These graphs are so fucking bad. Like not only are they very difficult to compare with one another, some have innane choices. Why is the gap between 12% and 24% the same as the gap between 6-8% ON THE SAME GRAPH?
Image 1: A set of two graphs from two different autistic children on their rates of private (non social) and incomprehensible dialogue when alone. The first graph ranges from 0 to 70% duration of speech, showing incomprehensible evenly between 0 and 10% whilst private goes up and down from 65% to 5%.
The second graph ranges from 0 to 90% and only shows private speech. The child starts at 30% and gradually evens out to around 70% average speech. Image 2: A set of two graphs from the data of one autistic child. The first are rates of private (non social) and social communication whilst the child was in the bathroom. The graph goes from 0-8% in increments of 2% before jumping to 12-24% which is about as large a gap as the 6-8% margin below it. The graph shows the child's social speech jumping from 8 to 24% initially before dropping down to 0% by 15 sessions where it stabilises. The private speech sits around 5% though looks like a much more dramatic difference.

The second graph is from 0-10% rates of communication but only shows private communication. The rate is consistently around 3% with one jump to 10%. Again, this looks more dramatic because of the scale used.

So this is part of a larger explanation in which Lovaas outlines his treatment plan for autistic children who need outpatient psychiatric care. And as an ex undergraduate student let me speak for all of us when I say that we should not be in the room whilst anyone is first accessing treatment.
Quotation which reads: " Typically, the first treatment session begins with the child and the treatment team (which consists of the clinic supervisor, parent, a graduate student, and three or four undergraduate student volunteers) together in one room."

Unlike Simon Clarke, I was alive during the 1970s. A combination of low inequality, low crime and aspects of culture made 1976 one of the happiest years on record in the UK. The IMF bailout had zero impact. Lesson for Simon, happiness is not just a function of wealth.

Text: Miliband says Labour will stand against antisemitism wherever it finds it, and stand against those who seek the destruction of Israel.

But the foreign secretary says this "cannot justify the suffering the Netanyahu government has inflicted in Gaza and the West Bank", adding that it is a "stain on the conscience of the world".

He says to those who have been "moved and outraged by the plight of Palestinian people - we hear you, you were right".

Look, on the one hand it is just auditory recordings. On the other hand, it's auditory recordings of a young disabled girl between the age of 10-16 in the bathroom. It's just profoundly gross and invasive as well as completely unnecessary.
Quotation which reads: " The ward staff reported that [Redacted] spent considerable time in the bathroom, where she would exhibit considerable delayed echolalia. Therefore, we also recorded her verbal behavior in that setting by attaching a microphone to her shirt with a lightweight (3-pound) cassette recorder in a small backpack designed especially for her. The recordings were started as soon as she entered the room and were terminated some 30 min later when she was taken out."

Let me answer these in order. Yes. No. Considering you define corrective as conversion therapy, it is never far enough. No. Yes. Glad we could hash those out.
Quotation which reads: " We must consider carefully what we call “deviant,” however. It has been alleged that transsexual, transvestic, or homosexual behavior is deviant or pathological only in the eyes of a skewed society with distorted and antiquated social standards. But is that indeed always true? If a boy believes that he can bear children and wishes to do so, and wears maternity clothes, is this not deviant? How far must this belief go before one identifies it as requiring corrective efforts? If a person states that his or her genitals are not rightfully his or her property and wishes them surgically altered, isn’t that pathological? Should penectomy in a transsexual be an elective surgical procedure, as is the cosmetic removal of a wart or the procedure of face-lifting?"

When I think of my disabilities, of course the first thing I think of is that I want to wear a dress. Look, being trans or gender deviant causes social issues but those do not constitute a disability. It's just prejudice. It would be like saying being gay is a- No wait they think that is too.
Quotation which reads: " The insistent nature of such compulsive wishes to cross-dress can have serious disabling consequences. In adults they may range from an interference with normal heterosexual relationships to a continuing sense of shame and fear of disclosure which can be extremely disabling."

Gee, I wonder why the gender deviant adults who clinicans interact with would all want elimination of their gender deviance. I wonder if there is some reason this group would specifically want this. A bias in the sample one might say.
Quotation which reads: "With rare exception, adults who demonstrate such compulsive cross-dressing recognize it as at least awkward and in many instances, disruptive and distressing. The elimination of such behavior is actively sought by many and is seen by them as a desirable therapeutic outcome."

This might be me reading in a modern context, but there is a degree to which this paper seems to be stating that it is progressive of them to do conversion therapy.
Quotation which reads: "These boys would be more acceptable to both male and female peers if they could overcome their deficit in and aversion to masculine behavior, and reduce the frequency of stereotyped feminine behaviors. That is, it would be helpful to provide for each youngster the opportunity for the full range rather than a restricted range of gender role behaviors."

