Not to take away from celebrating Carson, but she's a "former professor" here in large part because the university shut down her department and cancelled its classes. What pride does the institution claim now—years later—when austerity is forcing other scholars out? What does that 'pride' do?

And I'm sure you're already aware of itch.io for interesting indie VNs way outside the mainstream male demographic (especially in game jams). But otome games are where you'd find Japanese VNs with straight romance aimed at women, you'd find plenty here: www.reddit.com/r/otomegames/

For well-loved Japanese VNs, a few recs! - The House in Fata Morgana (Gothic horror / tragedy / historical) - 428: Shibuya Scramble (police procedural & thriller / incredible comedy / so many intertwined paths) - Famicom Detective Club / Paranormasight for detective work (haven't read myself)

I love The Annual Ghost Town Pumpkin Festival so much. I think this is my third year playing it. Small MMOs (I'm sure there's a better existing term for it) make me so happy and this has been a really fun one to play with my kids. It's only online every October and new stuff is added each year

Period "pieces" I experienced this week while on leave from the indignities of work… Sense and Sensibility (1811) Sense and Sensibility (2026) Marie-Antoinette (2006) Marie-Antoinette: 20th anniversary exhibit at the Petit Trianon in Versailles I enjoyed it all a lot…

Cover of the Standard Ebooks edition of the novel by Jane Austen: "At the Mirror" (1827) by Georg Friedrich Kersting depicts a Victorian-era lady arranging her in front of a mirror.

The poster of Sense and Sensibility (2026) depicts Daisy-Edgar Jones and George MacKay in a passionnate embrace on a wild, green landscape

The well-known poster of Marie-Antoinette (2006) by Sofia Coppola, with a smiling, impish Kirsten Dunst with a beige dress, elaborate hairstyle, shining earring

The poster for the Behind the scenes exhibit on Marie-Antoinette at the Petit Trianon in Versailles, pink background, and the picture of Kirsten Dunst dressed as the queen holding the movie clapper before the shoot begins.

These short intense sprints can be so so gratifying though, ahah, it's such a good state to be in (genuinely it teaches so much)… But yes, the "at the cost of everything else in my life" part is always trickier, I hate that part, it's so hard (impossible) to "afford" in regular life 😔
