Invasion from Beyond (aka B-Movie) (PS1) (1998) 5/5
Following the river of lava over two towers with spinning blue circles as they lead to a giant blue pyramid, defended by dozens of UFOs of different shapes and sizes. You manage to defeat the aliens as the cutscene shifts to the blue metallic pyramid, with beams of light protruding from the cracks in its structure. The pyramid starts exploding as tremors start to shake the planet, opening new cracks and unleashing geysers of hot flames from the bowels of the earth. The camera zooms out to show the entire planet starts to shake and it explodes in neatly cut quarters like a cut up watermelon, revealing the hot lava inside as a blue shockwave swoops the darkness of space.

Invasion from Beyond (aka B-Movie) (PS1) (1998) 4/5
An escort mission of following a cop car with a cartoonishly large megaphone, driving through suburban streets proclaiming "Aliens invading! Don't panic!"

A blonde lady in a blue dress can be seen in front of her house, yelling and panicking.Flying the pitch black Schwarzkopf fighter jet with a sci-fi red engine exhaust on the back, doing a tight right turn over a jungle near some Mayan ruins and a large ziggurat rising under the poisonous green skies. One of the unlockable ships is an actual old timey UFO called the Frizz-B, currently flying over an alien installation with a central hologram of a rising spire. The homeworld of the Martians, which I'm assuming is Mars but maybe they're from a planet called Martia, I don't know!

A yellowish desert with a river of lava and large metallic arches going over it with a green dome protruding from the ground on the left, complementing the pinkish-purple skies.

Successfully finishing or embarrassingly failing a mission shows a shifting cinematic camera of your ship as well as a cockpit front camera view of your pilot, a cool short haired lady with a earpiece and mic called Dominique Dallas from Houston, Texas, looking left and right as she turns with the message "MISSION FAILED" displayed over her head.

Look, I was taking screenshots, and it's very easy to fail in this game with so many short timers, escort and defense missions. 👀I couldn't find the names of the other characters so I'm just gonna call this guy Potato Sack Head, because his head is shaped like a potato sack grumpy neckbeard guy with puffy cheeks, bad moustache, metallic cyber headphones and a green cap.Another cool lady, a redhead with a serious look on her face, wearing a black uniform with red stars, possibly Russian coded and also failed the mission. The ship select screen during a mission (you choose a squad of three ships serving as three lives), with the Bulldog fighter jet with black and white checkers and stripes selected and the 3D head portrait of its pilot, a grizzled war veteran with a dingy helmet, chomping on a cigar as he's squinting with one eye and his other eye being wide open, looking like he's seen some things.

Even though the game is a heavily fast paced arcade shooter, a lot of the missions require you to beam up objects or civilians, drawn and animated in an adorable pixel art style, carrying them in your limited cargo space (shown in the upper left corner of the screen, varies depending on the ship you choose), like these two folks running on the grass by a small white house near a steep cliff, panicking about all the hubbub.Dodging green alien lasers and apartment buildings as you try to mow down UFOs while not crashing into any of the numerous structures or send a few rockets into the wrong target.Flying over a small village under ominous green skies as you destroy one of the larger and more advanced UFOs, causing a big explosion and light streaks beaming from the blast in a spectacular display of effects and lens flare.A weirdly dim blue river with a solid color and no texture flows near a jungle area with volcanic mountains and a art skybox of a giant volcano erupting in the distance, creating Mordor on (non-middle) Earth.

Invasion from Beyond (aka B-Movie) (PS1) (1998) 1/5
The chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one. But still they come!

Aptly named B-Movie for the European release, this game puts you in the pilot seat of numerous advanced aircraft, defending Earth from a Martian invasion in an impressively large map action at sleek 60 fps and an aggressive LOD system where every little house and object has several levels of detail and textures, creating a very grungy but smooth look with some gorgeous low poly models and Amiga-era pixel art texture work in a sort of clumsy but breakneck fast arcade gameplay.

