I didn't enjoy NES Metroid until I stopped trying to follow guides and started drawing my own maps. I loved videogames as a kid because they gave me a peek into another world. They're not just a bunch of systems to overcome. Sometimes it's worth taking time to explore and chart your own course.

I understand why it's so hard to do, of course. Game development is already thankless. Silent game development, with no one cheering you on and celebrating your progress, must be another order of magnitude of difficult to endure. But it really is the only foolproof strategy to avoid legal action.

Again, the only strategy for releasing fan games or mods like this is to never mention it once until it's done. Total radio silence until you just drop it, fully complete, onto the Internet when it's finished. Then there's nothing they can do -- the cat's out of the bag.

Between this and Pokopia, Koei Tecmo must be choosing to do this. Weird that Nintendo would allow it when they're game on card for everything else. Maybe the Big N has picked this one partner developer as their GKC guinea pig to see how people react.
