Mario Kart 64 (N64) (1997) 1/3
Princess Peach spending 1% of her generational wealth into turning her entire world into various race tracks is exactly the kind of issue Mushroom Kingdom has to deal with on a daily basis.

Peach invites her friends and keeping her enemies closer to a racetravaganza and the winner might even get a kiss on the cheek (except Mario... fuck that guy).

Speaking of that guy, Mario sits at the comfortable 8th place as all the racers wait at the start line to begin the race through the Luigi Raceway, a lovely grassy area with trees and puffy white clouds in the bright blue skies, adding salt to injury that his brother's racetrack is the first in the game.Speaking of the enviously green Luigi, him and his friends DK and Yoshi are breaking all traffic regulations as they do a tight left turn on Toad's Turnpike past some cars and trucks.Princess Peach being a bit of a shit racer as she's struggling in 4th place, driving over a long suspended wooden bridge next to a waterfall in D.K.'s Jungle Parkway, going into a cave as the aforementioned Donkey Kong flashes in all the rainbow colors and is about to bump Peach off the bridge.

Welp, there goes all the funding for the championship. The wintery nights of the Frappe Snowland are covering all the racers in a gentle snowfall as they do a right turn through some curvy roads, approaching a giant snowy statue of Yoshi in the distance, a monument to his cold, dead heart and the numerous sacrifices he mlemmed with his long, sensual tongue.

Extreme Go-Kart Racing (PS1) (2003) 1/2
Also known as Kart Race Kimete wa Drift! and WaiWai Kart for its PS3/PSP re-release, this one's a pretty budget-feelin' kart racer with pre-rendered 2D characters on 3D race tracks, like our hero Joe in his silver go-kart, wearing an orange helmet with a red stripe, racing through a nice race track surrounded by grass mowed in brighter and darker stripes, just about the pass the checkpoint near the crowd stands and yonder towards a jumbotron display showing the race, glistening under the SEGA-blue skies and puffy clouds made out of foam balls.Eri is a little blonde girl in a red winter coat and hoodie, kinda looking like Kenny from South Park seen from the back, riding on a basket with wheels and joined by her trusty pal penguin Tobi.

They're racing through a cold, snowy racetrack with a big drowsy polar bear sitting on a raised frozen platform with some of his penguin friends, all pre-rendered in a very cute style. The pirate captain called Captain, wearing a red captain suit and hat befitting a pirate captain called Captain, riding a powder cannon with three small boosters in the back and driving on a series of grassy islands with palm trees, aiming towards a wooden bridge and a pirate ship shooting cannon balls at this cannon riding captain Captain.Gigi the bushy-haired caveman riding a chunk of meat with the bone protruding from the back, and four wheels stuck on it with smaller bones, with a missed opportunity to call his vehicle the Bonermobile, driving on the underwater sea bed as he approaches a Japanese looking castle surrounded by red walls.

The Flintstones: Bedrock Bowling 1/4
Mr. Slate, Fred's boss is breaking his stones again (giggidy), telling him that he has to finish digging a trench by tomorrow morning or he's fired, while Barney rolls along and tells Fred they have to practice for the bowling tournament.

Fred wishes that he could somehow work and bowl at the same time and a tiny floating green alien guy with a big helmet pops in, called the Great Gazoo, snaps his fingers and creates numerous trenches and canyons, populating them with gems and bowling pins, and gives Fred a hollowed out half-bowl to sit in as he slides down the levels, hitting sparsely placed bowling pins and other obstacles in something that has almost nothing to do with bowling.

Here we have Fred sliding down the neck of a big orange dinosaur as he approaches the finish flag.Fred and Barney, as the irresponsible fathers that they are, let their infant children take a roll down the dangerous trenches, with Pebbles here goo-gooing and ga-gaaing to the right towards a big purple flower and past a small pond with a geyser and a cute pink elephant that's just having a nice shower.Barney rolls into the boney mouth of a giant dinosaur skeleton with its spine and ribs visible yonder.Bamm-Bamm sliding through the Crystal Caves and into a dimly lit chamber with several small pockets of glowing green goo, creating an eerie atmosphere while bowling pins and purple crystals float all willy nilly around the level.

Dinomaster Party (PS1) (2002)
A colorful little party game with cute baby dinosaurs and a horrifying story about the extinction of the dinosaurs, with only a few eggs surviving so the baby dinos need to fight in a series of mini-games to determine who will be the new top honcho (well, I say "series", but there's only four, so technically I'm correct, and that's the best kind of correct), all happening on a 7 by 7 square grid.

Here we have Dinosquare, with the goal to connect one side of the board to the other, whether creating a straight line or a larger area, and get some points. The 2D drawn character portraits fit the 3D models pretty well with the baby T-Rex having a smug smile with a squinting side eye.The Meteor Shower mini-game is set on a backdrop of a purple volcano with three caves occupying a square on the board, so the catch is to hide inside one of the caves while a hot meteor falls down and kills the one cute baby dino that didn't manage to hide in time.

This is a game for little children. Some rocky canyons with little patches of grass are the stage of Rockpush, another mini-game where round yellow rocks fall onto the board and you can kick them around to hit your opponents, knocking them off, for here can be only one!The Free for All stage inside a cave filled with yellow hot lava, and as the name suggests, you just punch each other and push the little baby dinosaurs into the scorching hell pit, saving them the pain of living in this doomed world where their species are pretty much extinct already, letting them fade away into myth and legend.

You can also jump to pick up some apples and pieces of meat to regain your health!

Crypt Killer (PS1) (1997) 1/7
A fabulous arcade light gun shooter that takes you on adventures all around the world in search for the "Eyes of Guidance", blue and red eye-shaped jewels that hold the secret of an ancient civilization and more importantly, their untold riches that you could plunder as a "crypt raider", legally distinct from raiders of other types.

You can choose which of the six areas you start with first and choose you way through several branching paths, leading to a guardian holding one of the jewels.

Might as well start at the first level, a dense forest under the sunset skies and very low draw distance as two blue gargoyles descend from the sky while you swiftly dispose of the one on the left, blowing it up into bloody pieces with your shotgun.A sunken dungeon glistening under the clean blue water as green scaly creatures swim around, throwing daggers at you.A dark crypt (one of many) filled with piles of skulls next to some mine shaft entrances with many living skeletons coming out and throwing their boners at you.An ancient Egyptian tomb with a wall of sarcophagi lined up, opening up to reveal the mummies inside, throwing pieces of cloth at you with one of them looking like it's resting on the mummy's shoulder, like it's just coming out of the shower.

It turns out these are clown sarcophagi, containing multitudes of mummies, and they JUST. KEEP. COMING. OUT!

Blockids (PS1) (1996)
A simple Breakout clone with colorful (and might I say, nicely animated) characters, the addition of various camera angles to show off that 3D magic and the ability to make the ball jump whenever you want, creating some depth to the ways you approach the destruction of the colorful stacked blocks.

The board is made out of gray tiles with a ornate border with golden squiggly vines and creepy eyes. The blocks themselves also have similar eye shapes, making the whole thing a little creepy, though the pre-rendered Bryce-style backgrounds with generated terrain and blue skies make the game feel more new age and Y2K.

Here we have a lovely redhead mermaid just sitting and looking kinda confused at her opponent, a floaty, Boo-like ghost with a black witch's hat, looking startled, his body getting all fuzzy and spiky and his eyes and mouth becoming just creepy void holes as the pink ball bounces off the walls while the camera is untraditionally very low and following said ball in a more dynamic view of the game.A wizard elf with green hair, long pointy ears, a blue hat with a metallic Naruto plate, a blue coat and big cartoony clown shoes holds a wizard's cane and smiling at our boy ghost witch as he's squishing his head on the floor while little cherubs float around his head.

The camera shows the game board from almost directly above, showing off the towering stacks of blocks covered in the same creepy eye texture in various bright colors.A clockwork sphinx fights our boy ghost guy (he's the first opponent in the game so it's hard to get to other characters without playing through dozens and dozens of levels) on the default, kinda pinball-style view of the board, having a decent view of the stacked blocks arranged into a pyramid, to make the robo-sphinx feel more at home.A cute girl with black hair, big middle split bangs and a braid with a red bow on the end, wearing a long red shirt and sandals, smiling at a cute red dragon raising his head to growl and blow some fire.