Here we have the aerodynamic Red Devil fighter ship doing a whoosh over a small rural town near Washington D.C. with lots of little adorable low-poly houses, a church and trees as the orange sunset skies bring forth a fleet of UFOs, several smaller and flatter ones and a larger bowl-shaped saucer with neon green udders. The awesome silver and red fighter jet called Tsunami, looking like something straight of out Raiden or another cool Japanese shmup, doing a tight right turn while flying over an urban area at night while Steed, whatever wingman dude or mission critical characters he might be (I wasn't paying attention) is saying "On my way to his home, cover me".

OK dude, I'm not gonna lie to your partner about your affair or whatever it is you're doing, I'm fighting Martians over here. The sleek silver Cobra ship with two large engine exhausts on the side, flying over the White House under the beautiful pink skies with the Washington Monument obelisk looking erect in the distance as black flying saucers start shooting blue laser fire at the building.

My hunch tells me I should just let them do their thing and not interfere. The outside hull of a giant mothership with many green domes, generators and trenches lit in orange lights as you fly the B-62 Mk. III, a WWII looking jet with lots of black and white stripes and checkered patterns on its wings and fins, doing a strafe run as its blue engine leaves a thin blue streak as it comes from the right, targeting some structures as a little green butt-naked alien with a big orange megaphone looking gun looks around.

Colony Wars: Red Sun (PS1) (2000) 5/5
Piloting one of the aforementioned Sha'har crescent fighters, approaching a giant tentacled monstrosity, looking like half-machine, half-creature called the titular Red Sun, a spaceship that turned out to have a more sinister purpose.Chasing the Red Sun towards a literal red sun, its warm glow filling the dark void of space with a beautiful reddish tint as your BSI 303 Hyper Zeroid flies towards the silhouette of a giant space squid. The tentacled Red Sun escaping through a wormhole as you're trying to chase after it, shooting your top and bottom green lasers.Stuck in subspace, it's now just you and the Red Sun, alone in the purple darkness as the tentacled monster shows three red lights on its underside (how rude) that must be its weak points, possibly due to being actual lights that are probably connected to a simple unsecured electrical system built for some red LED lights so it's always a good attack vector for structural weakness.

Chasing down one of the Pirate Interceptors, a hilariously early 20th century looking red triplane, making the Pirate designs super charming and funny.Flying the Ryusei towards the Morgan's Ghost, a large pirate station orbiting a red planet, its dark silhouette lit up from below by the descending sun.Flying very close to the Unisoft "Profit and Loss" spaceship, a white cruiser with some blue lines and details, its numerous defense turrets standing at the ready.Flying over the surface of Aurora 3, defending a refinery complex from an attack by Sha'har Fighters, black crescent-shaped ships raining down hell on the smog filled industrial area.

Colony Wars: Red Sun (PS1) (2000) 3/5
A training mission in deep space while flying the Snapdragon in third person, trying out your targeting systems while shooting at some space debris, a metallic panel just gently rotating in space.A mission on the surface of Optima Ferox, one of the aforementioned red planets, its thick brown atmosphere making it hard to see, but not that hard to notice the local lifeform looking like a giant crab with a big whale face, roaring to the poopy skies.Your mission on Optima Ferox leads you to The General, the man appearing in your dreams, just gently lying on the ground here in his white space suit, stretching his arms like a little baby while you're trying not to get him eaten by the giant whale-crabs.Flying the Zaibatsu Ryusei, an aerodynamic fighter craft with three blue engine exhausts and many fins, flying through the purple space and shooting at an Empiret Fighter.

Colony Wars: Red Sun (PS1) (2000) 2/5
Chasing the rebels on the surface of Dendray, doing a literal canyon run as you shoot down Rebel tanks while searching for the four Base Generators you're tasked to blow up.The red planet again, now obstructed by a Rebel Cruiser, a very angular and chunky white starship, possibly built by Tesla, with a wide rectangular blue engine exhaust and two very long wings.Another big ship, this time a Pirate Galleon, looking like a big red fish, its lower front windows looking like teeth, with some fins and side elements and engines with a logo of a white skull and crossbones.A mission intro cutscene showing a space station ring with a central skyscraper-like structure orbiting around another red planet with your ship and another vessel flying close to one another.

Honestly this game is gorgeous and often looks like it could've been a late 90s PC space sim when looked at with the upscaled high-res emulator settings.