I found this passage infinitely funny in both it's pettiness and insecurity. Like calling people "engrossed" with the problem of gender identity just to postulate your own system with no backing.
Quotation which reads: " Although the recent investigators have become engrossed with the problem of gender identity (e.g., Green, 1974, who uses the term "sexual identity conflict"), our own research indicates that within the general class of male childhood gender problems there are two major syndromes. First, boys with ''gender identity disturbance'' (also referred to as ' 'cross-gender identity") have assumed the sex-role identity of the female (cf., definition by Green, 1968). In addition to evidencing feminine behavior, the boy with gender identity disturbance wishes to be or believes himself to be a girl. Second, we propose that "gender behavior disturbance" is a legitimate clinical constellation distinct from disturbance in gender identity. The gender behavior disturbed boy exhibits feminine sex typed behaviors to a greater or lesser degree without evidencing a female core identity. This syndrome has been overlooked by previous writers, but is a significant clinical entity accompanied by child adjustment difficulties as well as a prognosis for compulsive stereotyped transvestic behaviors in adulthood. Neither of these syndromes is transient in nature, but rather are characterized by deeply ingrained, chronic maladaptive patterns of behavior in childhood."

You know, usually I get annoyed when what is clearly a single study is split into multiple papers in order to increase the authors prestige. I never thought I would read a paper and go "No, this definitely should have been a different study, this is not remotely the same."
Extract which reads: " Of the five psychotic children worked with in Experiment 1, one was discharged and was therefore no longer available and two had become clinically unmanageable because of their aggression. The two remaining children, [Redacted] and [Redacted], were worked with in Experiment 2. A third child, [Redacted] , was added.

Not that this is the major issue with this procedure, since its later adapted to punish the kid for "feminine behaviours". But like, the classmates knew right. They're 8, they are not that ignorant. They totally figured it out.
Quotation which reads: " The teacher was trained to administer the response-cost reinforcement contingency for [Redacted]. After a baseline period of 18 school days, the response- cost contingency was applied to [Redacted]'s four brat behaviors. In the presence of the teacher, Dr. Rekers explained to [Redacted] that he would automatically receive 10 points at the beginning of each school day. He would lose one point each time he (a) created a class disturbance, (b) bossed another child, (c) behaved rudely to the teacher, or (d) teased another child. During the day, the teacher would say to [Redacted], "One point," to indicate to [Redacted] (without the knowledge of other classmates) that he had lost one point for the behavior he was currently performing. At the end of the school day, the teacher subtracted the points [Redacted] had lost and [Redacted] received 2 minutes of free time for each point remaining."

I want you to read this paragraph and wonder to yourself, what is causing this child's problems? If you had to summarise what they were facing, what difficulties they were dealing with and the causes of those difficulties, what would you say?
Quotation which Reads: Since the age of 4 years, [Redacted] had pronounced feminine inflection and content of speech. He was extremely verbal, and his conversations were dominated by topics such as dresses, cosmetics, maternal roles, female impersonators, delivering babies, and female underclothing. He had several recurring exclamatory feminine remarks, such as "goodness gracious," and "Oh, dear me." His feminine gestures were exaggerations of an effeminate swishy gait and ann movements. He would typically sit with his legs crossed very effeminately and his arms folded like a female model. At home, he would frequently use towels after a bath to simulate female garments and long hair. In his peer relationships [Redacted] passively allowed boys to tease him without asserting himself in return. He preferred girls in play, assuming the female role himself with great frequency. He preferred girls' toys, particularly dolls, and he played house with his sister frequently. [Redacted] was ostracized by his male peers who labeled him "sissy" and "queer." He harbored a strong fear of "getting hurt" and feigned illnesses and injuries to avoid play with boys. Not only was [Redacted] labeled by his peers as effeminate, but he referred to himself as a "sissy" and "fag", and his speech regularly implied that he preferred to be considered a girl."

Huh...I wonder if there is some throughline in Lovaas work, where he can't be bothered to stand up against injustice. And so instead, just defaults to punishing the oppressed so that they can better fit in, instead of doing any hard work...
Quotation which reads: " There are at least four related reasons why one may want to treat a child like [Redacted]. First, [Redacted] feminine behavior was increasingly leading him to social isolation and ridicule. Boys like [Redacted] are typically scorned by their peers and live a miserable social life (cf. Stoller, 1970). While society probably could afford to become more tolerant with individuals with sex-role deviations, the facts remain that it is not tolerant, and, realistically speaking, it is potentially more difficult to modify society's behaviors than [Redacted]'s, in order to relieve [Redacted]'s suffering."

