I've wrestled with this in relation to my anti-censorship stance, but I feel like writing and publishing fucked-up fiction is very different than disseminating images/video/etc involving the nonconsensual treatment of real people, whether that's revenge porn or murder.

As a preteen, I accidentally watched the televised execution of Saddam Hussein. I just happened to be in a room where someone had turned the TV to that channel, and I was so stunned as I realized what was happening that I forgot I could leave. I don't think broadcasting executions does any good.

In light of some magazines pulling scummy things on creators lately, I’m doing a little thread on short story rights. I don't want anybody getting taken advantage of. Also, if you're new, this stuff can be confusing!

I think you’re right. Vimes and I have that in common.

I feel like there's something very Vimes-coded about grudgingly doing the right thing while not believing you're a good person. Although getting sober was an important part of that, for Vimes.

I'm getting bottom surgery on December 9, two months from today!!! I've started a GoFundMe to help with recovery costs (including travel costs for my girlfriend, who'll be my primary caregiver during that time, and general living costs). Please help if you can! www.gofundme.com/f/support-lu...

Also the world where disability benefits are easy to get and provide enough to not just survive but live comfortably! And the world where it's easy to medically transition your gender! And the world where sexual assault is extremely rare! Like, I desperately wish things were as fine as they assume.

Radically reducing Rowling's profits and visibility is going to involve winning over a lot of people who have previously liked her work. Like, by definition, that is the task. So if you never liked her, fine, but saying her books were never good is unlikely to persuade *your target audience*.

I got to see @johngreensbluesky.bsky.social when he stopped in Minnesota on his Hollywood, Ending book tour last night! I've been a fan for over half my life (note the Will Grayson, Will Grayson charm on my charm bracelet), but this was my first time seeing John in person. Viva Nerdfighteria!

It is the start of Banned Books Week and as such it's an EXCELLLLENT moment to donate to @authorsabb.bsky.social. We are laser focused on tbe single issue of fighting book bans. It's hard work, and we've done it with all volunteers for about 3 years-- and now we finally have a program manager.

Classic children's fantasy I read around age 9 Narnia series by CS Lewis Matilda by Roald Dahl Half Magic by Edward Eager The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster The Borrowers by Mary Norton A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L'Engle (The Oz series and My Father's Dragon were earlier but great too)

I really liked the Septimus Heap series by Angie Sage in late elementary. Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine is deservedly a classic. The Book of Ember series by Jeanne DuPrau is fascinating!

Other recs: Shannon Hale has lots of middle-grade and young YA fantasy. I'd start with Princess Academy or Book of a Thousand Days. Most Terry Pratchett books are for adults, but The Wee Free Men has a 9yo protagonist and reads like middle grade/young YA. Brain Jacques' Redwall series!

I read Tamora Pierce's Protector of the Small quartet when I was ten, and I think it was a good introduction to her at that age, since Kel isn't really interested in sex the way Alanna is. The Circle of Magic quartet (from Pierce's Emelan universe) is also good for that age.

The security guards have told me that they're no longer allowed to unlock the products, so other Cub employees have to do it, and they're short-staffed. 😡

At a BOOK EVENT? I skimmed the post at first and assumed this was at a hockey event, and yeah, sometimes people who don't read much are very surprised to find out that their job or hobby is being written about or sexualized. But like. Hockey romance is one of the biggest book trends right now.

There was a structure to help him do that in a way that reduced the risks to others. Meanwhile, my partner once had a male boss whose whole online deal was being loudly feminist and fighting other men "on behalf of" women. That small business blew up when it turned out he was a serial predator.

Letters went out to the congregation periodically making sure people were aware of his criminal background, the existence of his accountability committee, and that he wasn't allowed to be around children unsupervised. I liked him. I'm glad he had the chance to turn his life around. And I'm glad +

This rings true to my experience. At the church I used to attend, there was a member who had been both a victim and then a perpetrator of CSA, re-enacting his trauma on others during a period of addiction. He went to prison. He got sober. He joined our church. He had an accountability committee +

Yeah, when I did it, I immediately emailed it to my BFF, a computer science major who'd been in high school choir with me when we learned the warmup. She was proud of me for figuring out how to code it on my own, but she wanted me to take it a step further and make a dictionary with pitch names.

I only ever took one computer science class, and it was basically intro to Python, but I remember when I realized that I could make it spit out a choir warmup: 1 1 2 1 1 2 3 2 1 1 2 3 4 3 2 1 1 2 3 4 5 4 3 2 1 1 2 3 4 5 6 5 4 3 2 1 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1

My younger sister is taller than I am, too, but our three-year age gap meant she didn't pass me until I was in high school. For much of our childhoods, we could share clothes, but she often didn't give things back, so I sometimes refused to lend her anything.

I'm not sure if you're aware that Chris is running for the California state legislature and you're making a joke about how he's clearly so suitable for a legislative role given his detailed proposal, or if you don't know and are genuinely making a suggestion, so just in case: he's running already.

I got an ARC of this book. After reading the first 30% in small chunks, I just read the final 70% all today. SO GOOD. ✅️ MC with terrible self-esteem ✅️ Extremely caring, patient LI ✅️ Paisley's signature prioritization of happiness over "success" ✅️ Excellent pacing ✅️ Neurodivergent self-acceptance

I remember learning about the AIDS quilt as a teenager, and then how much harder it hit a few years later once I understood my own queerness & had started coming out. I am not an immigrant, but as the song says, every one of these people are ours. There is no such thing as other people's children.

If folks in the Democratic party cannot find it within themselves to be absolute staunch supporters of trans people's rights because trans people are people who have inherent worth, then they should at least do it because if we give up on trans people, then we're literally giving up on democracy.

Keith sues people like the folks defrauding Somali families for places to live, or mega landlords whose places are slums because they want to squeeze every dollar out of tenants. He sues employers committing wage theft and companies engaged in illegal price fixing. It’s ALL affordability.

At the risk of giving an unwelcome clarification: "down bad" often refers to having strong romantic feelings toward someone, especially if it's soon after meeting them. I believe this post is related to Dex's recent post about a guy moving his flight to stay in Minneapolis longer and see Dex again.

"This election is about the threat of trans kids" is the worst possible messaging for Dems yet so many candidates are leaning into it. No voter will flip R->D over it. Low-info voters read this as "you're focused on bullshit that doesn't affect me" while the base reads this as "you're an asshole."