Colony Wars: Red Sun (PS1) (2000) 1/5
You are Alexander Lyron Valdemar, a miner in the League worlds during the days of the second Colony Wars game, having strange dreams about a coming catastrophe and a mysterious General that guides your path, you decide to leave everything and go on a perilous journey across space, visiting various space stations and doing mercenary work while following the dreams through a tangled web of politics, war and alien threats.

Here we have Valdemar inside the cockpit of a Magentech CR8 Snapdragon (seems Android phones are still all the rage in the 47th century), a chunky hauler ship running a defense mission, escorting a couple of giant bipedal walker haulers, carrying huge red containers on their backs while escorted by a few chicken walkers and fighter jets, walking on a path through a frozen tundra under hazy blue skies.Flying dangerously close near a friendly Empiret (not a typo) Battlecruiser, a blue space hulk shaped like a whale with side engines and many vertical and horizontal fins, getting attacked by Rebels as it's leaving a red planet looming large in the distance.A third person view of the Harper-Jones H4E Magnum, aptly named for it's sci-fi gun shape with side and bottom wings, chasing after the Unisoft "Profit and Loss" freighter as it's trying to escape through a giant swirling wormhole, pursued by a alien Sha'har Cephalopod (the font on the thumbnail kinda makes it look like it says "cephalopoo"), a giant drill-like ship that opens its front section like a claw into 8 talons, reaching to grab the ship. One of the coolest looking ships in the game, the BSI 303 Hyper Zeroid, looking like three guns from Halo placed in a crown formation with blue exhausts in the back and additional bits and fins at the bottom, just a cool sci-fi design.

The cool ship is shooting a barrage of blue Mk. III lasers at a League Dreadnought, a Michaelangelo-from-the-Turtles-themed long spaceship, shooting down its side turrets one by one.

Driving on an inclined road with an awning peeking from above, pouring a beautiful blue waterfall on the side with pastel colored pinkish blue skies light up the world in a gentle sunset. The volcanic planet of Varkon, entering a tunnel that leads to a cavernous hall with a giant bust of a demon standing tall in the center, crossing his arms and showing off his ample abs, magnificently lit up by the river of lava on both sides of the road. The dark planet Drakar, driving through a canyon made of steel as you approach Draenek himself in his grey machine of death, shooting blue photon torpedoes at him as you both approach a giant logo of his evil empire, a melting Punisher skull over a triangle, one half with inverted colors/shapes.The game has a cheat code with a few hidden cars, enabling you to drive some of the enemy boss vehicles as well as the red demon Draenek himself, looking all cool while standing on a large hovering platform and driving past some burning pots, very much his vibe.

Red Asphalt (aka Rock & Roll Racing 2: Red Asphalt) (PS1) (1998) 1/3
Did you know Rock & Roll Racing had a sequel on the PS1? I sure didn't!

Still set on dangerous races across numerous planets, now with a darker tone where the alien invader Draenek has conquered Earth and countless other worlds, creating a racing tournament to the death with edgy vehicle names like Hellfalcon, Tormentor and Nightmare as well as six characters drawn in a very comic book, Simon Bisley style, hellbent on getting revenge while trying to survive the bloodsport including Handsome Jack Bloodwheel, Thula Crimstone and Motormouth.

The racing championship starts on Earth, specifically L.A., with Motormouth, the narrator of the intro pointing out that the city was already a hellhole before the wars and the alien invasion, and it sure as hell looks like it, with dark beige and brown metallic walls and the entrance to a tunnel with big yellow lights, two big ventilation fans, a skull emblem in the middle and the word SUCK painted in red paint (or blood, it's probably blood).

They probably call it Red Asphalt because they're insinuating that the red part is blood on the asphalt, and even the word RED in the game's logo is also smeared in blood, so that must be it. See, I catch on quickly! The race shifts to Tranzine, an oceanic planet that looks like it's been turned into one giant amusement park, the entrance greeting you with the big bulbous face of a chubby blonde man with blushing cheeks and a party hat, nothing unnerving about that image. The planet Drakar, the Arena of Death, a purple, metallic NASCAR-shaped track with thick arches and purple neon lights hanging under the dark cloudy skies as you are chasing after the demon-like Draenek himself.