This is a boss fight level (and all the boss fights look the same so you'll be seeing this a lot) where the board turns into a hellish goo of lava or tomato sauce with a glowing fiery pentagram in the upper center where an adorable pink low-poly dragon with no textures, just vertex colors is rotating in the center of the pentagram and growling while little 3D ghost guys float around him, forming a shield so there's no blocks, just ghosts and the dragon that you have to hit with your ball.

Assault: Retribution (PS1) (1998) 1/6
A giant foreign object crash lands near the city of Arcadia, wrecking havoc and unleashing a deluge of alien mutants on the city, so an elite team of heavy weapons experts are sent to clean up the mess and find a way to eradicate the aliens.

Enter Sgt. Reno J. Washington, a goatee-sporting, bandana-wearing military man, wearing a pitch-black body suit covered in gray armor, standing on the top of a skyscraper with the cyberpunk city full of neon lights and and signs like "Joe's "Chamber" Karaoke". Reno is holding a big pulse rifle and three floating option helper orbs, unleashing a barrage of blue bullets at a giant alien creature with a green skin, vaguely spider-like body and a big head with a shaggy mohawk and a big pink gash (oh my!) for a face. The second playable character is Major Kelly Doyle, a redhead soldier in a silver and pink armor, with additional boob covers with cyber-nipples for extra defense. She's standing in front of a giant green flower-like creature with red splotches, shooting at its center with a bolt rifle.Sgt. Reno in spaaaace! He's holding onto a sci-fi gondola with one hand, hanging from some sci-fi rails and shooting an electric tri-bolt into some highly expensive equipment and machinery, just to clear the way forward.A change of pace with a hoverbike chase sequence as Kelly flies inside a very long underground tunnel with giant blue cyber-barrels and pink beams of electricity shooting from the ground to the ceiling.

Skeleton Warriors (PS1) (1996) 1/5
The eternal struggle on planet Luminaire where Baron Dark has stolen one half of the Lightstar Crystal, the thingamajig of immense energy that powers the city of Liminicity city (it's a city).

One half of the crystal turns Baron Dark into an undead skeleton and gives him the power to turn anyone with evil hearts into skeletons as well, creating his own boner posse to fight the Legion of Light, led by prince Justin Lightstar and his friends, possessing the other half of the crystal and giving them the powers of hadouken, flight and also turning into a skeleton from time to time.

Here we have the black haired Prince Lightstar in his shiny blueish armor, purple cape and muscular bare arms, raising his sword to the heavens and vowing justice at the talons of a scrawny vulture, standing on the slopes of a cold mountain top, with the cold, mountain filled horizon is lit up by the chilly sun. Most of the graphics are made with 2D sprites of pre-rendered 3D models except from the floor and some of the surrounding platforms, so it's got a bit of that Donkey Kong Country and Killer Instinct vibe going for it.An open cave that looks like the insides of the maw of a great dragon with sharp teeth over the red background. Prince Lightstar doing a crouching attack with his two-bladed, kinda V-shaped sword, shooting blue energy balls at Dagger, the Baron's loyal skeleton servant, wearing a golden helmet with a ruby crystal on top and really missing some top branding deals by wielding and throwing an axe instead of, you know, an actual dagger.A dark temple with many interwoven stone bridges, lit by a dim green light and filled with skeleton boxers (yeah you heard me), wearing tattered blue shorts and shiny red boxing gloves, currently being exploded into dozens of bones, ribcages and bits, kind of hovering around until they reassemble or you manage to get the blue crystals they drop in time to fully kill them.
There's also a skellyman in the distance, standing on the precipice of an overarching bridge, occasionally throwing bombs at you as well as doing adorable jumping splits with his legs (not shown here). The now darkened Luminicity, the skies covered in a closeup photo of Jupiter with a purple tint as Lightstar jumps from building to building and encountering a skeleton with a mounted machinegun, shooting little fiery pellets all willy nilly.

The Chessmaster 3-D (PS1) (1996) 1/2
Welcome to an extremely clunky game of chess, admittedly, shown in true 3D.

Not only does the game show the board and all of the pieces in 3D, it also has a flat painting of The Chessmaster, an old wizard with gray hair and beard adorned by a blue cloak, the painting being a reproduction of the man on the photo of the original Chessmaster 2000 box cover, played by actor Will Hare, most notably known as "Grandpa" in Silent Night, Deadly Night as well as "Pa Peabody", the old pop from the family that finds Marty McFly crashed in their barn in Back to the Future.

There's also a floating question and exclamation mark for additional options, a chess clock timer as well as a fully 3D floating PS1 controller, some blue abstract shapes for the different styles of chess pieces as well as stone sculptures of various characters you can play with.

The screen so chock full of 3D objects just floating in the abstract blue gradient background that the 3D graphics update at a lower framerate, because someone decided to show 3D abstractions of all the options for whatever reason. Even the option to rotate the camera has two sub-options, to move it slowly with all the pieces visible, or to move it fast without the pieces visible, hence improving the framerate.

As someone that's pretty bad at chess, I just used my floating 2D hand cursor that's holding a magnifying glass I think and moved things around. One of the styles is a baffling representation of the pieces as a letter, so all of the pieces are like P for pawn, K for king and N for kNight, shown as elongated tall pink (or green) letters that obscure each other pretty damn well so you can't even tell what the letter is half the time.

The opposing player painting now shows a slightly smiling and squinting man with big glasses over a white background with red paint sprayed over it.A redhead woman with her long hair flowing to one side is now playing against you with the Deco set of pieces, stylish silver figurines with sharp edges that are all pretty similar looking, so another point for clarity and easy of use for Chessmaster 3-D!A smug brown haired young man with the face you'd love to punch is now playing against you with the Celestial set of chess pieces, consisting of Earth globes for the pawns and stars, planets, crescent moons and shooting stars for the rest of the figurines. At least the shapes are very distinct from one another so they're easily discernible although I've no idea which is which.

Solatorobo: Red the Hunter (NDS) (2011) 1/10 You've probably noticed that I love the look of this gorgeous game, though I haven't even touched upon all the cool ingame cutscenes and boss fights since that would take me like a week to capture, so here's lots of colorful locales, hope you enjoy! 🙌
A beautiful grand adventure and a spiritual successor to Tail Concerto, set in the Shepherd Republic, made out of multiple sky islands scattered around a large area, populated by anthropomorphic dogs and cats, called Caninu and Felineko respectively, talking French and having adorable names like Chocolat Gelato.

We follow the exploits of Red Savarin, a Hunter, doing odd jobs and quests, accompanied by the aforementioned Chocolat Gelato, his adoptive sister as they fly the airship Asmodeus, going on a mission to get some stolen documents and get thrust into an epic adventure.

Here we have Red piloting his trusty Dahak mech, a bipedal robot with long dangly arms like the Robot Troopers from Laputa: Castle in the Sky with an open seat so the pilot is fully visible and exposed, like here with Red running around the white sky docks of Airedale, a beautiful sky island full of small houses built upon a central hill, full of trees, floating ships and birds flying over.

It would be an understatement to call this game gorgeous, it's one of the most beautiful games on the Nintendo DS system, with a beautiful anime opening by studio Madhouse and designs, visuals and story worthy of the best PS1 RPGs, it's just a joyful experience with lots of colorful characters and an epic story, so give it a shot if you haven't played it!The fungal forest of Vizsla, a sky island covered in "fungi dandelions", large yellow shrooms as a curvy wooden bridge leads Red to a giant Ladyshroom, a friendly red ladybug creature.Deep orange skies glowing over the mishmash of metal parts and flimsy stairs on the floating island of Basset, made out of wrecked airships and other machines, with birds flying under the tall metal pillars barely holding the walkways together. The capital city of Pharaoh, one of those typical quaint cities that show what Japanese people think the entirety of Europe looks like, with clock towers, train stations and residential buildings rising around a long cobblestone path with staircases leading downward, populated by lots of puppydog people, all curiously 2D drawn in wonderful pixel art fashion while Red in his mech is fully 3D.

Vs. (PS1) (1997) 1/4
A peculiar case of a localization gone to the extreme, taking Polygon Magic's Fighters' Impact and reworking it for the US market with a complete redesign with all new cast of characters and a licensed punk rock soundtrack that feels like it fits more in the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series.

A clash between four gangs designated after their locales, including Beach, Streets, Campus and Hood, with sixteen characters and four boss fighters.

