I love reading a journaling game actual play post and seeing the ways they play like I do. The way Uoshi lets their unconscious tell them the starting situation and who they are and that elements from their other play, like the Brumvar world, should be in this game, is exactly how I play.

One of the final entries is written as a transcript from a recovered recording. Apparently, I was already halfway to sound design before I even knew I wanted to make an audio drama. 😂

of the mission/BAA. Cam's family, for example, didn't exist in the original journal. That came during adaptation. The funny thing is, toward the end of the journal, I'd already started experimenting with audio storytelling without realizing it.

The challenge was figuring out what needed to stay narration vs what would work better as an actual scene. I've written a LOT of new dialogue & scenes. Things that were originally summarized in a paragraph now get to play out between characters, and I've expanded their relationships & lives outside

Yes! And honestly, that's been one of the most interesting parts of adapting it. The journal already had a lot of the story, dialogue, and major events, but everything was filtered through Hestia's perspective.

Anyway. That's how Operation Bellwether started. I've still got the original journal, all 78-ish pages of it, complete with crossed-out words, questionable decisions, and a frankly unreasonable amount of emotional investment in fictional people.

So I finished the game, put the journal away, and moved on. At no point did I think, "You know what this needs? A full cast, sound design, and an absurd amount of audio production work." That particular lapse in judgment wouldn't happen until almost two years later.

About six weeks later, I'd filled roughly 78 pages. (Same pen & ink the entire time.) And somewhere in those pages, I'd gotten really attached to these characters. I'd written a story that I thought was pretty interesting & then proceeded to hurt my own feelings with it. You know...as one does.

On April 30, 2024, I sat down with a journal & my trusty Sailor PGS. (Fellow fountain pen nerds, I see you. 🖋️ It's the Solar Term "Yuzuyu" colorway. I used Sailor Shikiori Shitoshito ink.) No real plan. No outline. Just the PDF, a d6, a deck of cards, & a willingness to see where things went.

When I found out solo journaling RPGs were a thing, I went poking around itch.io & found Bureau of Paranatural Survey: Wicked Congregation by Daniel Kwan. Secret government agency? Weird artifacts? Paranatural investigations? My Warehouse 13/CONTROL/SCP-loving brain was delighted. I was doomed.

What Cage has done for literally the past decade is exactly this, he finds a weird eccentric script by a first time filmmaker, signs on, his name brings in clout, he makes the film, and sometimes it's not very good. But it's still artistic as hell. This is why I *love* Cage.

Spent tonight learning how to build and save FX chains in REAPER. I can now make someone sound like they're communicating over a terrible government-issued radio. This is, unfortunately, a critical skill for the audio drama we're making. Sound designers: what's your favorite FX trick?
