Finally read the new AfD strategy paper on Europe. It casts 2029 as a “historic window” to reorient the EU’s foundations through Treaty change, with a right-wing majority in the EP and a German government with AfD participation both within reach. Thread on some notable points:

Empfehle aus aktuellem Anlass noch mal diesen Text von @casmudde.bsky.social: „Focusing on the priorities and values of female voters (…) would transform the political debate: we would talk more about combating the climate crisis …“ www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
Focusing on the priorities and values of female voters (such as actions to fight the climate crisis and strengthen the welfare state), rather than pandering to the reactionary politics of the far right, would have two major advantages for progressive politics in general and for leftwing parties in particular. First, it would transform the political debate: we would talk more about combating the climate crisis, for instance, and spend less time demonising immigrants. Second, it gives young women a reason to come out and vote in larger numbers, which is significant, as “young women abstain from voting more than young men do”. The opportunity is there for the taking.

Beyond minors, "addictive design is harming everyone", vdL says and that "we need a wider framework", the Digital Fairness Act. That is to be proposed this Autumn. And that's it for this year. 10/10

She says that they will reverse the burden of proof. Platforms will have to prove that they are safe for minors. Taking up a "safety by design" approach is definitely useful, and would be useful beyond accounts for minors as well. 9/

I think this part is quite strong: vdL says "People perceive the power of big tech as overwhelming and impossible to rollback. I disagree. We do not have to accept addictive features etc." I hope the Commission's enforcement action will match that ambition, it hasn't always in the past. 8/

She mentions strengthening rule of law and fundamental rights conditionality for EU funds further in the next long-term budget. Next is protecting children online, with a Kids Act for social media platforms, to be announced tomorrow. 7/

Luise Quaritsch @luisequaritsch.eurosky.social · 16/09/2026
On a positive note, vdL then adds that threats to our democracies do not only come from outside, an acknowledgement that was sometimes missing in the past. She mentions the rise anti-democratic, anti-European forces and cites Hungary as an example that that rise is not inevitable. 6/

Luise Quaritsch @luisequaritsch.eurosky.social · 16/09/2026
She mentions the Centre for Democratic Resilience, announced last year, that has already taken up its work and "is already delivering with all the Member States". I don't think we have seen any evidence of delivery so far though, at least not publicly, just a few meetings that took place. 5/

This view underestimates the agency people have in making their political choices. Disinformation is often specifically sought out by people because it aligns with the opinions they already have. Disinformation absolutely needs to be addressed - but I doubt that that would fix everything. 4/

Luise Quaritsch @luisequaritsch.eurosky.social · 16/09/2026
Also, this framing suggests that people are somehow tricked or manipulated into e.g. voting for Trump, Brexit, anti-democratic parties and if we just exposed them to higher quality information, they would change their attitude/ vote differently. 3/
140 4
Luise Quaritsch @luisequaritsch.eurosky.social · 16/09/2026
This framing of disinformation as a central threat to democracy is something the Commission/vdL has done consistently in the past few years. But it likely is a vast exaggeration of the effect disinformation has in reality. 2/

Given that the Centre has already taken up its work, its basic set-up likely won't change but the Commission could still consider some of the recommendations such as clarifying the mandate, setting up a timeline for action and taking steps to avoid duplicating existing structures.

On the Democracy Shield's central proposal for the establishment of a European Centre for Democratic Resilience, the report rightly criticizes the lack of clear mandate and budgetary resources. It also calls for an effective enforcement of the EU's digital acquis, a very important point IMO.

Often overlooked in the EU budget debate: In 2021-27, EU funding through the budget and NGEU amounted to 1.53% of GNI. Even under the Commission proposal - bound to be cut - real spending power would fall to 1.15%. Europe is heading for a sharp drop in EU money for investment and stabilisation.