Here we have the suave pimp Slim Daddy (his occupation is "business man"), wearing a purple suit and hat, white pants with black tiger stripes and smoking a cigarette as he throws a slap on the disco stage at exchange student Harold, a blonde ninja guy with a bandana across his eyes, currently being electrocuted from the mighty pimp slap. Two exceptional fighters battle it out on the campus stadium, with principal O'Doul, a short balding man with fluffy white Einstein hair, red glasses and big moustache, wearing a blue shirt, yellow vest with an obnoxious Nickelodeon cartoon style tie and white pants with a red thin lined square pattern. His belly does a little growl with a little blue shine coming out of it as pro wrestler and taxi driver Oleg does a flaming high kick while wearing a yellow jacked with a black and white checkerboard pattern on his biceps as well as half his face being painted with the same pattern, taking his job very seriously.Leath in her pink cheerleader outfit doing an impressive high kick as she launches rapper Ramos into the air with a yellow flash, illuminating his white shirt, red vest, shorts and cap with headphones over it, with none of his gear flying off his body like it's glued to his head.Paco the mechanic, a burly dude with a short mohawk and goatee, wearing a pink shirt with rolled up sleeves and khaki pants, currently bending over as blonde aikido master and regular schoolgirl Kathleen grabs his arm and makes him cry uncle.

Nanostray (NDS) (2005) 1/5
A beautiful vertical Shoot 'Em Up or STG if you will, starring an amnesiac pilot seeking answers on the programmed coordinates in his ship, the SHN-2K5, while mowing down hordes of spaceships, robots and creatures while visiting numerous planets in his journey.

Here we have our little silver ship with a big blue canopy, shooting blue beams at a huge big necked ship with three big thrusters on the back as they fly over a rushing jungle river surrounded by densely packed trees.Your ship shooting a long electric beam over the dusty canyons while flying above complex industrial structures with a factory-like building on the left and a ring-like structure on the right.Flying over a sunken metropolis with three crumbling buildings rising above the water, beautifully reflected on its surface with the puffy white clouds visible on the reflection as a squad of tri-claw red enemy ships buzz around, shooting blue photon torpedoes at you.A lava planet covered in beautiful and yummy looking tomato sauce goo as three pillars of scorching hot flames erupt from the surface, forcing you to maneuver around them as tightly as possible.

All Star Watersports (PS1) (2003) 1/3
The biggest Hollywood stars splash with gallons of piss as they take a wrong turn on their way to the Oscars... *checks notes* oh wait, wrong game...

We have another banger from Dutch budget games publisher Phoenix Games, developed by team TheyerGFX from Australia (with a wonderful Comic Sans company logo), boasting "the most realistic waves yet seen on PlayStation" in their ad blurb, riding the waves through four sports including surfing, jet skiing, windsurfing and bodyboarding.

Here we have Crystal, a blonde surfer wearing a black and yellow top and shorts, riding a white surfboard and about to get on a large wave coming from the left.Bear, a handsome guy with short black hair in blue shorts, wearing a safety vest as he rides a larger sit down jet ski, looking up at the large wave towering from his left, doing an "oh shit wtf it's a wave" look as he pushed that pedal to the metal.Another hot bod dude by the name of Chook, sporting red shorts and expertly leaning as he rides the windsurfing board as he holds onto the sail, creating a splashy trail of bubbly water behind him, with the sandy beach peeking from the left as well as a tiny seagull, but that just might be a normal sized seagull that's very far away.Crystal paddling on her bodyboard as the huge wave lifts her up, turning her 90 degrees sideways while she's still just paddlin'.

Q*bert (PS1) (1999) 1/4
Q*bert is back in a new adventure in brand spankin' 3D! The orange evolutionary ancestor to Birdo, Q*bert goes on a quest to save his friends and his girlfriend Q*dina, taken by the sneaky Coily the snake, going through different themed worlds and mostly doing the same cube-coloring shtick he's known for, with the first world mostly consisting of abstract shapes and whirligigs behind some blue and purple blocks, teleport discs and powerups to pick up.Beyond that, Q*bert goes to many worlds like this vaguely racist, jungle themed area with stone blocks, statues and hopping guys with red masks, taking the orange sucker by surprise.A frozen version of the classic arcade Q*bert level with a sort of a pyramid formation of cubes but one of its sides is an icy steep slope that makes you slide down to the bottom if you're not careful.A lush and beautiful world full of ferns, colorful flowers and grassy blocks, with a central ornate cage with Q*dina trapped inside as Q*bert looks up at her and one of Coily's twirly purple snakes jumping around, guarding the prisoner.

Wetrix (N64) (1998) 1/2
A cool isometric puzzle game with a small checkerboard pattern playing field and abstract gradients and clouds flowing in the background, as various shapes made out of red and green arrows slowly fall down (called uppers and downers, don't do drugs kids), raising and lowering the 3D terrain respectively. As you raise the terrain in various lines, T-shapes and rectangles, a group of water droplets will begin to fall instead of the shapes, filling the empty space with water, flowing, splashing and draining off the board if you didn't board it up well with raised terrain.

Every isolated area with water is called a "lake" and you get points for the number of lakes you have, as well as how large and deep they are, as the terrain accumulates in height.

If you manage to make a lake that's two levels deep (no matter the size), a yellow rubber ducky will show up in it and start quacking, increasing your points multipliers. The game gives you a constant push and pull with rearranging the terrain, filling it up with water while trying to spill it off the board as little as possible, and from time to time you'll get a fireball that, upon contact with the water, will evaporate in a dense smoke, relieve some of the stress of water dripping everywhere and give you extra points. If you manage to accumulate a large amount of water on the level, a rainbow swooshes across the terrain, giving you even more points and also makes it look fabulous.

Ridge Racer 64 (N64) (2000) 1/4
A Ridge Racer on the N64? It's true! Introducing a different audience to the charms and speeds of the beloved series, it contains previous tracks as well as some new ones, arranged in three different environments, an urban city area, a scenic map in the "northwest" and a desert in the "southwest", with a large assortment of unlockable cars and a few goofy secret "vehicles".

Here we have the turquoise RT Xevious Green (it's turquoise, alright?) with a stylish orange text on the back spelling out "SKYBOY", racing past the crowd rafters full of colorful squished M&Ms representing the crowd, lots of banners for Namco and Nintendo and a cool little helicopter flying over the road as the racers drive off into the busy urban area. The ketchup and mustard colored Pac Racing Club car with a Pac-Man and the number 76 painted on the side, doing a sick drift into a long stretch of road going past a lovely beach with a few leaning palm trees and a hotel resort on the right. The gray RT Solvalou painted with blue and white strips, named after the legendary ship from Xevious, entering a quaint desert town with a triangular blue sign on the left saying "Poly's Motel", a water tower with the letters "SKP" written on it and some other shops on the right like "The Beehive Hair Salon" and the "Cactus Cafe".The RT Pink Mappy, as the name says, a wonderfully pink car driving inside a long gray tunnel covered in small lights on the ceiling as a few cars slide in from the left, leaving cool red Akira light trails from their break lights.

Alfred Chicken (PS1) (2002) 1/4
From the Game Boy, Amiga, NES and SNES comes a hero like no other, a clucky crusader on a quest to save his girlfriend Floella from the clutches of the evil MekaChicken, now in 3D (but not really), it's Alfred Chicken!

Alfred is a weird little red chicken rooster guy with a tiny body, a very big head with beady eyes, hair that looks like one half of the flag of Canada and a big yellow beak used for pecking. He finds himself in a very cheesy world, made out of cheese and crackers as he collects big blue diamonds, releases wide blue balloons with little beady eyes on them or just stands there looking at this cute little windup mouse toy in front of him.Alfred can also do a dive attack, closing his eyes in confident serenity as he rushed down on a blue egg for a 1UP, dashing through this abstract world of wooden beams and floating beehives.A big melon-headed fellow in a green shirt and pants standing on the pages of an opened book, looking up at the giant beanstalk rising from it as Alfred jumps on the big leaves, meeting some chill snails along the way.

I'd like to point out that the game retains the very Amiga-style choice of having gradient colors for the backgrounds, with a smooth green to blue gradient for this level, keeping that Amiga look very much alive on the PS1.Alfred finds a little television set on top of some books with one of them called "Madame Ovary", and as he jumps into the TV, he looks like he's standing behind a desk of a news report on Channel 6, and the more you pluck your beak and band your head, the more you release 3D words like "BLAH" as the crowd cheers, with the words becoming platforms you can jump on to get to higher ground.
The game doesn't have a lot going for it but this is a pretty funny gag!

