New Origin Story on Section 28: the law which halted progress on gay rights and drove it into reverse. Nearly every moment in this story - the moral panic, the press hysteria, the bad actors, the political cowardice - resembles what is happening now to trans people.

There’s an underlying assumption a lot of people are making that if a black guy successfully misleads you, it means you have set your racism levels too low.

In so far as it has any policy content, it is internally contradictory. He wants Britain "in the heart of Europe" but not actually in the EU or single market. He values diversity & fairness, but supports extreme anti-immigration policies which trap ppl in an administrative half life.

U.S. forces likely bombed an Iranian elementary school on Feb. 28 during an operation targeting a nearby military base, a New York Times analysis suggests. It is the deadliest known episode of civilian casualties since the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran — and no side has yet taken responsibility.

Labour's immigration announcement today is a reflection of the paucity of honest debate by BOTH political parties over the last decade on this issue. Labour has never made a counter-argument, or been honest about economic cost of immigration curbs, so it's stuck making Tory/Reform arguments 1/n

If you can't imagine being hungry, even for one day, try to imagine being hungry & unable to feed your children. Israel is starving Palestinians. It is a crime of such magnitude it is hard to imagine. We must insist that our government does everything it can to stop this. We must sanction Israel.

Incredibly depressing day. I've spent my entire life being told by British governments how dreadful immigration is. New Labour did it. The Coalition. The Brexiters. Now Starmer. All of them accusing the ones who came before them of failing to clamp down. The same old vacant mean-spirited bollocks.

We shouldn't waste time obsessing over ethnicity or rigid classifications like "White English" or "Black British." Instead, we should focus on defending and extending human rights - for everyone.

And if you're worried about "culture," remember: culture is always evolving. It’s a mix of influences from different people and ethnic groups over centuries. Even staple foods like potatoes (for British cuisine) and tomatoes (for Italian cuisine) didn’t exist in Europe before the 16th century. ⤵️

Racists worry that the "white race" might disappear. In Italy and the UK, some fear that in a few decades, most Italians and Britons won’t be white. Even if that happens—so what? Should we all start inbreeding just to preserve our precious pasty complexion? ⤵️

A British society with many people from many countries will not be any less British for this, it will simply be the UK of the third millennium, just as the UK of the second millennium was different from that of the first. Societies keep changing and evolving, it is normal and inevitable.

And yes, over the years, British society will change, as it has always happened and still happens in all countries in the world (except maybe North Korea, because no one would ever want to go there) ⤵️

If we really want to defeat traffickers and regulate immigration, we must offer legal and safe alternatives and give migrants the opportunity to integrate ⤵️
100 1
LucaCupani @lucacupani.bsky.social · 13/02/2025
A typical objection is: " but if we allow everyone to enter, there isn't enough space". It will never happen that "everyone moves here": when the UK allowed Ukrainians to enter without quotas and without obstacles, it is not as if the entire population of Ukraine moved here en masse ⤵️
100 1
LucaCupani @lucacupani.bsky.social · 13/02/2025
It would therefore be in the interest of the government to facilitate immigration, allowing migrants to have a residence permit, regular jobs and eventually citizenship, so that they can open bank accounts, rent houses, enroll their children in school and of course pay taxes ⤵️

LucaCupani @lucacupani.bsky.social · 13/02/2025
Instead, it would be appropriate to admit that the UK - like all Western countries - needs immigrants, not only to carry out jobs that its citizens often no longer want to do. It also needs them because they generally are younger and more likely to have children ⤵️
