My latest story: Russian companies made an estimated £500m windfall from urea fertiliser alone this spring – £5m per day – as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz sent global prices soaring. Almost half was from US imports, which broke records in March and April.

Very excited to have been shortlisted for this award for our reporting in Ghana! We documented new and previously unreported textile dump sites mushrooming beyond urban areas – including in pristine conservation areas that are critical for wildlife and local communities.

Did you know that 'sustainable' aviation fuel (SAF) can be made from inedible beef fat? With court docs and trade data, we've uncovered links between SAF arriving in the UK, and illegal deforestation of a protected Amazon reserve.
A map shows the supply chain of tallow from the Amazon, to a US refinery where it is turned into green aviation fuel, to UK and EU markets

My latest work, with an incredible team of journalists: How 'green' is sustainable jet fuel? We found commercial links between biofuels imported to the UK, and deforestation of an Amazonian reserve that has already lost more than 75% of its rainforest. 🌳🐄✈️ Read more below!

If major traders walk away, this conservation success story collapses. This is not a minor policy change - it is the dismantling of one of the strongest rainforest protections on Earth.

Much of that destruction was driven by soy for global animal feed markets. After NGOs (inc. Greenpeace), the Brazilian government and soy traders agreed to the ASM, Amazon deforestation fell steeply - by 84% between 2004 and 2012. It is one of the clearest success stories in conservation history.

Conservation groups warn this could unravel nearly two decades of progress. Before the moratorium, Amazon deforestation was spiralling: In 2004 alone, 28,000 km² was destroyed: about 1.5× the size of Wales.

So why leave? Because the agribusiness sector has been waging a sustained political and legal assault on the agreement. This now includes: • an investigation by Brazil’s federal competition agency • and a new law in Mato Grosso stripping tax breaks from companies that follow it

Lucy Jordan @lucyjordan.bsky.social · 12/01/2026
Why does this matter? The ASM was established in 2006 after global outrage over runaway Amazon destruction. It bans traders from buying soy grown on land deforested after 2008. It is credited with saving an area of rainforest roughly the size of Ireland.

There are signs JBS is already walking back the pledge. In January, its sustainability chief told Reuters JBS's zero emissions goal was merely an "aspiration," and it cannot control how farms operate. Yet that same executive had restated the pledge before the US Senate Finance Committee in 2023.
