand axe demonstrates not only the technical skill but also the aesthetic sense of its maker, as it is noted for its carefully...🧵1/2 📷 me

I live in South Africa. Whilst I don't have an issue with most Afrikaans people (there are the odd racists, but mostly a lovely people these days. It's not 1970.), giving them refugee status is utterly absurd, and based on an entirely false narrative spun by actual racists.

🧵 Here is Earth's rotation realized in an unusual way: using a camera scanning the landscape of Tivoli, Namibia, Bartosz Wojczyński focused on the sky. He created a timelapse spanning 24 h that has a focal point in the sky rather than on the ground. ➡️ apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap20070... 🔭 🧪 #galactic

Too good not to share: a wooden floor of a #Neolithic house. Unearthed in Alleshausen-Grundwiesen, a wetland settlement at the western rim of the Federsee marshlands, 3020-2700 BC. 📷H. Schlichterle/Landesamt für Denkmalpflege Baden Württemberg 🏺 #archaeology
A lawn, squares of which have been dug out until a depth of 30 cm. There are bicolor length indicators (red and white) and, on the flat uneathed bottom: a wooden floor : planks on joists. The wood is black and corroded.
