Hi everyone, In my yearlong program Life Skills For Young Scientists, we learn essential skills for a happy and productive career that grad school doesn't cover, starting with mindfulness and self-compassion. Registration for the fourth iteration is now open, details at lisys.ing. Please share!

The same comment applies if we were discussing male fox-newsers like Hegseth. No judgment of people using makeup. But if they do it to blend with a 'type' and so become less individual, that's sad.

I don't even know if one or both the original images are AI. If real, they are so different they could be different women. It seems that Stamper would like to be seduced by makeup woman but not wake up next to no-makeup woman. Some of us prefer to see people as they really are

The US currently has more citizens in blue states that love Canada more than they love the US as it is now. But you're still right to stay out until things change on a national level

I suspect, sadly, that Wikipedia and other original-source sites will lose to AI, but feel that support and use should be encouraged anyway, no matter how quixotic

Started a monthly donation to @wikipedia.org, IMO a much more reliable starting point than AI. I also changed from Chrome to Duck Duck Go, where a search always shows you the prime source for their answer, which is often Wikipedia.

Often, tripods come with one leg that detaches, but don't get a tripod that's too lightweight

Hints depend on the camera gear. Agree with earlier post that monopod more useful than tripod. Exception is when you know where the bird will be, e.g., at hummingbird feeder or on a snag out in a marsh or pond. Then ... patience!

I like tides. Here's a thread by others about tidal variations on a little-known 18.6 year "lunar node tide" cycle, that has surprisingly large impacts ranging from coastal flooding risks to Arctic coastal air temperatures to Antarctic dense water formation.

Nice to see other people interested in the lunar node tide. Appears to play a role in Antarctic Dense Water outflow (Bowen et al, 2023) among many other impacts on decadal scale climate system variability.

To see how important US science is, consider measurements of changes in ocean heat content. US data are ~53% of the total. Over half! But removing the US data is worse than randomly removing 80% of the total data, because unlike other countries, the US makes measurements everywhere. 🧪🌊
