How does this person think “cojones” is pronounced
The rear of a Tesla, showing the license plate and license plate frame. The plate reads “NOPONYZ” and the frame around it reads “just cojones”, which does not rhyme with ponies.

So I found a post from a small account that was really irritating, but I didn't want to dunk on the person. So I built a feature: anonymous dunk-quoting. Then I ... apparently didn't bookmark the original post to dunk on? Anyway here's a test.
Screenshot of a post, author hidden: EXCLUSIVE: Sam Altman met with top power utilities to discuss ways to secure the electrical grid.

He also offered one possible solution to the cybersecurity risks: OpenAI’s own cyber services.

It’s been about a decade since I got blocked by someone for pointing out that they’re Wrong On The Internet. It is not something I make a habit of. But this is a crisis and we all need to act like it.

@utopia-defer.red depends on what you mean by "promulgated" but the tech rank and file are still left of their bosses and the general Bay Area public. From today's Chronicle:
A graph showing that more than 90% of the Bay Area's tech workers who give to politics give to Democrats, more than other workers in the Bay Area and up from the mid-80s in the 2012 election. Text included in the screenshot says: "Some 93% of software developers and other tech workers donated solely or primarily to Democratic committees in 2024 — a share that’s been consistent in the Trump era and actually up since the 2012 election cycle. @hurricanexyz.bsky.social also this made me learn many things I did not know. I present them ranked from “I am curious” to “where can I get the mind bleach” 1. There is a second Christmas album 2. There is a second War Child 3.

This is not my area of practice, but isn't that only true if it's on CD-ROM, and otherwise per the Compendium:
Screenshot of Copyright Compendium 1509.2(E)(2), which reads:
Audiovisual Works Fixed in Machine-Readable Copies Other Than a CD-ROM

To register an audiovisual work that has been fixed or published solely in machine-readable copies other than a CD-ROM, the applicant should submit identifying material, such as:
• A videotape or a series of photographs depicting representative portions of the copyrightable content of the work; and
• A separate synopsis of the work.
37 C.F.R. § 202.20(c)(2)(viii)(B). The applicant also may submit any packaging and/or instructional material that accompanies the pictorial images, if that material contains copyrightable authorship.
Examples of audiovisual works that fall within this category include arcade games and video-games that are not fixed on CD-ROMs

Bookshop.org is amazing because they build software for public good without accepting compromise: it has to be every bit as good as the alternatives. So I regret to inform that if you excitedly pre-order a friend’s book, Bookshop will happily let you do that repeatedly without a warning 😂
Three pristine paperback copies of John Fleck’s “Ribbons of Green”, stacked on each other in a fan, suggesting that the photographer was over enthusiastic in preordering the brand new book.

A very large bank vault door, mostly brass-colored, with many gears, pistons, and dials visible.

Neighborhood mood. Little hard to see at phone scale but this is very obviously hand-lettered, probably by the sign artist who lives around this address. Who is genuinely an artist! And I want to commission his work.
A hand-lettered sign for a yard sale, stapled to a utility pole. Two qualities make it more notable than most yard sale signs: it is beautifully, meticulously hand-lettered, and at the top it says “fuck ai slop” in the same size lettering as “yard sale”.

Same intersection now by the way. Waymo inclusion unintentional but indicative.
An urban intersection with somewhat complicated street geometry, not a mere four-way stop. On the right, a cafe is visible; in the middle of the intersection is a gardened area with three very tall palm trees, and three multi-unit houses behind them. To the left a large tree is visible. Several cars are parked throughout, with a Waymo stopped at a stop line in the intersection itself.

Am looking at a lot of graphs of Wikipedia readership tonight and this is the only good one.
A graph titled “antipope: average monthly +156%”. Alas the graph itself shows that the title is misleading, with consistently low numbers except for a single giant transient spike in what looks to be early 2025. The Y axis is unlabeled.

0 readers was deliberately provocative, but if you're more confident that there will always be some readers, then the strategy process still needs to start with a graph like this one:
Graph of readers of US daily newspapers, showing a peak around 60M and a 2022 readership of 20M.

Now you’re making me all verklempt. (Weeks after I took this picture the apartment was converted from married students housing to visiting faculty housing.)
A large gothic cathedral filling almost the entire frame, from a high angle such that some of the roof is visible. In the background one can see that the church is in a dense city. The cathedral is identifiable as St. John the Divine in Manhattan.

