There was a sad episode in his first term where he overheard some trivial insult a youth shouted at him in public and instead of either playing deaf or engaging with the kid by listening first and then offering another viewpoint, he berated and humiliated that poor boy in front of the cameras.

I wonder what the great man would’ve made of all the magnificent PDFs that languish in various digital folders on The Cloud, saved there with my earnest intention of returning to them and their purported solutions to all that ails humanity just as soon a quiet moment arrives.

If it's any consolation, the people who investigate and document the gravest crimes known to humanity tend to 1. be infinitely patient and kind, 2. have a great deal of tolerance for dark humour

It can partly be explained by normalcy bias and it’s one of the reasons why we’re in this pickle. The failure of imagination of purportedly serious people who simply can’t believe that fascists (or anyone ‘crazy’) really believe what they claim they do. Group think then reinforces this dynamic.

If they really wanted AI to "solve climate change", the simplest (and likely only) way to do so would be to feed all of the IPCC's reports to one of their models, have it summarise the recommendations (check for accuracy, of course) and implement them. Done.

It’s a very good article, professor. May I humbly suggest also considering the Peacebuilding Commission? This often overlooked subsidiary body of both the GA and the Security Council could help a struggling young nation like the U.S. get back on its feet after transition www.un.org/peacebuildin...

*Record scratch, freeze frame* AMB BONNAFONT: Yup, that’s me. You’re probably wondering how I ended up in this situation
A screenshot from the opening of the UN Security Council’s 10,228th meeting dedicated to A.I. and international security, chaired by French Foreign Minister Noel Barrot. Over the minister’s right shoulder you can see Ambassador and Permanent Representative Jérôme Bonnafont, one of France’s (and the world’s) most accomplished diplomats, who seems to have picked something up and looks into the camera. The subtitles “on AI. Mr Sam Altman, Chief Executive Officer, OpenAI, Mr.” are visible on the screen.

There is some disagreement among member state representatives what constitutes the "crown jewel" of the Human Rights Council. Some say it's the Universal Periodic Review. In fact it's the Special Procedures.

The 2010s were wilder time than we care to remember. Ebola in West Africa, the wars in Syria, South Sudan, CAR, Yemen, Libya; Crimea/Donbas; ISIS; Europe’s solidarity crisis when people tried to cross the Mediterranean in search of a better life… Dr Liu was a voice of reason through a lot of it.