A very stern looking cartoony man in a blue shirt, wearing a white safety helmet says "Now see how you do on your own!"Here we have the dump truck training (it's what I call doing squats), where you have to carefully drive a cool yellow truck full of dirt and try to spill as little of it as you go over ridges and bumps (with deformable terrain!) until you get to your goal. The bulldozer training puts you on a literal sandbox where you run over all the dirt and try to level it as much as possible, creating a nice flat surface on the entire building lot. You can press L1 to show a wireframe grid over any nearby patch of land that goes over the required level (red) or under it (blue) so you can flatten it up nicely.A special rough terrain crane training (that's a tongue twister), a long blue machine with a metallic gray telescopic boom and four outriggers, extendable horizontal beams that fixate the base to the ground for extended stability.

There's an oil drum on a start position and your goal is to hoist the load and carry it around a path marked as a gray area.

A little cartoony construction worker that looks like a bowling pin with two dots for eyes, a yellow construction helmet and Rayman-like floating hands and feet is gently waving his arms, pointing you at the oil drum you're supposed to pick up.

Warriors of Might and Magic (PS1) (2000) 1/5
After Crusaders of Might and Magic didn't quite meet the sales expectations, the developers shifted its sequel to a new protagonist and new ideas, making it its own thing with a new protagonist, the disgraced captain of the guard, Alleron, a handsome muscly man with long blonde hair, wrongfully accused for practicing necromancy and now stuck with the Mask of the Accused, a hellish living thing that sticks to its victim and sinks its claws into their neck, making Alleron look like a bare-chested heavy metal dude with a Batman mask.

He's thrown into the depths of the dungeons below the castle, giving him the chance to redeem himself if he manages to survive, though his chances are slim. Alleron finds a small buckler and a sword and sets off in his poppy brown pants to hack and slash his way through dungeons, caves and castles, fighting ruthless monsters like these little green bug-like creatures with brown shells (or perhaps wings) called Grubs, being sliced and diced by He-Man over here.Blue teleporter pads will sometimes transport Alleron to an ancient temple holding an artifact that gives him the power to cast spells, filled here with the Horrid, aptly named sea-monsters with sad faces and sharp teeth, walking around with their curvy hands with long blades on their ends, ideally shaped to play a game of Discs of TRON.Alleron, having found a hot black leather gimp suit to match his mask, runs across a rock bridge over a lava pit, leading to an altar with four pillars, white skulls embedded on top, two snakey guys and a red knight called the Warlord, the boss of this fiery pit.A boss fight with the Twice Born, a huge green undead skeleton warrior with a Viking helmet, some ragged armor, shield and axe, followed by two smaller copies of himself in a cathedral-like chamber while Alleron swings his magic sword to some small effect.

It's kinda interesting to note that the developers reused a couple of enemy models from their previous game, Crusaders of Might and Magic, like the twice born skeletons you encounter very early on in that game.

Aqua GT (PS1) (2001) 1/4
A worldwide speedboat championship with a few cool designs, famous city monuments and track variants with high and low tide as well as day and night versions.

An added "feature" of the PS1 version is that it runs at about 17 FPS, I didn't realize it was a port from a Dreamcast game so that might make some sense.

Here we have one of the four types of vehicles, the standard Monohull speedboat with a white and dark blue paintjob, driving on the river Thames and whooshing right past the Palace of Westminster and its Big Benjamin Ben.Splashing them waves on the Seine as a cool speedboat design called a Batwing Mono with a "Spider" design, a boat with curved wings on its sides, painted in garish blue and red decals with some yellow text, looking like a 90s paintball gun, trying to overcome a yellow and red speedboat as they drive past the Notre Dame cathedral.Another Batwing design, this time very aptly named because of its sharper edges and fully black paint job, doing a swerve next to a temple and some lovely trees as the sun shoots some lens flares over the bay area of Tokyo, Japan.A red and white catamaran style speedboat with two extra blades on the sides, approaching the nicely lit up Mid-Hudson Bridge at night with New York City's light shining in the distance.

Snowboard Kids 2 (N64) (1999) 1/6
The kids are back on board. Snowboard, that is! *ba dum tsss*

Racing down a red brick layered road next to some lovely houses in this winter wonderland full of snow covered trees, snowmen and kids in Santa outfits as famous 10 year old trick style snowboarder Jam Kuehnemund thinks about retiring after a long career in this extreme sport.
Wendy uses her new contraption, the shrinking ray to enshrinkify herself and her friends so they can snowboard around her room, like a Counter Strike "Rats" type map.

Here we have the adorable anthropomorphic brown dog man wearing a yellow shirt and dark red overalls called Mr. Dog (inu oyaji in Japan), the owner of the local store, sliding down next to a 90s beige PC, CRT monitor, keyboard and tower, with some icons and windows seen on the Windows 98 style desktop and a cute orange plush cat toy sitting atop the monitor.Coach, the smart blue penguin sensei with three strands of hair tied in a little orange tie, looking like he has a palm tree on top of his head, snow... or I guess mudboarding down a dirt road in a tropical paradise, surrounded by red and yellow flowers and palm trees, with the endless blue ocean stretching to infinity under the bright blue skies.Wendy Lane, the eccentric mad scientist, a tiny girl with brown hair tied in a ponytail, wearing a summery dress and thick giant eyeglasses, waterboarding... wait, no that sounds wrong, let's say snowboarding on water in the Crazy Jungle, avoiding purple crocodiles chomping with their mouths as she slides closer to a big Incan pyramid.

Ghost in the Shell (PS1) (1997) After like 1200 screenshots taken, I just couldn't narrow it down to any fewer than these shots because this game is beautiful and awesome and you should play it. 1/9
Seeing as the 2026 series The Ghost in the Shell season just concluded (I'm really dating this post), I thought it would be fitting to show off the awesome PS1 game that's just not talked about enough, because it's pretty dang awesome.

You're the Rookie, a new nameless, voiceless addition to the Public Security Section 9 team, joining them on a mission as the Human Liberation Front blows up a Megatech Body Corporation building, with a plot that brings them to many industrial zones, corpo factories, sewers and a very tall skyscraper.

The game's action is done while piloting your trusty red Fuchikoma, a spider-like tank with advanced AI and high maneuverability, armed with machineguns, tracking missiles and a screen-wiping grenade weapon.

One such gray industrial zone is just the place to start the story as you're buzzing around and encountering a smaller, white and also spider-like mech with far more angular edges, a big yellow "glass eye" and a missile launcher that's coincidentally just now firing a bunch of missiles at your spidery fat ass.The game also has chase missions where the gameplay turns a bit more on rails, using the Fuchikoma's ability for speedy movement to chase perps down highways or jumping on a speedy boat platform here, rushing over the sea full of construction platforms, rigs and tankers while speedboats and flying gray mechs with long wing-like boosters shoot at you.One very cool and advanced gameplay mechanic is that your spider-like Fuchikoma can naturally climb walls and ceilings, preceding the Alien vs. Predator game by a couple of years, shown here in an night city as the spider bot climbs a tall apartment building and jumps off of it, the camera tilting downwards to show off more of the street below.

You might find this to look a bit similar to something like Jumping Flash! and you would be right because this game was developed by Exact, the same devs that made the robo-rabbit jumping game, vastly improving and polishing the concept into a super satisfying action shooter. Some kind of dark factory office space with a smaller fenced off storage room, looking like something right out of Shadow Moses island and looking just as cool, while you're circle-strafing around another gray and red spider mech, shooting your machine guns with sparks flying off of its armor.

Tomb Raider (PS1) (1996) 1/5
Born into aristocracy, young Lara Croft's return trip from a skiing resort is dreadfully derailed as her plane crashes in the Himalayas, leaving her to fend for herself. The experience transformed her profoundly and she only felt truly alive when traveling the world alone, discovering new archeological findings. As her family disowned her (though somehow still futzing around Croft Manor), she started writing about her exploits, becoming famous and well situated. What if Batman but Indiana Jones.

Lara running around her massive manor, wearing a sporty crop top and baggy trousers, getting tired of exploring the premises and enters the large, Roman style pool with a covered skylight and decides to take a swim, spreading her arms wide as she's about to do a swan dive.Businesswoman Jacqueline Natla hires Lara to acquire the Scion, an ancient artifact hidden somewhere in the Tomb of Qualopec in Peru. She manages to find the ancient city Vilcabamba, its walls overgrown with moss and shrubs as she finds herself face to face with a big ol' brown bear, standing on its hind legs and towering over Lara while she tries to back up and possibly jump into the nearby pool.Lara's journey takes her to Greece as she swims through a long underwater tunnel, reaching a pool with its white walls covered in paintings of adorable blue dolphins. From Greece to Egypt and beyond, as Lara finds an underground sphinx next to an obelisk full of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs as well as a terrifying thin animal covered in bandages, its skinless pink muscles peeking through the flimsy white covers.

