It's the time of year when I really miss my days at Ohio University. Brilliant fall colors. Listening to the Frogwhompers at the Back Door. Starting the weekend on Thursday afternoon, playing Captain Fantastic pinball at the Graduate. Tripping over big bell bottom jeans, not so much. 😏

And here is my much-read copy of one of them! It's probably the first "adult" novel I ever read, at age 11 or so, as a rabid Man From U.N.C.L.E fan. This was the first in the series of tie-ins, and still one of my favorites.

Paperback copy of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. by Michael Avallone, from 1965. The first in a long tie-in series of novels, it was also known as The Thousand Coffins Affair. Robert Vaughn as Napoleon Solo couches on a metal staircase, gun drawn.

A couple of weeks after 5th grade started, I asked to be transferred out of the sweet but mostly boring teacher's class into the "mean" but harder teacher's class. I'm sure the other kids thought I was weird, but I didn't regret it.

In honor of Ralph Vaughan Williams's birthday, I'm rereading the #AlastairReynolds short story, The Receivers, an alternate history tale in which WWI has dragged on for decades and RVW's life as a composer never happened. A favorite author writing about a favorite composer - can't do much better!
