#HalloweenHorrorthon says hello to a very GOOD BOY! Indy, our hero protagonist (a dog), goes with his owner Todd for a stay in Todd's grandpa's definitely not haunted cabin in the woods. Family curse, creepy mud monster, unique concept AND run time of just over an hour made this a nice tight scare.

2) this year was DC's 40th year. they're pretty clear about what they are and I have no doubt there are infinite blog posts/youtube vids/reddit threads about "so you're going to your first DC." there are plenty of resources for decision making and planning. you didn't trip, fall and buy that badge.

Celebration and cons like it will have exclusive merch from big name brands/companies. We've got people who make highly detailed wooden wall art based on theme park ride schematics. One isn't 'better' than the other, it depends on what you want; just be clear about what each is offering.

I have seen exclusive footage and heard tidbits at panels at DC, but that's not what the con is *for.* Disney isn't going to premier their latest tv series cast at this rinky dink operation (complimentary). They'll go to SDCC, NYCC or Celebration where there is media infrastructure to back it up.

The kill bill sirens moved into a different key at that point. If you are comparing a single property, corporate run con against DCon (a fan-run non-profit) of course it's going to suffer by comparison. Of course there's no big announcements here!

I'm not claiming it can't be information overload, but to say you "don't know" where shit is or how to find it, there's some willful fucking ignorance happening here. The other thing that became clear is 1) these folks are big Star Wars fans and 2) they were making comparisons to SW Celebration.

My first DC, the schedule was printed on god's shittiest paper, held together with two staples that wouldn't last the weekend, updates were delivered to the info booths by hand (also on paper) and I STILL got where I was going on time. Skill fucking issue.

If you turn on location, the app can do a "how to get from here to there" if you can't find a panel room. If you have shitty cell service, there are even physical information desks in every hotel! You can speak to a real human to direct you where you want to go!

The other book has additional schedule info and bios of all the guests. There is also AN APP. Updated throughout the weekend, the app can be filtered to specific program tracks, searched for guests, and used to build your own personal schedule. They even have the fan-run photoshoots in there now.

DragonCon is not a small convention. It is split across five hotels and two buildings of the AmericasMart, either of which would be large enough to hold their own events. There is a LOT going on, frequently all at once. It has its challenges and criticisms (I had fun with the post-con survey) BUT

The problem emerged when listening to their convo about some of their critiques. I can't remember their exact words now, between time + distance + the heat + the kill bill siren going off in my skull, but a portion of it amounted to them not knowing where things were / what was happening when.

This year in particular the heat was VERY bad, which meant any outdoor lines + walking between the venue buildings was more daunting than usual. I had a neck fan and a continuously full water bottle and I still took plenty of breaks back in the hotel room.

The two folks behind me (in their late 20s I guess?) are talking about how they are finding the con experience. Two things become clear quickly: 1) this is their first DCon 2) they are not entirely enjoying themselves And that's okay! DCon is not a great con for everyone. (I could list reasons why)

John is 1) queer and 2) a student of Eastern languages. As a student at Oxford, he stumbled across some references to a dark Buddhist sect called the Black Helmets. I'm sure the references to them as "eaters of flesh" is just hyperbole.
