Extraordinary material intensity of this still life of a melon and pears (or quinces), painted in 1772 by Luis Egidio Melendez of Madrid. It's his day today.

20261001 • World Postcard Day #PostcardMatching
A whimsical postcard portraying Anne of Brittany as an elegant blue-eyed Siamese cat, dressed in a jewelled medieval headdress and framed like a Renaissance portrait. In the softly blurred garden behind it, a real Siamese cat sits in an almost uncannily similar upright pose, with the same cream coat, dark face, ears and tail, and striking blue eyes.

An extreme close-up transforms a bright yellow Correos postbox into an almost human profile, with its rounded top, projecting letter slot and small metal details resembling a forehead, nose and mouth. Layers of torn stickers, scraps of posters, graffiti and faded pink markings cover its weathered surface, recording traces of countless passers-by.

Phoenix, a tabby cat, gazes down towards the camera in a dramatic black-and-white portrait taken from a low angle. Its wide, luminous eyes and upright ears give it an alert, quietly commanding expression, while long white whiskers fan out against the darker background.

20260926 • Dualidades
A black-and-white street scene frames two adjoining historic façades in striking contrast: one pale, orderly and carefully restored, the other darkened and heavily weathered, with crumbling plaster and traces of age surrounding its tall windows. At street level, illuminated shopfronts glow beneath both buildings as blurred pedestrians pass through the foreground.

Black Cat Looking Straight Ahead by contemporary Japanese artist Toshiyuki Enoki (born 1961).
Positioned squarely in the center of a heavily textured, antiqued golden ground, a jet-black cat sits in erect, motionless composure, staring directly out at the viewer. Its dense dark coat is rendered with meticulous, micro-fine brushwork, giving tactile softness to the chest and ears while contrasting sharply against the coarse, woven grain of the underlying substrate. Two large, luminous amber eyes—framed by thin golden irises and wide, dilated pupils—glow with unblinking intensity, serving as the sole vibrant point of light within the ink-dark silhouette. At the base, a single tail curls smoothly outward across the muted canvas, while in the lower left corner, a bright vermilion and yellow circular seal bearing the artist's mark anchors the lower register.
Painted by contemporary artist Toshiyuki Enoki (born 1961), this work continues Japan’s long-standing painterly fascination with feline mystery, drawing a direct lineage from Hishida Shunshō’s iconic 1910 Nihonga masterpiece Black Cat (Kuroki Neko) and the whimsical cats of Utagawa Kuniyoshi. Enoki, trained in traditional Nihonga (Japanese-style painting) techniques, silk painting, and lacquer restoration, employs a distinctive technique involving natural mineral pigments (iwanogu), gold leaf, and layered glazes on textured canvas or hemp paper. His unique monozukuri (artisanal mastery) fuses traditional Japanese material culture with surreal, otherworldly sensibilities, transforming a domestic subject into a timeless, talismanic icon that feels both ancient and modern.

Cover illustration for a magazine called “Metro Guide” being distributed thought metro stations in Tokyo from September 2017.
Riding away along a glistening, stone-paved lane (ishidatami), a solitary cyclist moves beneath an arching canopy of autumn maple leaves (momiji) blazing in brilliant shades of crimson, rust, and orange. To the left, traditional timber townhouses (machiya) border the path, their dark wooden facades outfitted with hanging shop curtains (noren) and subtle lanterns. Along the curb, wild pampas grass (susuki) bends gently in the crisp air, while fresh rainwater pooling on the wet flagstones reflects the bright sky and fiery foliage like sheets of stained glass. Created as the cover illustration for the free publication Metro Guide, distributed across Tokyo metro stations starting in September 2017, this piece reimagines the historical genre of meisho-e (pictures of famous views) through a contemporary watercolor lens. Designed to encourage urban commuters to pause and rediscover seasonal beauty within and beyond the capital, the artwork bridges graphic publishing with classical landscape sensibilities.

20260914 • Behind the Turquoise Door
A weathered turquoise double door stands behind a heavy black iron grille in the worn façade of an old building. Peeling paint and exposed textures surround the entrance, while a small lantern glows warmly above, set between the doorway and a matching barred window. Traces of graffiti, cracked plaster and tiny plants growing at pavement level add to the sense of age and abandonment.

Who ordered the basket of disappointed kittens? Postcard from my collection, mailed 1904.
Black and white photo of four kittens spilling out of a basket that seems to be partially full of hay. They’re all short haired, and there is a black haired tuxedo, two tabbies, and what looks like a white and calico. They all look grumpy and disappointed.

20260822 • Blue Walls, Old Stories
A weathered three-storey building painted a soft, faded blue, with cream-coloured trim framing its tall wooden windows and doors. Black wrought-iron balconies repeat rhythmically across the façade, contrasting with the warm tones of the timber and the delicate blue walls. Exposed cables, peeling paint and graffiti at street level reveal the building’s age and everyday urban life, while an ornate traditional street lamp appears at the right edge.

A whimsical poster featuring a fluffy black cat dressed as a tiny dragon, complete with a green dragon headpiece, teeth, and small wings. The dragon cat sits in front of a soft yellow circle on a warm beige textured background, with a curved pink line behind it. Above, large hand-lettered text reads, “HERE’S A DRAGON CAT.” Below, handwritten text reads, “to remind you that if we’re going to imagine what could happen, we might as well imagine things going wonderfully right too :)”

Surprise dinner guest! Photo from my collection, no date/info.
Black and white photo that is a riot of patterns and shapes. Some food and drink is set up on a table with a white table cloth. Above it is a window through which a shorthaired black and white cat is emerging between very boldly printed floral curtains. The cat is so cute, a black tuxedo except is has a perfect black diamond on its nose. The bold pattern of the cat combined with the almost overwhelming pattern of the curtains makes the image a bit overwhelming at first until you can discern what’s going on.

A close-up, upward view of an old wrought-iron balcony decorated with rows of ceramic tiles, each painted with the same stylised orange and deep blue flower surrounded by small greyish leaves. Rust and weathering mark the dark metal frame, contrasting with the cheerful repetition of the floral pattern. Black cables run beneath the balcony across a sun-warmed yellow façade, while further balconies recede towards a clear blue sky.