Croc 2 (PS1) (1999) 1/4
Croc is back, putting on his little brown backpack and going on a journey to find his croc family and stop Baron Dante once and for all (again).

The little green crocodile stands on a flimsy wooden bridge over a chasm with some red spiky spikes, thinking about the bulky red enemy on the other side and how to deal with him. Should he do a ka-pow, or a ka-splat? These are the questions weighing heavily on Croc's mind.Croc pushing a frozen block of ice with a little powder keg inside, using it as a heavy object to sit on a red button so he can proceed into the misty, frozen ice land (not to be confused with Iceland). The little crocodile finds himself in a large cave covered in some beautiful pixel art textures, significantly adding to the already charming adventure, with a red button on the floor, a octagonal elevator, a wooden beam with a lantern hanging on it, some crates and a collapsed mineshaft with a little orange hand waving a white handkerchief, yelling for help. The little powder keg conveniently placed nearby might do the trick.Croc doing his best Lara Croft impression as he hangs over a chainlink fence path overhead, collecting diamonds while trying not to fall into a pit full of spikes. One of Baron Dante's pink, horned minions is waiting on the other side, giving Croc a good incentive to get it over with so he can ka-pow the grunt with his little tail.

Warpath: Jurassic Park (PS1) (1999) 1/3
The primal rage of the dinosaurs, engaged in mortal kombat to determine who will be the king of the monsters. 👀

A pretty neat looking fighting game with some clunky controls and awesome looking low-poly dinosaurs, their names shortened so they sound all cute and fluffy even though they're biting each other's necks and doing little kicks and stuff.

Here we have Giga, the blue Giganotosaurus, whose name kinda suggests he might not be that giga, or might not be that saurus, but he looks pretty mean to me as he's looking at the significantly shorter Pachy the Pachycephalosaurus with his bald hard head, made for bonking. The very recognizable visitor center with its large domed roof and a black banner with the red and yellow Jurassic Park font text saying "When Dinosaurs ruled the Earth" as the mighty T-Rex is leaping towards Anky the Ankylosaurus, a four legged armored beast with a spiky back and a round spiky club on his tail, certainly a formidable foe to the tiny-armed T-Rex.The freighter deck from the second film, bringing the T-Rex on the mainland in an incredibly dumb turn of events, the night sky covering the city as the docks tremble from the battle between Spino the Spinosaurus and the aforementioned T-Rex, arguing around who's gonna drink that yellow can of soda next to them, not realizing it's an easily explodeable oil drum.

I think the yellow color threw them off, which is fair enough.A dinosaur outbreak at Universal Studios with Alberto the stripy, handsome Albertosaurus and Cryo the Cryolophosaurus yell at each other while a dude in a white shirt and black pants is just besides himself as he's looking around and running in sheer panic.

RC Helicopter (PS1) (2002) 1/4
A very charming budget PS1 title where you're just a kid using your fresh new orange RC Helicopter to play around with it and help out your neighbors and friends to do mundane jobs in with a fun twist, presented in a very colorful and crisp pixel art texture style, kinda just making you wanna live there.

Here we have the default orange RC heli doing a practice run around your room with blue H landing pad signs plastered on various furniture like the table, shelves full of books and manga and a beautiful white 90s CRT TV with a golden videocassette player and a PS1 with some games on the bottom shelf. You visit the Beakly, but maybe it's a portmanteau of beak and bakery, or it's just a Japanese mispronunciation of bakery.

In any case, the ravens are gathering around the bakery for crumbs (and announcing the inevitable arrival of death) so you gotta use your RC, this time a slim white model that's faster but much harder to control, to spray water at them so they fly away, though they come back in like 20 seconds so it's undoubtedly the toughest level in the game.Your baseball loving friend got a bit careless and managed to hit 10 balls on top of his roof so you gotta use your RC, this time the bulkier blue and yellow helicopter with cool futuristic, angular designs, to hover over the balls to dislodge them and make them roll down off the roof. The music teacher at your school is a very busy lady so she has to run off for an errand, asking you to pick up the portraits of famous classical musicians off the floor and put them on top of the distant shelf in the back. Shown here is your orange RC holding a black and white portrait of one Johann Sebastian Bach as you fly towards a big black CRT TV with some Hi-Fi equipment underneath.

Die Hard Trilogy 2: Viva Las Vegas (PS1) (2000) 1/6
John McClane continues to be the miserable slob he always was while getting a call from a buddy from the NYPD days who is now the warden of the Mesa Grande Prison outside Las Vegas and invites ol' Johnny to a party (prison party, yaaay!) though things go sideways very quickly as notorious terrorist and inmate Klaus Von Haug breaks out and causes a riot (prison riot, yaaaaaaay!) so it's somehow up to John to set things right.

Here we have McClane wearing a tuxedo in the prison's security office full of desks, computers and wall monitors as a crooked prison guard tries to shoot him, but John's go a machi... I mean a shotgun and isn't afraid to use it.A sequel to the trilogy that invents a new story that's not a trilogy but it's called a trilogy number two... anyway the important thing is that the game again has three different genres, a third person shooter, a lightgun shooter and a driving game rolled into one, with John here crashing a roaring 20's themed restaurant with wooden paneling, tables covered in red cloths and lovely black and white photos of the Prohibition era. Time for McClane to wreck it all up.A driving missing with an emergency disposal truck, driving dangerous bombs (is there any other kind?) through a lovely suburban Las Vegas neighborhood (is that a thing?), zooming between houses illuminated by the inner lights with glowing windows and doors in the dark, disgusting depravity of Sin City.A hacked camera with a modern, over the shoulder POV as John shoots up a prison guard and a terrorist standing near a lever, possibly interrupting a dick measuring contest, which John wins because he's got the longest shotgun of them all.

Hybrid (PS1) (1997) 1/4
A Doom-like for the PS1, developed by UK based Motivetime Ltd., possibly known for the 3DO third person shooter Virtuoso, set in a dark future where messing with alien DNA has created hybrids and unleashing a plague that kills most of the population, giving rise to a new dictatorship that may or may not be alien, so four resistance fighters set out to put a stop to whatever's happening I dunno you just shoot stuff at robots and shizz.

A very DOOM-like first person shooter with labyrinthine, low ceiling levels with the addition of a jump button that's more like a jaunty hop, you choose one of four characters, currently running with one George MacKenzie, a buzzcut cyborg with a Kano red eye and a robotic hand, each with their own starting weapon and melee attack and set out to mostly shoot beige bipedal mechs, like this guy that's found his way in this glass ceiling garden with concrete walls and a nice grassy ground,The game's character select screen and static level cutscenes show scanned artwork clearly made by someone that loves Anime but isn't fully there yet with their technique, joining the small group of western-developed games that try to look Japanese (I'm talking about you, Shogo).

Here we have Akiko Tyler, a redhead half-human hybrid and a wielder of the dark arts, being the only character whose melee attack is actually a magical fire projectile, shooting fireballs at another beige mech in the middle of a snowy field, lit up by the full moon in the dark night sky.Playing as the third character, Alien the alien, a humanoid guy with sinewy, exposed muscles, wearing a glass helmet that obscures his visage (not shown here), waving his clawy hand at yet another hunchback, beige mech with a sort of Darth Vader breathing mask face and two red eyes, having two huge guns for hands. The coolest of the cool characters and the one that's shortly seen in the CG intro of the game, one Brad T. Chesterfield (who in the Japanese version is called Bloodchaser Field, apparently), a blonde guy wearing a red headband under his dreadlocks, looking like Edward Kenway from AC:Black Flag, his melee weapon being a very toothy knife, running aorund a dark green marble hallway and waving hid blade at a beige Fuchikoma from Ghost in the Shell, with the little front claw hands and all.

