One of the main reasons fraternities still exist is that membership signals to potential employers that you’re capable of keeping institutional secrets, even when it means covering up illegal behavior.

In this moment, I hope all of us are thinking about how to support the survivors who are demanding more. College campuses are often the source of social change. The students find optimism in the places the rest of us are cynical. And they will be more powerful if we stand in solidarity with them.

@jessethorn.bsky.social It’s my husband’s 50th birthday this weekend. In lieu of a cake, I got him 50 IT’S-ITS, overnighted from the Bay Area to Maine.

This is the crux of it. We can't have nice things because too many Americans would rather make life harder for themselves than let go of the belief that they're inherently superior to anyone lower on the ladder than they are (especially if the person lower on the ladder has darker skin).

I will say it until I’m out of breath but if you’re critical of colleges offering “fake” degree programs with absolutely no intellectual rigor, start with the undergrad business degree or I’m not taking you seriously. 100% fake curriculum of airport Leadership slop.

Happy 12th birthday, Chloe!

Sociology is amazing. Our biggest problem is bad-faith actors who maliciously spurn the field because we teach people how societies work and they'd rather we all stay in the dark. Not today, Satan!

Who would prioritize white patriarchal displays of social power over petting these ears?
A smiling brown puppy with little white tips on his feet, sitting on the sidewalk with a green leash, begging for strangers to pet him. (His name is Koa. He’s 15 weeks old. We have no idea what his breed is. And yes, he IS the friendliest puppy ever!)

It’s worth noting that Taco Bell identified the source before the FDA did, and promptly pulled it from their stores. The FDA didn’t even name the source until Taylor Farms outed themselves, and hasn’t issued a recall. Basically, Taco Bell is now a more reliable authority than the FDA.

If sexual abuse was really considered a terrible thing, the world's richest and most powerful people wouldn't be abusers. The most valued technology wouldn't produce sexual abuse on demand. And allegations of abuse wouldn't be framed as positive depictions of masculinity. Our culture rewards abuse.

danah boyd recently argued that social media (as we knew it) is mostly dead; what we have now is parasocial media: journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/... I agree. Networked social media is disappearing, replaced by a new logic/structure of content creator, creator-centered community, & algorithm.

I also wonder if Trustees prefer administrators with up-and-out aspirations over ones who want to stay long term, since up-and-out aspirations might make administrators easier for Trustees to manipulate during the time they're there.
