A brown dirt trail wraps around the clear blue-green / turquoise glacial waters of Middle Joffre Lake. It's a narrow trail flanked by boulders and trees on one side and logs on the left serving to fortify the bank. The trees are vivid green in the foreground and become a muted, opaque silhouette on the far side of the water. We will return to hike here this year, it's one of our favorite places on the planet, it has embedded itself in our souls.

The chiselled landscape of Antarctica in glowing sunlight. The hills have hues of copper, brown, yellow and green. Patches of snow can be seen under drifting clouds that transition from white to blue / black toward the edges.

Of the many places I’ve travelled, none has had as much lasting impact than Antarctica. Few have gone, far fewer ventured below the Antarctic Circle, as we did.

Looking east, and a bit south to the Cascade Range in Washington State. The greens in the field in the foreground are muted by frost, the trees and landscape mid-frame, obscured by fog. There's a golden glow above the mountain, the small pop of white is the sun reflecting off an aircraft.

Don't know if I'm breaking a rule here as I've set my sky to the white balance assigned in-camera, everything below was "corrected" by Capture One. In any event the outing became a "fog" theme as the curtain of fog rose to meet / cover the sunrise.

The bow of a shipwreck with a broken wooden hull and rusting metal stacks: Laying on a sandy beach. There are dark, blue-grey skies and heavy rain coming in at an angle. It's working up to a squall, a test of the power of Gore-Tex versus nature.

The stunning remains of this wreck sit on a pebbled beach with a backdrop of rainforests. We're looking past the remnants of the bow, through driving rain into the Hecate Strait, the notoriously rough waters that drove the 264-foot log barge aground during a winter storm in 1928.

On this day we were to take a day long zodiac ride to SGang Gwaay UNESCO World Heritage Site and National Historic Site: Cancelled due to rough seas. It makes me wonder why I thought this trail was a good idea. I guess I wanted to test my raingear. We came back on the following day to hike in the sunshine, which felt like it was a completely different place. The Pesuta Shipwreck Trail is one of the most popular hiking trails on Haida Gwaii.

Hundreds of parrots dig for nutrients in a clay hillside above Río Napo in Parque Nacional Yasuní. The spectacle is weather dependent, we got lucky as the birds were absent for a few days prior to our visit. My wife, and my nephew climb the groomed path into the misty rainforest. Everything is a bit moist, the air is invigorating, super-charged with oxygen. We're enjoying the "easy" climb as things get rougher, and a lot warmer as we pass the second, or middle Joffre Lake.