Philosoma (PS1) (1995) 1/4
A very cool STG / SHMUP set on Planet 220 as the colonizers send a distress call as they're invaded by an unknown alien force, but the first two squads fail at their task so Charlie squadron is sent with the latest fighter ships, the F/A-37 Strega, shown here as you traverse a dark, purple canyon with a giant green stealth bomber shaped airplane thing, shooting two red electric beams from its front electric beam cannons. The cool aspect of this game rests on the very cinematic presentation, full of frequent chatter between you and the rest of the squad as well as your commanding officer, as well as the game often shifting to an FMV that continues the action and then changes the perspective to a new point of view, like this scene where the game swaps to a side view, flying over some kind of sci-fi industrial base with military green platforms and walkways on several levels with the blueish floor visible below, swarming with red enemy ships and blue and purple stationary turrets as your yellow Vulcan cannon bullets spray around and your heat seeking missiles search for their targets. The game also shifts to a Crash Bandicoot chase camera, showing your ship from the front as a big cyber-train is rushing towards you inside a dim cyber-tunnel, shooting at your with a charged green cyber-laser, but of course you manage to dispose of it pretty quickly since it's all been built by Tesla.A side view of your Strega ship flying over a futuristic city under a purple-black sky at night, with traces of greenish miasma as two big kinda helicopter-shaped ships without propellers are doing their semi-boss thing and hold you off for a short while until they inevitably explode.

Slamscape (PS1) (1996) 1/3
In a decidedly edgy 90's turn of events, after a terrible car accident, a company secretly puts you in their VR machine that puts spikes into your eyes called the SlamScape Remulator (still in beta testing), asking you to gather all the trapped psyches or Orb-Ids of the other test subjects since the system has gone haywire while also trying to survive in this nightmarish world that's based on your innermost fears and subconscious thoughts. No biggie.

You do this by piloting the Slamjet, a weird hovercraft with vertical exhausts and side fins with a ramming bar in front, flying across four worlds in a very floaty and bouncy way like every level is an ice level.

Starting in the center of Carnivalhalla, an amusement park on a large patch of dirt with a central weird face with a gate for a mouth and four raised hands, beckoning the Orb-Ids to come home as you collect them by going to the four corners of the map and try to solve a "puzzle" by evading floating merry-go-rounds or picking up powerups while shooting at evil teddy bears. The second level, Uraniumania puts you on an irradiated, green land full of magnetized floating orbs (off screen) and more evil teddy bears, now wearing white hazmat suits because it's the sensible thing to do.The world of the Repsychler (these names, man), a dusty desert under a burning orange and red sunset sky with a large central fortress shaped like the face of a robot with four smokestacks.Viva Los Vagrantes is a more lazy rehash of the first world with the same head and raised arms in the center, but now way more psychedelic with a purple squishy floor and purple lights lighting up the skies while little claws with propellers fly around and a brain in a jar with eyes rolls around on a unicycle with two antennae on top doing the little electricity buzz.

Asterix: Mega Madness (PS1) (2001) 1/5
The chief of the small village of the Gauls, one chunky, ginger fellow with a feathered helm called Vitalstatistix, decides to put on a challenge, to determine who is the strongest and most capable Gaul, possibly reinventing the Olympics in the process (what, two brilliant minds can invent the same thing, centuries apart 👀).

Here we have Shoot & Score, setting up catapults around the green fields outside the village and shooting stuff at each other like barrels, fish, cows or Roman soldiers and seeing them fling across the beautiful blue skies with white puffy clouds.Recipe Run puts our hero Asterix, the short statured Gaul with blonde hair and mighty mustachio, wearing red pants, a black sleeveless shirt and a helm with white bird wings on the sides, running around a dimly lit forest, searching for ingredients like flowers, mushrooms and fish, all parts of the secret and powerful, strength-enhancing potion made by the village druid Getafix.

Of course, while he's at it, Asterix takes a bit of a detour to chase and beat up a soldier or two of the Roman Empire as the poor fellow is running for his life, flailing his arms in panic. All that chasing around has opened up an appetite, which is serendipitous since the next challenge is the Food Feast, having all four characters sitting at a table while various meats, jelly deserts and amphoras (ceramic jars) full of wine slide towards them as they munch on the meat and throw the bones over their shoulders into a disgusting pile of boney remains in the back.Time for some more action in Shield Chase as Mrs. Geriatrix, the most beautiful woman in the village, wearing her red hair in a top bun and putting on a green dress that shows off her feminine qualities, also the wife of the oldest villager (hence the title), currently holding a shield over her head like the other contestants while racing through wooden bridges and dirt roads during which nondescript villagers try to balance on the shields and not fall off.

Grand Theft Auto (PS1) (1997) 1/3
A small Scottish game dev studio known for Blood Money, Hired Guns and Uniracers also made a game called Lemmings and sometime after also experimented with a little open world city thing where you answer payphones and do little jobs, steal cars, shoot up cops and listen to some good radio while doing it, spread across three town maps called Liberty City, San Andreas and Vice City.

A top down view, severely limiting your spatial awareness (although the camera zooms out when your driving fast) and making everyone look like little pixelated ants, but it works quite well for the kind of action this game requires. Here we have you getting a mission objective with the voice on the other end of the line saying "Crazy Jimmy's dumped a car in North East Park. Find it before the cops do - or die."

The PS1 apparently has a little less "stuff" but it's still the same game, it was just easier for me to capture some high-res screenshots for it.A little kerfuffle on South Hackenslash street in Liberty City with its blue paved roads and yellow sidewalks. A yellow cab is blocking the way for a couple of cars while a few bikes and their riders lie down on the pavement, splattered and bloody and a cop car swoops in, wee-wooing its lights.Driving a red 4x4 down Southwest Aye Valley as the camera zooms out over an intersection with lovely grassy lawns, palm trees and a red walkway over the road on the right.A dingy brown car driving near East Vice Beach, getting onto the pink sidewalk and swerving dangerously close to a pool.

One (PS1) (1997) 1/4
One of the games on the PS1 called One, it's certainly one of those games.

The game follows John Cain, a bio-mechanically enhanced amnesiac, chased by the police and a sinister force as he's currently walking along the narrow and high-up walkways of a cyberpunk night city, blowing shit up with his Megaman-esque pew-pewing left arm, shooting red lasers at some armored grunts as sparks keep falling down on the unsuspecting layers of streets below.John arrives at a canyon, littered with more enemy troops, bald guys in purple armored suits, carrying large guns, this time accompanied by a small-ish armored spider-mech as one of the grunts runs away and leaves all the heavy lifting to the robot.A boss fight inside an underground tunnel as John Cain stands atop a rushing train, shooting his arm gun at a giant fleshy cyborg running after him, his red muscles covered in tubes and metallic grafts, his robotic skull with two red glowing eyes and two yellow cyber-cores kind of stuck on his chest with cybernetic veins growing out of them.An undercover and also underwater facility with a round chamber covered in glass, showing the dark depths of the ocean with some slowly swerving seaweed and a squiddy three-tentacled monster sticking to the glass and munching on it, letting out a dense wave of bubbles as it's trying to break the glass.

You can't shoot or blast the creature so naturally the only way to deal with it is to jump and punch it with your melee attack because sure why not.

The Arizona Meteor Crater, a muddy poopy colored wasteland with some shacks and a little shop with a big round doughnut and the words "SUPER DONUTS" is the battlegrounds of rollerbladin' Sheila's Wonderwagon, a small pink and white car with a machinegun and a mortar launcher on the back, shooting up an orange pickup truck and a garbage truck as they fight for dominance over the world's oil reserves. Ah, the 70's, I remember them like they were yesterday. The Utah Winter Games resort, a lovely snowy camp with wooden hotels and cottages with long roofs and a dark blue Pontiac Firebird style car with a mounted chaingun on the left, chasing after the Marathon, a bright colored blue and yellow little hatchback car, transformed into a snowmobile with treads and sleighs on the front. The Flying All Star Trio (although only guy is riding) with their Dakota Stunt Cycle, an Evel Knievel looking biker with an attached side car full of fireworks rockets, driving through Louisiana's Ghastly Bayou, the dark orange sunset with a gray mist falling down on the swamp with a lovely bridge with street lights and the white Xanadu RV on the right as you shoot it with your mounted cannon.California's Pacific Harbor, a murky, gray industrial area with factories and large cranes where Chassey Blue's gray Vertigo, looking almost like a DeLorean, especially with its transformed wheels into a hovercraft mode, sliding over the nearby lake.