Star Wars: Masters of Teräs Käsi (PS1) (1997) 1/2
In an uncharacteristic anime move on account of the Emperor, he introduces Arden Lyn, the master of the martial art of Teräs Käsi in a plan to fight the Rebel leaders to eliminate them once and for all in mortal kombat.

However, this scene in the misty swamps of Dagobah is just a lovers quarrel between Princess Leia wearing a brown outfit with boots and gloves, wielding a double sided yellow lightsaber, a couple of years before The Phantom Menace, as she's about to deflect Han Solo's blaster fire because he shot first.Chewbacca punches Luke Skywalker in the groin so hard, a yellow flash pops from his cockles as Luke flinches backwards in an almost 90 degree swing, embarrassing himself in front of pretty much the entirety of Cloud City.Thok the green pig-like Gamorrean warrior, raised on Pzob with his brother Gorc, the siblings famous for being able to burp a fireball after drinking Gamorrean hooch (hey don't ask me, it's all cannon), pulling out his axe to defend himself just as Hoar, real name KkH'Oar'Rrhr (he was teased a lot as a child), a force-sensitive Tusken Raider, deciding to instead flail his rifle around like a polearm. The misty night time on the forest moon of Endor, Boba Fett is lying on the metallic platform just as Darth Vader does a crouching dick stab with his red lightsaber right in Fett's bobas.

Miracle Space Race (PS1) (2003) 2/2
Did I mention that all the tracks look the same? Well they pretty much do, with what looks like a single group of textures made out of sci-fi panels, this time adding a few turrets on the top of the right wall in this left-turning bend, shooting green lasers at whatever while goat girl Flossie tries to avoid any bump in the level or racers that will significantly slow down her speed.Along with the same-looking levels, the game seemingly only has a single music track that plays in every level, making the feeling of déjà vu that much stronger, as Chloe the bear does a tight right turn next to a wall of red arrows illuminating the floor with its bright lights.Orange dragon Cadmus with two little white horns flying a pink hovercraft under some arches and even more metallic surfaces and sci-fi panels.A back view of the racers chasing you through a green tunnel, their lower LOD 3D models popping out with less and less details as they loose all textures and become faceless floating polygons in the distance.

Hyper 3D Taisen Battle Gebockers (Saturn) (1996) 1/2
Swindled by the promise of 3D in the title and the lack of any attention span, it turned out the game doesn't really have any 3D polygons, just the VDP2 rendered ground plane like this icy floor made out of frozen blocks and shallow water, with 2D sprites for pillars and the characters themselves, the aforementioned Gebockers.

This is a Virtual-On style arena 1v1 shooter between cute little rocket robots with boosters on their butts, floating Rayman hands (I'm on a roll with those lately) and round heads with googly eyes, with the current battle introducing Pal, a blue Gebocker (I'm just assuming the characters are called Gebockers since I don't know the lore, it's all in Japanese and very little can be found online) with a red V on his forehead like some kinda Gundam fella. He's currently fighting Fisher, an almost Minion looking robo with a big exhaust for a mouth and goggles (hence the Minions), rushing around like he's gonna gobble someone up.Dontin is a yellow rocket-shaped thing with short brown hair, googly eyes and a big red smoochy mouth (no visible here), throwing exploding walnuts at a purple monk robot with a cane called Mugen as they zoom around a weird and endless pink horizon with blobs, tendrils and spikes, all gooey and pink, while a pink mountain range with tall neuron-trees rise into the purple skies. An endless ocean with a small arena surrounded by flat orange buoys, enclosing a wavy area with some gray shells and rocks as the pink sexy robot Ray is all electrified, shooting green photon torpedoes at Ein, a gray robot in a sort of floating chair with two guns in front, looking surprised with his googly eyes, either because he's witnessing the endless watery horizon under the orange and purple aurora skies or he just realized he's a floating sentient robot built to kill. Either way, lots to ponder on.Rocketbot Kid, a cowboy with a big hat and a sheriff badge, rootin', tootin' and shootin' his akimbo guns across the desert sands past some yellow rocks as the feline looking Catty, with her big eyes, green hair and cat ears, doing a swooshing side dodge and leaving a trail of semi-transparent Cattys in her wake.

