*Record scratch, freeze frame* AMB BONNAFONT: Yup, that’s me. You’re probably wondering how I ended up in this situation
A screenshot from the opening of the UN Security Council’s 10,228th meeting dedicated to A.I. and international security, chaired by French Foreign Minister Noel Barrot. Over the minister’s right shoulder you can see Ambassador and Permanent Representative Jérôme Bonnafont, one of France’s (and the world’s) most accomplished diplomats, who seems to have picked something up and looks into the camera. The subtitles “on AI. Mr Sam Altman, Chief Executive Officer, OpenAI, Mr.” are visible on the screen.

Uggggh not even AlphaFold? It's right there on the first page of the UN independent scientific panel's report as the first example of useful applications... 😭
"These gains have unlocked useful applications across science, health, agriculture, accessibility, knowledge work and
information technology, including in the development of AI itself. For example, in science, AlphaFold has predicted
the structures of more than 200 million proteins, now used by over 3 million researchers, and accelerated drug design,
vaccine development and antibiotic resistance research. Radiologists have also used AI to detect breast cancer earlier,
while front-line health workers in low-resource settings use AI tools adapted to local languages to deliver better-quality
healthcare services." from https://www.un.org/independent-international-scientific-panel-ai/en/preliminary-report p.8

Happy to report from #AIforGood that the cybertruck is no longer here. This @wfp.org monster thing here ate it.
A tiny truck with monstrously large wheels that looks like it eats cyber trucks and SUVs for breakfast

There’s a UN publication for everything. TIL there’s a UNESCO booklet called “Growing up in a Connected World: A Family Guide for the Digital Age”: unesdoc.unesco.org/ark:/48223/p... Let’s see if that solves the discussions with the teens about screen time

It’s been a long first day at the first Global Dialogue on AI at the UN in Geneva and the automated subtitles are one of its unsung heroes
A panel with five people at the UN Global AI Dialogue. The subtitles on the screen behind them say “Thank you, Watermelon. OK.”A panelist at the UN Global AI Dialogue. Subtitles: “[we believed that] the invisible hen will take care of everything we now face[…]”UN Global AI Dialogue screen saying: “Presentation of the Preliminary Report of the Independent International
Scientific Panel on Al

With the cheeky subtitle “and it wasn't bad”

The Freedom Online Coalition Chair's statement is also out now www.linkedin.com/feed/update/...
The Freedom Online Coalition (FOC) deeply regrets that RightsCon 2026 will not proceed in Lusaka, Zambia from 5-8 May 2026.
RightsCon is one of the foremost civic spaces where digital rights defenders, civil society organizations, technologists, policymakers, and researchers come together to share knowledge, build solidarity, celebrate human rights, and advance the human rights agenda in the digital age. Its de facto cancellation inflicts a serious blow on these networks at a moment when they are already under strain from shrinking civic space, reduced funding, and mounting pressure on independent voices worldwide.
We are particularly saddened by the loss of what would have been a landmark gathering on the African continent — the first edition of RightsCon ever held in Southern Africa. This event in Lusaka carried immense promise: an opportunity to centre African perspectives and priorities, to strengthen connections between global and regional digital rights communities, and to amplify the voices of local activists, researchers, and advocates who seldom have the chance to engage with international counterparts on home ground. That opportunity has now been lost.
We also think of the hundreds of participants — individuals and organizations operating on constrained budgets in a period of devastating funding cuts — who made financial commitments and travel arrangements in good faith. Many were already travelling or preparing to depart. The human and institutional costs they now bear are real and should not go unacknowledged.
As the Chair of the FOC, we call on all governments and international organisations to protect and preserve the open, inclusive spaces in which digital rights and governance are debated and advanced. These discussions are not optional, and they cannot be postponed. At a time when internet freedom is under unprecedented pressure, the need for multistakeholder engagement on digital rights is more urgent than ever.

There's been some great, accessible books in recent years documenting how you can either have democracy or you can have (predatory) capitalism, but you can't really have both. @quinnslobodian.com & @georgemonbiot.bsky.social here for starters

If he gets a turn on the boss’s computer all bets are off
Far Side cartoon titled “God at His Computer” showing an old white man with a long white beard in front of a 1990s PC looking at a hapless man walking under a piano suspended from a crane. God’s right index finger hovers over a key that says “SMITE”

Almost 20 months now. Twenty months of this. Twenty. Fucking. MONTHS! And don't get me started on Sudan or South Sudan, Myanmar, the DRC, Ukraine, Haiti or Yemen, any other place where the lives and livelihoods of the poor count for nothing while the powerful do as they please, with impunity.
A four-panel cartoon of a mum (presumably in a Western country) with her child eating (but thinking of the starving children in Gaza), going to the park (but thinking of families forcibly displaced), putting a band-aid on their child's knee (but thinking of children grievously injured), finally of hugging their child (but thinking of the desperation of mothers hugging their children under the bombs). "How could anyone?"

Happy May Day to everyone except those who disrespect labour rights!
“Everyone is a worker” from Richard Scarry’s Busytown books with:
Farmer Alfalfa (a goat on a tractor)
Blacksmith Fox (a fox with an anvil)
Stitches the tailor (a rabbit holding up a thread and needle)
Grocer Cat (a cat with an apron)
Mommy (another cat holding a broom)
Huckle (a kitten holding a drum)
All are bipedal and wear human clothes

Pericles I'perikli:z
(c.495-429 BC), Athenian statesman and general. A champion of Athenian democracy, he pursued an imperialist policy and masterminded Athenian strategy in the Peloponnesian War. He commissioned the building of the Parthenon in 447 and promoted a flourishing of Athenian culture.

“champion of Athenian democracy” is underlined in green with the comment “what you like”

“an imperialist policy” is underlined in yellow with the comment “what they like”

I’d draft that speech for him. The jokes practically write themselves.
Cartoon by Ben Jennings in the Guardian titled "AMERICAN ROCKETS"

On the left side, Jeff Bezos giving thumbs up to a BLUE ORIGIN rocket taking off with the text:

“SENDING GIRL BOSSES INTO SPACE FROM EARTH”

On the right side, a missile about to hit a family of five in Gaza with the text: “WIPING FAMILIES OFF THE FACE OF EARTH”

My angrier self on the other social media side just posted this below. You can watch the UNSC debate on the Middle East Conflict here: webtv.un.org/en/asset/k1y... This is revolting. Sickening. 14 months of the wholesale destruction of Gaza and its people and the US still gives us cynical excuses.
A screenshot from Twitter with the following ALT Text "The representative of the United States vetoes the draft Security Council resolution presented by the 10 elected members of the SC that was aiming to end the destruction of Gaza and its people." retweeting an earlier screenshot from UN Web TV that showed the Russian Ambassador vetoing a resolution on ending their aggression against Ukraine. Both tweets read "Raise your hand if you don't give a fuck about international law"