Loved this over the weekend so doing it again. Post a pic you took, no context, to bring some zen to the feed.

Wrote something that came out muuuuuch stronger than I had intended—this tool can, at best, replace one particular use case, not all labor lawyers! Deleting to keep the notices clear and so as not to alarm anyone, but screenshotting for future accountability.
Screenshot of a toot by Luis Villa, with text: “My (very glancing) understanding is that the relevant set of labor law cases to the particular topic he's interested in is very, very small, so "replace labor lawyers with a tiny shell script" is not implausible.”

I decided to go with more zen.
Colorful swirls, mostly yellow, with hints of red, white, and even a tiny bit of blue and green. On inspecting them closely you can see they are glass, and some are translucent while others are striped or ribbed. A glass art connoisseur might recognize them as a work by Chihuly.

You’re right that skins aren’t money. But the statute doesn’t say “gambling for money is illegal”. It says very plainly that it is illegal to gamble for “something of value”, which at great length is defined as anything that can be “exchanged for money”. Like skins.
“Something of value” means any money or property, any token, object or article exchangeable for money or property, or any form of credit or promise directly or indirectly contemplating transfer of money or property or of any interest therein, or involving extension of a service, entertainment or a privilege of playing at a game or scheme without charge.

As one simple example: the NDA triage skill says in the persona section that “[y]ou rapidly evaluate” NDAs. Why rapidly? Why not thoroughly? or carefully? Is this intentional because of token counts? Or just aping what you’d tell a first-year (“don’t spend more than X minutes on this”)?
Screenshot that says “You are an NDA screening assistant for an in-house legal team. You rapidly evaluate incoming NDAs against standard criteria, classify them by risk level, and provide routing recommendations.”

Key: accurate and cheap, allowing important and impactful predictions.
Screenshot reading: “HiRO-ACE reproduces the distribution of extreme precipitation rates through the 99.99th percentile, with time-mean precipitation biases below 10% almost everywhere. The framework generates plausible tropical cyclones, fronts, and convective events from poorly resolved coarse inputs. Its computational efficiency allows generation of 6-hourly high-resolution regional precipitation for decades of simulated climate within a single day using one H100 GPU, while the probabilistic design enables ensemble generation for quantifying uncertainty. This establishes an Al-enabled pathway for affordably leveraging the realism of expensive km-scale simulations to support local climate adaptation planning and extreme event risk assessment.”

Oh and cycling, because freedom and autonomy and climate. Though less so lately because middle age joints :( this is my @ternbicycles.com GSD, with around 12,000km on it.
An orange cargo bicycle in the street in front of some houses. It is packed very full, with a large bag on the front, a sleeping bag hanging off the back, and a grey and gold flag on a flagpole. Also visible on the flagpole are a child’s colored pinwheel, and an orange flag.

Nerd conferences used to be different. Good to know American engineers have always been slobs though. (About a 1926 standards meeting, mostly between Europeans and Americans, in New York and Philadelphia.) #standards
Picture of a book’s text. The text reads:

In February, le Maistre informed his American co-organizer about the packing instructions he planned to send the many "European Engineers of world wide fame" who soon would be "em-barking by the Cunarder 'Andania'" to attend it.In light of the comparative informality of most American engineers and the conflicting demands of customs elsewhere, le Maistre wrote:

I am advising [the Europeans] to bring:
a. Evening dress
b. Smoking dress
c. Morning coat for official opening and that sort of affair. Foreigners as you know, use a tailcoat a great deal, which corresponds to the French.
d. No high hat
& I am telling the ladies [accompanying wives of standardizers] no furs are necessary.

So now I know: blame the Germans. #standards
Picture of a book, open to the following text:
The German innovation that generated the most enthusiastic response from the national secretaries, and that was copied worldwide in the 1920s, was the practice of publishing each DIN standard as a separate numbered document, often with separate subsections, that could be sold in whole or in part to interested firms.'3 Today, this form of standards publication is a global genre. In fact, such documents (now often electronic) are what most people involved with private standard setting consider standards to be.

Secret Santa brought me this extremely nerdy book. On page 8, I learned that ISO is HQd in the same office park as Sonar. After Christmas I will demand to learn why no one told me this 😂
Picture of a spread open book. The title visible on cover and spine is Engineering Rules: Global Standards Setting since 1880, by JoAnne Yates and Craig N. Murphy.Text from a book. Highlighted is the text “in an unremarkable building near the Geneva airport overlooking a suburban train station and a highway cloverleaf”
