Snippet from the book I finished this morning, Weyward by Emilia Hart. I really enjoyed this and it’s perfect for spooky season without being scary.

Witch. The word slithers from the mouth like a serpent, drips from the tongue as thick and black as tar. We never thought of ourselves as witches, my mother and I. For this was a word invented by men, a word that brings power to those who speak it, not those it describes. A word that builds gallows and pyres, turns breathing women into corpses.
No. It was not a word we ever used.
I did not know, for a long time, what my mother thought of our gifts. But I knew what was expected of me, from a young child. She named me Altha, after all. Not Alice, meaning noble woman, nor Agnes, lamb of God. Altha. Healer.
She taught me how to heal. And she
taught me other things, too.
"They say that the first woman was born of man, Altha," she said to me once when I was a child, for this was what we had heard the rector say in church that Sunday. "That she came from his rib. But you must remember, my girl, that this is a lie."

The township is replacing a curb in front of my house and this is how I learned that I don’t know how curbs work because I was not expecting them to have to dig a moat

Reading a physical book today so it’s not as clean as most of my Libby screenshots, but Alison Cochrun puts into words exactly how I feel about airports too. And now I want to go on a trip.

There's nothing quite like the rhythm of an international airport. The harmony of a dozen different languages, the frantic tempo of shoes and luggage wheels against the lacquered floors as people hurry to catch their flights; the melody of suits shouting at invisible people in their ears as college students have hushed conversations over their travel guides. I've always loved the possibility of it all, the potential. The hustle and the energy. Airports are like purgatory. You’re nowhere and everywhere, suspended in a temporal no-man's-land until you step onto your next flight.

I’ve been reading this beautiful novel, Swimming in the Dark by Tomasz Jedrowski, and I wanted to share a bit more of it

I thought of the photographer and his courage, imagining how the photo had made it out of the country: a roll of film smuggled into West Germany, in a secret compartment or an emptied tube of toothpaste. Anonymous figures trapped on the wrong side of history, compressed and rolled up inside a stranger's pocket. No matter what happens in the world, however brutal or dystopian a thing, not all is lost if there are people out there risking themselves to document it.
Little sparks cause fires too.

I'd been seeing this one solo deer walking around the neighborhood a lot the last week or so, usually they kind of keep to themselves on the edge of the neighborhood, but now SHE JUST WALKED BY WITH A TINY BABY