Poy Poy (PS1) (1997) 1/3
A battle of no wits, only brawns, in this party arena game where four contestants battle it out from a top down perspective with a dynamic camera zooming in as needed, showing a green square in a lovely meadow under blue skies, with some trees, logs and rocks, used as weapons to pick up and throw at your enemy, although one of the contestants figured out you can throw your opponents as well, making the wiggle and flail as they fly across the screen.A blue checkerboard stage with the beautiful lights of the night city seen in the distance as Bubba, the silly guy with a bowl cut hair and green onesie (everyone wears onesies of different colors to easily identify them) while one of the rocks scattered on the stage just straight up stands on its two feet and unfurls its dinosaur-like mouth with sharp teeth. The championship mode puts you in the contest, earning money and spending it in the gloves shop, shown here with a cute black haired attendant in a red suit and pink bowtie, with various gloves shown under display glass that give you different powers during a match, though the low-poly and mostly untextured nature of the graphics might seem like they're just keeping the severed hands of the former contestants.A desert stage with a giant rocky ribcage protruding from the ground while the blue heroic Harry holds up a crate with DANGER! written on it and the blonde Cindy in a white onesie is being carried away by a whirlwind behind him.

Breath of Fire IV (PS1) (2000) 1/6
A grand adventure with one of the most beautiful graphics, environment and character designs with so much charm and love poured into it that it's just a joy to look at and play even today.

Here's Ryu, the blue haired young main in a white sleeveless shirt and brown pants, exploring the small desert town of Sarai with its maze-like narrow streets, sanding in front of a cute big purple chicken-vulture creature with reins and lots of packages and pouches strapped on its back. An old man in an also purple shirt stands in front of a street stand full of trinkets, dried fruit and a red treasure chest. A peculiar anthropomorphic purple guy (perhaps looking kinda monkey-ish) stands in front of the entrance to a tavern. The party consisting of Ryu, wielding a sword, Princess Nina of Wyndia, a blonde, short haired girl with a blue headband and cloak with angel wings on the back, holding a scepter, and Ershin, a short and very round suit of armor with two yellow lights for eyes, standing at the ready on a flimsy wooden bridge leading to a steampunkish industrial area where a nasty half-insect, half-skeleton creature called a Zombie (go figure) is being hit by Nina's purple exploding magic while its monstrous buddy, Gasser - a human head full of holes with green miasma exuding from them is floating around and getting ready to poison the heroes.A later party consisting of Ryu who we all know by now, Scias, a tall and lanky anthropomorphic dog guy, a mercenary in a long green and orange robe, wielding a long sword, and Ursula, commander Ursula, a purple lady with a human face, fox ears and tail, short tempered and stubborn and likes to shoot out of her guns a lot. They're running through an arched green stone bridge with white safety rails going over a beautiful river, leading to a traditional Chinese looking gate.Nina and Ursula visiting a quaint fishing village with straw shacks built on the water, talking to a very cute blue frog person in a white shirt and pink puffy pants, just kicking their legs as they're fishing as saying "You're a fisherman too?"

Bust A Groove (PS1) (1998) 1/3
It's time to bust that groove in a dancing battle between awesome, colorful characters and even more colorful stages, this time inside a dark and sinister secret laboratory where Gas-O (disregard the HUD saying Hiro, something got botched there on my side), a weird gas mask wearing guy with an orange and black protective suit and two gas tanks on his back, flipping on his head and doing a headspin while his opponent, Frida, the hip-hop breakdancer with long blue hair, white headband, orange shirt and green camo pants is just chillin' and groovin' while this weirdo is clearly overdoing it to impress her.Kelly, the beautiful blonde business woman by day hides a rather peculiar fetish of infantilizing herself, wearing a blue baby onesie (with a crotch flap and all), wearing a white headband and holding a baby rattle, seductively dancing inside a cylindrical orange and pink room with a huge baby bottle in the middle and is probably responsible for awakening certain things in lots of people that played this game at the time. 👀The Ryu of the breakdancing world, the man called Heat. He was a racing driver that got into an accident with the firey explosion awakening a superpower within him and enabling to manipulate fire. The trauma of the crash kept him from racing again so he chose the next best thing, to become a breakdancer.

Heat looks like if Speed Racer just put on a red beanie and let his hair down a bit more, wearing a white body suit with red flames on the leggings and thick white boots, doing some footwork while leaning on his right hand.More fetishes being awakened with Kitty-N, the star of the Love Love Senshi Miracle 5 tv show, wearing a tight white and pink body suit with a tail and her headgear holding a pink gem and cat ears, her green rolled up hair flowing behind her as she looks fabulous and does a 4 move combo in front of a disco-lit wall with a pink logo of a cat head behind her.

Nuclear Strike (PS1) (1997) 1/4
As part of the STRIKE covert operations force, you pilot several helicopters across the world to put a stop on Colonel Beauford LeMonde's efforts to steal a nuclear weapon, currently fighting over a riverside village somewhere in Southeast Asia, blowing up a tank on a village path near some shacks and houses. The plan doesn't go very much to plan as the former spy turned warlord LeMonde manages to steal the warhead and keeps evading STRIKE's attacks, so your team employs the services of a mercenary, delivering him a package to a villa complex with high white and pink walls.

The entire terrain in this top-down helicopter game looks like one massive unique texture with lots of details, although the quality of the texture is often quite low and compressed, with very noticeable JPEG-like artifacts, but it's still kinda impressive that it all fits in PS1's memory.Attacking an airfield on a tropical island full of missile launchers and a few enemy helicopters as they scramble to retaliate, but they're too slow and your missiles hit their target as another one bites the dust-ah.A town square in Pyongyang with a central radio tower, tall public speaker poles and some orange and yellow apartment buildings plastered with posters of the great leader.

World Destruction League: Thunder Tanks (PS1) (2000) 1/2
You know the drill, a world destruction tournament set in real world and fictional cities, but now with tanks! The tournament mode lets you choose from a dozen characters with their corresponding tanks, and the words "Prepare for Minneapolis" pop up in the bottom of the screen, like a thinly veiled threat.

So here we are, a football stadium with rows and rows of rafters filled with the blood thirsty crowd of the near future as your brown tank with huge treads covering the entire height of the vehicle tries to hid behind some spiky barricades from an enemy tank that's throwing some flames at you. The cover isn't very effective. The snowy streets of St. Petersburg, littered with barricades and stationary turrets looking like three ATMs squeezed together but instead of money they shoot out glowing purple plasma orbs.A huge blue tank roaming the streets of Kyoto as a red tank waddles near the half ruined apartment buildings while you're just enjoying the view of a large red Torii gate. There's not a ton of variety in building models and textures in this game, despite it being a globe-trotting tournament so a lot of the cities blend together as these misty, gray, industrial area neighborhoods so like this one's the same aside from having one of the enemy tanks explode in a circular wave of fire while the wreckage burns with a satisfying black smoke rising from it.

Xevious 3D/G+ (PS1) (1997) 1/5
The Solvalou, a cool white space fighter with blue strips and two engine exhausts in a vertical arrangement, setting off to fight the Xevious forces as they invade and plan to take over the Earth, only this time... in 3D!

The game introduces powerups to a Xevious game as well as a two player mode, but the basic gameplay is still there, shoot blue arrows, green lasers or gangly homing red electric beams at flying enemies and drop bombs on the ground vehicles and buildings.

The classic first stage over an island with lots of green meadows, forests and rivers makes a comeback, designed very tastefully in a somewhat minimalist style, nice and simple grass and dirt textures and lots of clean, untextured polygons for the enemies and structures, managing to maintain the original's flair while still looking good even today, in this very low-poly, high-res peek at the game.

Flying over a vast sci-fi structure looking like the surface of the death star, interspersed with blue lines with lights and doodads, looking like straight rivers that flow into a central circular well, filled with even more lights (expensive apartments, I bet) and the central blue section almost looking like a pool of water.

Two pentagonal gray UFOs fly above the well as your ship shoots red homing lasers, bending and wiggling as they reach their target. The Solvalou flying over some ruins in a vast sandy desert, reaching a plateau of four small pyramids and domes and three angular UFOs with red cores on the top so the cool fighter ship unleashes a stream of thick green lasers for maximum effect.A cold, snowy wilderness with a sole river flowing through it, its water dark as obsidian, as your ship blows up a few smaller alien triangles in a fresh explosion that looks tasty green like the inside of a cucumber.

Pop'n Tanks! (PS1) (1999) 1/3
An adorable arena shooter starring even more adorable chibi tanks, akin to Metal Slug or the Dominon Tank Police series, small treads, big turrets, colorful characters and lots of explosives.