Based.
Quotation which reads: " The boy's clinical history paralleled the retrospective reports of adult transsexuals, including (1) feminine voice inflection and predominantly feminine content in speech, (2) verbal self-reference as "sissy" and "fag" and statements about his preference to be a girl, (3)feminine hand and arm gestures and "swishy" gait, (4) an aversion to masculine play activities, (5) a strong preference for girl playmates and taking a feminine role in play and role-playing, and (6) improvised cross-dressing."

Ah yes, 1.1 self destructive behaviours a second. That seems reasonable. And not at all like you had a terrible coding system for defining self destructive behaviour which seperates continuous acts of self destruction into discrete chunks to make your data look more impressive. I love science.
Quotation which reads: " When the children were left free to injure themselves without parents or nursing staff intervening, the self-destructive behavior fell off in a very gradual but lawful manner from, for example, a high of some 4000 self-destructive acts in the first hour to 3500 the second hour, then 300, and then slowly to zero by the tenth session."

It is in reading this description that one can almost understand the desperation of these researchers. I say almost because a second of self reflection would reveal that their methods just trade one kind of suffering for another.
Quotation which reads: "One of the most bizarre and most profoundly sick behaviors which one will ever encounter is self-mutilation, which is characteristic of so many psychot- ic and retarded children. One can see children who tear with their teeth large amounts of tissue from their shoulders and arms, who chew off part of their fingers, hit their heads so violently against the wall that they detach their retinas, and accidentally would kill themselves unless they were somehow sedated or restrained. Many of these children, although they may be only eight or nine years old, have spent most of their lives in restraints, tied down both by their feet and arms."

Why bother understanding why a condition exists when we can just shock train the children to not be weird? Surely by changing behaviour we "cure" the underlying cause right....RIGHT?!
Quotation which reads: "From a behavioristic viewpoint, it is quite unnecesary to postulate such an underlying disease or entity, and indeed it is quite possible that the different autistic behaviors are related to several different kinds of antecedent conditions."

Bold words from a research team that can't use statistical tests correctly...or sometimes at all. And also can't find participant numbers in the double digits for each group. I'm so glad you're confident that your rickety jenga tower of research is good enough for sweeping conclusions.
Quotation which reads: “In the very short span of 12 years, behavior modification has contributed in a major way to the education of the autistic child. It's major contribution lies in its demonstrated effectiveness. As such, it is the only intervention which has been empirically demonstrated to offer help for autistic children".

God this poor kid. I remember just the couple times my dad told me to stop playing as a girl in video games cause we had a transphobic asshole living at home.
Quotation which reads: "When [Redacted] began tantrum or other uncooperative behaviors (he typically did when his mother ignored him), the experimenter was particularly supportive of the mother. In fact, when the mother first withdrew her attention for [Redacted] feminine play, he put so much "pressure" on her (by alternating between crying and aggressing at her) to reinstate the attention, that we had to terminate the session and ask [Redacted] to leave for a minute. Before sending [Redacted] back to the playroom, we reassured the mother empathetically that she was doing the right thing and was doing it well, and that we would continue to be available in the observation room to assist her"

This is a fucking hilarious and very reasonable response from this child. Good on them. And I am grateful for moments like this that are reported in normal practice around the time. At least I would be. IF THEY DIDN'T NAME THE AND REMOVED HIS RIGHT TO PRIVACY!
Quotation which reads: " The modification procedure consisted of asking [Redacted] if he wanted a cookie each day during snack times. If he responded by saying "yes" he would receive a cookie, and if he made no response, he received nothing. During the first two and a half days of conditioning, [Redacted] faIled to respond and actively engaged in non attentive and interpersonally disruptive behaviors when asked if he wanted a cookie. On the third day, during afternoon snack time, [Redacted] persistent teacher took [Redacted] shoulders in order to try to get his attention and asked him if he wanted a cookie. Sure, punishment is unethical, immoral and impractical. But consider that the Egyptians did it and mothers that do it justify the fact they do it. THIS IS CONCLUSIVE PROOF THAT WE SHOULD EXPERIMENT WITH BEATING AUTISTIC KIDS!!!!
Quotation which reads: "Despite this evidence, the use of punishment to modify deviant human behavior has been quite restricted. perhaps this comes about because much of these data are based on animal research. However, the use Of punishment in the society at large can be fairly well judged by Will Durant's comments in his History of Civilization (13). Durant quotes an early Egyptian manuscript as follows: ' 'The youth has a back and attends When he is beaten, for the ears of the young are placed on the back," and a former student who wrote to his teacher did'st beat my back and thy instructions went in my ear." Over the several thousand years since these observations were made, we are still faced with the fact that punishment is fairly commonly used. This is by the results of the survey of Sears, e' al. (14) on child rearing. The bulk of the mothers surveyed utilized physical punishment on their children at one time or another (p, 325), and the majority reported that it helped in rearing children. Despite this long history of usage, actual studies on punishment with human beings have been somewhat limited. The possible use of punishment as a treatment technique has been almost completely ignored."

