I'm cataloging my maternal grandfather's papers. He was born to a German Jewish family in Marseilles, and got a doctorate in physics at the University of Basel. He moved to the US in the 1930s to get away from the Nazis, first New York, then (for health reasons) to California.

Read the memoir of a woman who was a teenager in the Bay Area in the 60s and met everyone - Dylan, D.T. Suzuki, etc. The Black Panthers gave a talk at her high school. There was a gorgeous, bucolic photo: they were outdoors, sitting on a hill under a tree, sunlight filtering through the tall grass.