We got Cress here with big polygonal (and untextured, like most of the game) hair, a cool white and blue outfit with a three-pronged flux capacitor on his back as well as floating hands and feet, showing what it would be like if Rayman was originally designed in Japan. Cress is standing on a lily pad on a small lake with very crunchy and pixelated textures, hopping like a lil' froggy man.Our heroine, Lay with blonde hair and equally floating hands and legs, climbing a cool textureless low-poly tree by jumping on its branches, positioned around the tree trunk like a spiral staircase with most of the stairs missing.Cress jumping around an orangey Doritos desert while avoiding a bunch of brown scorpions, big-butt spiders with a zig-zag yellow and black pattern and stone heads with evil eyes and a hexagonal third eye that shoots stuff.Lay running on a wiggly pink path over a fantastical abstract space of very low resolution blue textures and floating white platforms as she arrives in front of a fluffy white pudding creature with little legs, cat ears and a long tail with two rectangular eyes, joined by a green fishy creature with a wide orange mouth and sensual lips.

Alien Trilogy (PS1) (1996) 1/5
An alternate storyline loosely based on the plot and locations of the Alien movies, you play as Marine Lieutenant Ellen Ripley, investigating a colony on LV-426 where her team gets wiped out so only her and Bishop survive the attack, with the synthetic sort sending her mission briefings while Ripley gets to mow down hordes of xenomorphs (as lovely pre-rendered 2D sprites), like this guy here standing in the middle of a platform in a dark, industrial area full of pipes and girders and metallic paneling, like most of the game's environments.Turns out that the Weyland-Yutani corporation doesn't like you messing around with their aliens so they send out their troopers in green security guard outfits and short military haircuts, standing in a corridor with slanted, orange panels on the walls and neon lights as Ripley uses her M41A Pulse Rifle to blow the head off one of them in a brutal splash of blood. After clearing out the colony, Ripley visits a prison facility inspired by Alien³, with a dark furnace chamber illuminated by an ominous red glow coming from the hot fumes bursting from the grating on the floor and burning up a xenomorph while you help out the process of combustion by adding some lead. (that's how it works, right?)The prison canteen area covered in 70s sci-fi beige walls and floor paneling, with a large kitchen table with cupboards, some monitors and a work desk on the left wall while a kind of orangey Runner aka Dog alien just kinda strolls about on all fours.

Frogger's back in full 3D and he's learned some new moves like a croak, a big hop and how to properly use his tongue (it's important).

The game also has a slightly more dynamic camera when the need arises, as well as the ability to rotate the view by 90 degrees (blasphemous). It starts with the classic level, hopping across the busy highway, dodging cars and trucks and arriving at a river with groups of turtles that sneakily sink into the water just to mess with you, as well as lots of tree trunks, creating temporary moving platforms between you and your colorful froggy friends that explode in a hundred little triangles when you hop on them to "rescue" them, but we all know Frogger is really an immortal frog from the clan McFrog, and ultimately there can be only one!Frog guy shown here hopping over some metallic plates forming a bridge over a lava pit with flaming rocks flying over the platform.Turns out Frogger is surprisingly light, being able to hop on clouds, the road and houses visible below. That's why he's able to hop on clouds... he's in frog heaven.A zoomed out hacked camera of Big Boulder Alley, a sandy canyon level that mostly consists of a serpentine path going up a cliff while low-poly boulders keep rolling down like some kinda Jump Man level, though this here is a Jump Frog.

Contra: Legacy of War (PS1) (1996) 4/4
The game also offers four playable characters, with Tasha here, an intergalactic mercenary made of chromed metal, wearing a red top and brown shorts, wielding a green gun as she stands in front of a large green wall with turrets and a red blinking glass eye in a very Contra fashion.

I've used a hacked cam here to bring the camera to the back of the characters, making it look like a more modern third person shooter (albeit with a very pixelated 2D character), showing a different perspective of what the game might look like.A sepia brownish cobblestone paved street with the two other selectable characters, the shiny purple robot CD-288, the hulking Robocop-Samus hybrid with a gun for a hand, and the more humanoid gray xenomorph guy called Bubba, while a couple of enemy soldiers approach from the other end of the street. As you defeat the evil guy, you are pulled into the dark virtual reality slash mind of Colonel Bassad, his creepy green face wobbling in the background of a pitch-black void as you walk on a digital grid, often forming letters and words before a boss fight like this cyberspace spider-bot with a turret on top. The words spell out the unsettling message "COME WITH ME TO HE HELL DAMNED". Hardcore dude!

