This week I had the privilege of coordinating the first cross-gov Digital Accessibility Week. I’m incredibly proud of what we collectively achieved and genuinely amazed by how popular it was. My session had more than 300 attendees, which blew me away. accessibility.blog.gov.uk/2026/05/11/g...

I had some surgery (nothing too serious) last weekend and trying to take it easy so decided to eventually watch Lord of the Rings movies. I've read the books before but never watched the films. Bilbo has just disappeared and Gandalf is concerned about what's going on in Mordor so far...

On the gardening theme, my herb garden is also flourishing, particularly the mint. Mojitos and mint teas for everyone. If anyone has any other good recipes then send them my way.

My strawberries have grown really well this year considering they were half dead and dug up from last year. A little nurturing and safe environment goes a long way.

I'm glad I'm not an 'apple person' the new liquid glass design is not good unless their user research showed that people wanted to be spooked by 'ghost apps' then they've nailed it 👻

Today has been very nice, been sitting in the garden all day and now about to light the BBQ was not expecting this weather. Enjoying my Christmas present KISS Destroyer craft lager today, it's very nice, cheers'ing to a good friend who is no longer with us on her birthday.

I recently received an email that was signed off '...Without Malice...(persons name)' and 2 things I took from that: 1. I like their style and may use myself 2. Feel like there definitely was some malice

Until about a year ago I was totally anti e-reader, now I carry this ancient, beat up Kindle with a light contraption everywhere and refuse to get a new one. #Kindle #Books
A hand holding first generation Kindle e-reader in a grey case that opens like a book. It has a book light attached because it's not back lit. The case is open and the kindle shows page 1 of chapter 5 of Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins.A Kindle in a Kindle cover with a book light attached the case is black with white star constellations, it's a bit worn out looking

I've not been on here a while as the person I usually interacted with isn't around anymore and every time I opened the app I felt a bit glum. Today I'm missing it a bit so here I am. Nothing exciting to report, so there's that.

I wasn't going to post anything about the passing of my dear friend, because I'm so very sad. However, I've taken such comfort in reading all the lovely things about her today and I also wanted to remind people that it's ok to be sad, it's ok to take time to be sad, especially at times like this.

I have a lot of different coloured pens, I tend to hold them when I take notes on Teams calls and sometimes they are visible to others in my hand. Sometimes I like to quickly swap the pen during calls more than once, to see if people notice. So far they haven't and it feels like my little secret.

We put our Christmas decorations up today, my house looks like a 90s Santa's grotto. My favourite is my angel tree topper which I think is from early 1970s. Most of the decorations have been inherited or collected over the years, recent additions are mainly McDonald's Christmas Happy Meal toys 🤣

Finished reading Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir (who wrote The Martian which is also a movie) last night. Set in the near future, school science teacher turned astronaut tries to save earth, a great story of selflessness and cooperation. Loved this best book I've read this year 10/10 #BookReviews

Tonight I'm attempting to make an accessibility advent calendar using the prototype kit. I haven't done anything like this for a while so potentially will be crap. Thought I should plan something festive though for training purposes.

I recently read Our Wives Under The Sea by Julia Armfield. This was a tricky one, I'm not 100% if I enjoyed it or not but it stayed with me. A supernatural horror story focused on a lesbian couple navigating the aftermath of a trip under the sea. 6/10 mainly because it ended abruptly. #BookReview
Book cover for Julia Armfield's Our Wives Under The Sea. It shows a reflection in a mirror of the head and shoulders of a white woman with blonde hair. She isn't wearing clothes as if she has just come out a bath or shower. There is a wet substance distorting the mirror, it appears thicker than water.

Talk on inclusive research is excellent. Key takeaways are you'll not always get it right for every person, but it's better to try and learn from it than to do nothing. #TechSharePro2024

Lori @lori-t.bsky.social · 14/11/2024
It shouldn't be so hard to do the right thing, back to the old Unicorn analogy. Accessibility Specialists and people who work in accessibility can't do everything. We are humans too some of whom have a disability or are neurodiverse themselves. It shouldn't be just up to us to burn ourselves out.

Lori @lori-t.bsky.social · 14/11/2024
Looking forward to the talk this afternoon about burnout and how to avoid it. But it does have me thinking, why is this still happening. It's a known thing that happens to a lot of people in accessibility roles and its ridiculous and sad. Things need to change to stop this.
000
Lori @lori-t.bsky.social · 14/11/2024
Also reminder, WCAG isn't everything. You could pass WCAG with a completely unusable website/service/app. @craigabbott.bsky.social had an excellent talk, Beyond WCAG, that covered why going beyond the accessibility regulations matter. www.craigabbott.co.uk/decks/beyond...

Reminder too though, from October 2023, the UK Public Sector Accessibility Regulations require the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA rather than the previous 2.1 AA. #TechSharePro2024

The captions have been great in general though. The eardrum I had rebuilt many years ago always plays up when I get a cold and the clicking and tinnitus is awful and distracting. I like that both manual and auto are available as I like to read it quickly even with the AI typos.