There are three women who wrote this paper alongside Lovaas. Three. They literally outnumber him and yet there is still this puritanical stupidity about sex roles.
A pair of quotations are shown. The first quotation reads: "For example, we failed to observe that the boys imitated appropriate the male adults’ masculine sex-role behavior, or that the girls imitated their appropriate sex-role behavior without additional training"

The second reads: "appropriate sex role behaviour, e.g. gardening, pounding nails and doing exercises for the boys, and preparing simple snacks, curling hair and ironing clothes for the girls"

For once I cannot blame Lovaas for these unreadable graphs. But I can blame the Journal of Experimental Child Psychology and the bane to all research Elsevier for horrific historical preservation practices with their papers. It's making the BBC look competent in their archival processes.
An image showing a set of cumulative graphs, which show an increase in response to a stimulus. However, most of the lines are impossible to discern accurately due to image compression and poor print quality, meaning large sections of the data from the lines are completely missing.

The figure addendum reads: "Fig.2. The S1's performance on the bar as cumulative curves. The upward painting hatchmarks on tbe curves indicate delivery of the social stimulus contingent upon bar pressing. The downward pointing hatchmarks indicate the presentation of the social stimulus as discriminative for food during the A-sessions and mark time out for feeding during the E-sessions"

I don't think this is true. In fact I know it isn't true, the DSM-I defined autism as a childhood version of schizophrenia. The only thing I can find in the DSM-I criteria is "a strong tendency to retreat from reality." Which is both bad diagnostics and not close to their quote.
Quotation which reads: "During those 2 years, people had lavished affection on them (fed, rocked and played with them, etc.). Despite those 2 years of intensive work, the children still behaved as if they had never seen or heard the staff personnel - they were completely unresponsive to any social stimuli. They behaved "as if" they were blind and deaf, which is diagnostic of autism."

You know, sometimes I learn new things about psychological history. And I start to understand why even I, a person with a degree in this specific area, fear psychiatric care. Its because the geniuses in the field thought large doses of insulin to cause comas would make kids less autistic.
A quotation which reads "A wide range of approaches has been taken in an effort to alter the symptom picture of this disorder. The efforts have included insulin subcoma, drugs (stimulants and tranquilizers), electric shock( 2), various psychotherapeutic approaches(3, 4, 5, 7) and approaches based on learning theory using both positive and negative reinforcement( 13, 15, 17). In many instances successful treatment has been largely absent or limited to isolated behavioral changes."

If you rewarded me with only the food I was meant to have a meal time, I think id be upset. And tbh, withholding the food they need for sustenance upon good behaviour then spanking and shouting them for acting out us severely messed up
A quote which reads: "Training was conducted 6 days a week, 7 hours a day, with a 15-minute rest period accompanying each hour of training. During the training sessions the child and the adult sat facing each other, their heads about 30 cm apart. The adult physically prevented the child from leaving the training situation by holding the child's legs between his own legs. Rewards, in the form of single spoonsful of the child's meal, were delivered immediately after correct responses. Punishment (spanking, shouting by the adult) was delivered for inattentive, self-destructive, and tantrumous behavior which interfered with the training, and most of these behaviors were thereby suppressed within 1 week. Incorrect vocal behavior was never punished."

A two part quote, with the first reading:"They did not initiate social contacts and became tantrumous when such contact was initiated by others." There is then a line seperating the second quote: "Symbolic rewards such as social approval were inoperative, so biological rewards such as food were substituted."

F*** that nice write-up I got in the Guardian. This is my all-time favourite review of one of my books.
"I am loving this book, I have genuinely laughed out loud when reading this book, which is a big achievement by the writer as I am mostly miserable."

Ah yes. Why continue your experiment when you just cant be arsed to actually be rigorous and do the boring work? Also the ethics claim doesnt really hold water when youre perfectly happy to electrically shock children
Quotation that reads: ""The E considered it unnecessary to repeat the extinction operations for
the bar-press in lieu of the similarity of these data to Study 1. A further
consideration for termination of the study at this time was based on
protecting S from additional self-inflicted injury."

The S here is a subject who is 9 years old. I think if a random stranger told me at 9 that they loved me I may have ran away screaming for the hills...or decked them. Honestly maybe my friend has a point that these scientists were all creeps.
Quotation which reads: "When S did press the bar, E would look up at S, smile, and provide 5 seconds of “pleasant talk”: “That’s a good girl; I love you very much; you are a sweetheart”; etc."