I shouldn't forget to mention that this game was developed by Novotrade (later called Appaloosa Interactive like at the time of developing this game). They're of course the Hungarian dev team most well known for making the Ecco the Dolphin games as well as a number of C64, Amiga and SEGA Genesis games, so the home computer and demoscene roots, as well as the Genesis vibes are extremely visible here in some of the character pixel art and texture work.

Be sure to check out Moleman 4: Longplay, a documentary talking about the Hungarian scene in the 80s and the developers and games that came out of that highly-technical and talented pool of programmers and artists (and also just check out the entire Moleman series of documentaries, good stuff!)Finally, Ray arrives at the small brown planet full of red wormy veins on its fleshy brown surface, jumping around in low gravity as he shoots down a bunch of snakey plant monsters and fly traps, hopefully defeating the alien menace once and for all. As a tank, you also have the power to shoot (I know, controversial) as the maze has a few barricades you can destroy as well as enemy tanks that you can shoot. The second game is straight up Gyruss, flying through a starfield, rotating your spaceship on the edges of the screen as formations of bug-like enemies fly in.A funny moment ensues when you exit the arcade hut as a squad of enemies have just been waiting outside to ambush you, while honestly being very polite to let you play a few games and then try to kill you, which is nice.

Ray doesn't think that's nice and starts shooting at them.

Mr. Slate, Fred's boss is breaking his stones again (giggidy), telling him that he has to finish digging a trench by tomorrow morning or he's fired, while Barney rolls along and tells Fred they have to practice for the bowling tournament.

Fred wishes that he could somehow work and bowl at the same time and a tiny floating green alien guy with a big helmet pops in, called the Great Gazoo, snaps his fingers and creates numerous trenches and canyons, populating them with gems and bowling pins, and gives Fred a hollowed out half-bowl to sit in as he slides down the levels, hitting sparsely placed bowling pins and other obstacles in something that has almost nothing to do with bowling.

Here we have Fred sliding down the neck of a big orange dinosaur as he approaches the finish flag.Fred and Barney, as the irresponsible fathers that they are, let their infant children take a roll down the dangerous trenches, with Pebbles here goo-gooing and ga-gaaing to the right towards a big purple flower and past a small pond with a geyser and a cute pink elephant that's just having a nice shower.Barney rolls into the boney mouth of a giant dinosaur skeleton with its spine and ribs visible yonder.Bamm-Bamm sliding through the Crystal Caves and into a dimly lit chamber with several small pockets of glowing green goo, creating an eerie atmosphere while bowling pins and purple crystals float all willy nilly around the level.

Dinomaster Party (PS1) (2002)
A colorful little party game with cute baby dinosaurs and a horrifying story about the extinction of the dinosaurs, with only a few eggs surviving so the baby dinos need to fight in a series of mini-games to determine who will be the new top honcho (well, I say "series", but there's only four, so technically I'm correct, and that's the best kind of correct), all happening on a 7 by 7 square grid.

Here we have Dinosquare, with the goal to connect one side of the board to the other, whether creating a straight line or a larger area, and get some points. The 2D drawn character portraits fit the 3D models pretty well with the baby T-Rex having a smug smile with a squinting side eye.The Meteor Shower mini-game is set on a backdrop of a purple volcano with three caves occupying a square on the board, so the catch is to hide inside one of the caves while a hot meteor falls down and kills the one cute baby dino that didn't manage to hide in time.

This is a game for little children. Some rocky canyons with little patches of grass are the stage of Rockpush, another mini-game where round yellow rocks fall onto the board and you can kick them around to hit your opponents, knocking them off, for here can be only one!The Free for All stage inside a cave filled with yellow hot lava, and as the name suggests, you just punch each other and push the little baby dinosaurs into the scorching hell pit, saving them the pain of living in this doomed world where their species are pretty much extinct already, letting them fade away into myth and legend.

You can also jump to pick up some apples and pieces of meat to regain your health!