Here we have Puel Tatla, the male protagonist, a scrappy, green haired lad with safety goggles on his head (not shown here), driving the Petit Mk-1 (the full name is E.O. Tarin PT "Petit" Mk-I Middle Tank, but I ain't gonna write that every time, no way), a white and blue vehicle, currently targeting the alternate colored red version of the same tank while driving around a delightful village with some trees, barrels, dirt roads and patches of grass, peppered with bright 3D spherical explosions.A sandy desert with some ancient ruins is the battlegrounds, or rather chasing grounds of one Vokkle-Gardenloyd, piloting the porcine Malgopork, a very WWI tank covered in orange and brown colors with two rectangular glass windows for eyes and the front looking like a piggy snout, currently driving away frantically from Long-Tom, a flat and wide green vehicle with cannons on the sides of its treads, piloted by Gunt (just Gunt), a burly middle aged man with balding hair, looking like if Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star was the ginger bastard child of Dr. Robotnik and Dr. Wily (again, not shown here but drawn wonderfully in the character select screen).A plateau inside the castle grounds with lots of walls and windows and banners with red flags and a golden circle emblem where the adorable Panzer-Sinamon tank, looking like a cake on a plate with a strawberry on top of its turret, piloted by the blue-haired princess Domina and the tall blonde moustachioed Hekkele, dodging the rainbow colored triangular shots of the purple Dorilger, a tank with a big drill in front of it, piloted by Ferina Von Linemetal, a "ooohohoho" laughing white and purple haired lady in a pink uniform. The undead and quite tall and handsome blonde soldier Eizan Date, wearing a captain's hat and purple cape, with a pale blue skin, driving the Type-38, the most tankish of the tanks, just a green tank with a cannon, then turret on top of the cannon, and then a turret on top of that turret (what has the world turned into), doing a sideways drift from Ferina's machinegun shots as they battle inside the grotto of a volcano, surrounded by the tall volcanic rocks and some red hot lava.

Shinrei Jusatsushi Tarōmaru (Saturn) (1997) 1/6
Psychic Killer Tarōmaru or Spiritual Assassin Tarōmaru is a wonderful arcade style action platformer presented in a similar fashion to something like Strider 2 where the characters, enemies and bosses are beautiful 2D sprites while the backgrounds are a mix of 3D and 2D with just as wonderful pixel art texture work.

The story puts ninjas Tarōmaru and Enkai in feudal Japan, on a mission from a terrified husband to save his kidnapped wife (and numerous other women), taken by demon ninjas.

The game throws you right into a boss fight (one of many) in front of a gray wall with short roof tiles near a dirt road, dimly lit by the giant moonlight in the night sky as two giant skulls peek from behind the bushes, cackling and summoning purple spirit flames.

Tarōmaru, in his purple ninja outfit, green fingerless gloves and maskless face, showing his long white hair tied in a pony tail and a white bandana, displays his psychic killer powers by raising his arm and aiming a targeting reticule, snapping at the nearest enemy and shooting mental bolts of lightning, as one does.Tarōmaru traversing a burning castle, hanging over beams like a real Strider Hiryu (though far less nimble) and shooting psychic lightning at a possessed wooden wheel, surrounded by flaming espers.Tarōmaru's quest takes him to dangerous rushing rapids as he tries to balance himself on a piece of broken off wooden bridge, alongside a ninja flashing in a yellow glow, looking like someone pissed on him because Tarōmaru's other power is hypnotizing lesser enemies to fight for him.

What I neglected to mention is that the canyon rapids are the home of a giant for monster, chasing after the ninjas with a confident smirk, waving its dangly arms made out of green round filled doughnuts, possibly showing off some of Hiroshi Iuchi's artistic and technical sensibilities as a Treasure alumni.Tarōmaru falls out of a cave tunnel, revealing the beautiful orange sun peeking behind the cloudy sunset skies as he realizes he's miles up in the air near a tall wooden construction with a fleshy one-eyed Beholder-like monster grabbing him with its psychic orb danglers, encasing him in a transparent fleshy orb as the ninja tries to zap the monstrosity and free himself.

Keriotosse! (Saturn) (1998) 1/2
A Power Stone like fighter for the Saturn that's honestly more like a clunky Mario Party mini game where four characters fight it out on a circular arena, attacking with special powers or just kicking beach balls into each other and since there's no health, the goal is to bonk your opponents off the edge of the level.

Here we have a bit of a rainy, swampy arena with some ponds, water lilies and four characters running around, including Byakuran the lovely elf lady, Carrel the waitress in a sexy bunny costume, Fur the magician girl with purple hair and a pink dress and Enten the grumpy bald monk.Another arena on a circular plate made out of black marble square blocks, floating in the air as it tilts left and right, sliding the characters slowly to one side, including the aforementioned grumpy monk, with some new unlockable fighters (of which there are 15, so lots of wacky characters to choose from) like an adorable little panda with a red and green cap, a lovely blonde nurse and a dark haired warrior in a black coat and red bandana, with also a couple of beach balls and rocks slowly rolling off the arena. An icy stage with the magic girl Fur shooting trailing balls of light as yellow stars sparkle out of the butts of the enemies she's hit, with one of the magical balls bouncing towards Kurtz the white combat robot that kinda looks like a cool dude from a Super Sentai show.A lava stage full of red hot lava and lava adjacent liquids, with some patches of rocky land and a central volcano spouting hot rocks and causing Akira-style orb explosions, burning up all the contestants including a little turnip looking guy with a few strands of green hair (or actual greens).

Transformers: Beast Wars Transmetals (N64) (2000) 1/3
Megatron, finally being defeated by the Maximals, is being transported back to Cybertron but he manages to send a message back in time to his younger self, changing the course of history and causing several Transformers to evolve into their Transmetal forms and becoming even more fabulous than ever before.

Here we have the cheeky Cheetor, running around a sandy desert with his yellow spotted cheetah armor, looking like he's frolicking in the sand along with Tarantulas (who is a tarantula), a shiny golden Predacon with red armor bits, many eyes on his chest and even more spiky spider legs on his back, looking like he tripped over a little rock and is about to smush his face in the sand, followed by a hearty laugh.A gloomy gray cave with a surreal purple background, looking like a stage for a Power Rangers battle with the greenscreen not calibrated properly, showing the fight between Waspinator in his Beast mode, turning into a big blue wasp with yellow eyes, red body and green wings, flying towards Rattrap, shiny chrome robot with a blue torso and brown rat bits on his back, holding his robo-gun and getting ready to squish this insect.A pale purple field surrounded by purple (energon?) crystals as Airazor and Terrorsaur fly around each other in their Beast forms, a hot falcon lady with blueish purple colors and a gold and red pterodactyl, respectively, showing no respect as they prolong the battle indefinitely with neither side letting down, so the chase goes on.The big boys, Optimus Primal in his Beast mode, a gorilla with brown and silver armor with a big grin on his blue head, which he's currently holding dangerously close inside Megatron's T-Rex maw, just doing a little trick or Megatron possibly asking Optimus to check if there's a little fish bone stuck in his gob.

Ms. Pac-Man Maze Madness (PS1) (2000) 1/3
While Mr. Pac-Man is off on a three-day power pellet binge, Ms. Pac-Man goes on an adventure, helping Professor Pac (no relation?) restore the Enchanted Castle and its four Gems of Virtue taken by the evil witch Mesmerelda, going through four themed worlds, the first one being inspired by ancient Egypt, with Ms. Pac-Man standing in the middle of an old labyrinth made out of stone blocks, with lots of yellow floating power pellets and a couple of the ghosts sporting royal headdresses usually worn by pharaohs. An icy world with a snowy maze covered in the bones of a giant T-Rex, conveniently scattered to allow for some passage under the ribs while some of the bones serving as obstacles to move around. There's no cultural appropriation here in the Chinese themed Pac Ping Harbor, it's just straight up invasion by Ms. Pac-Man as she disembarks in the harbor and enters the crate-filled maze with a big puppet dragon made out of several segments worn by dancers (or the ghosts of dancers if we're sticking to the Pac-Man lore), ready to eat suspicious yellow pills right from the floor and go on a rampage to eat up all the spirits haunting this harbor.Another themed world puts Ms. Pac-Man in a Halloween world inside the castle grounds maze filled with yellow leaves, street lights, chains and vampires turning into dopey bats with googly eyes. Which makes me think, what are these vampires feeding on? I see ghosts roaming the maze so they don't count. Does the Pac family bleed? Are they actually made out of fleshy bits stuffed in a yellow orb, kinda like the giant jar people from Elden Ring? I shiver at the thought.
