On point B, the NASA Exoplanet Archive typically serves ~10-20TB of data per month. In July it jumped to 70TB. In August it jumped to 600TB. So either our user base organically grew *30x* in two months (... unlikely), OR the bots have taken over already.

People that think sports superstitions are entirely baseless should do some reading into physics and the observer effect. Sometimes they're just a misapplication of things.

Nihar Shah did a heroic experiment for TMLR: he spent 20-25 hours over two weeks interviewing authors of seemingly low-quality submissions about their own papers. He confirmed what we all suspected: people submitting these papers have *no idea* what is going on in them.

The rate this is suggesting for 2026 hits a point of being hard for me to process: "the fraction of astro-ph papers whose analyzed prose shows a language-model trace reaches 54% in 2025, up from 20% in 2024, and it reaches 87% in the first half of 2026." (errors removed for bluesky readability)

Incredibly fortunate and grateful to have had @jackiekashian.bsky.social and Andy on. She's been one of my fav comedians for over two decades now, and while most of her comedy isn't about video games, I haven't heard material about video games that resonated with my ties to video games like hers did

Spent like 5 hours at the Lucas Museum yesterday, and stumbled upon this article today: www.artnews.com/art-news/rev... While I don't fully agree, the core criticism about the lack of context and narrative for the works feels like a validation of how I felt yesterday (though I still enjoyed it)

I think this is a good time to mention the book "No One May Ever Have The Same Knowledge Again: Letters to Mount Wilson Observatory 1915-1935", edited by Sarah Simons, and is a collection of some of the sorts of letters Mt Wilson was getting for two decades (I've only read a few from it)

7. It's yet another thing that AI has stolen away from the current generation of scientists. Yet again, AI proves to be an anti-egalitarian force in that these abuses force us to abandon the Mertonian norm of universalism for increased reliance on credentials, reputation, and personal connections.

Garfield was right, Mondays are the worst! Papers appearing in the long Monday arXiv postings seem to be cited less Have a read of "Which is the best day of the week to submit to arXiv:astro-ph?" while enjoying some lasagne arxiv.org/abs/2608.11268 ☄️
Which is the best day of the week to submit to arXiv:astro-ph?

Chirag Sharma, Shantanu Desai

We examine whether the citations received by refereed astronomy papers vary systematically with the day of the week of their arXiv preprint release. We use NASA ADS citation data for all refereed articles published in 2020-2023 in six journals (MNRAS, ApJ, ApIL, ApJS, AGA and ICAP; 37,173 papers with astro-ph primary preprints), combined with version-1 submission timestamps from the arXiv API. We group papers both by submission weekday and by the day their announcement batch appears on arXiv, accounting for arXiv's weekday deadline and lack of weekend announcements. Given the heavy skew of citation distributions, our primary statistic is the median citations per group, with bootstrap confidence intervals. Papers Submitted on weekends, all of which appear in the Monday listing, have median citations Significantly lower than weekday submissions in five of the six journals, by 12-26%; the sixth (JCAP) shows the same direction, but not significantly, consistent with ts small weekend sample. Median citations are indistinguishable across the five weekdays. These results extend the recent reported weekend citation disadvantage in particle and nuclear physics to astronomy. The link is correlational, consistent with either compositional variations in weekend
Submissions of reduced visibility in the enlarged Monday listings.
