An eye-catching design for "The Ideal Location" - the County Borough of West Ham, then in Essex, & indeed, thanks to quirks of Victorian planning legislation, one of the 'hubs of Industrial London'. It appears in a 1936 printing trade handbook. ↘️ flic.kr/p/2swduc1
Hub of Industrial London ; County Borough of West Ham : specimen cover : in : Typographical Association Souvenir 1936 : A specimen cover from the Typographical Association's souvenir handbook from their Triennial Delegate Meeting that was held in Torquay in 1936. As well as Association 'business' the handbook looks at the work of printers in the South-Western Group and this included the work of the Gloucester Printers Ltd. "Blackfriars Press" who included this specimen cover.

Suitably eye-catching the cover to a booklet for the County Borough of West Ham - "the ideal location" and "the hub of industrial London". West Ham, then in the ceremonial county of Essex, was one of the very few County Boroughs in the London area - neighbouring East Ham being another and Croydon in Surrey the other. It was indeed a centre of industrial activity notably along the banks of the River Lee/Lea in the Stratford area, around Plaistow and down towards the River Thames and the Docks. This conglomeration was in many ways the result of Victorian legislation banning noxious industries from London; therefore the sites just over the county boundary in Essex were 'ideal'. The cover is remarkably colourful with the coat of arms in the centre of an industrial cog wheel and the curvaceous lettering for West Ham. The centre and coat of arms are in red surrounded by a black cogwheel design that carries the sub-text and is surrounded by rings of red fading to orange and then yellow concentric rings. The "County Borough of " and "West Ham" appears on two black bands towards the lower edge and "printed by" in lower right.

I wonder if this was simply a proposed design or if the book was actually issued?

The forgotten garden of Kingsbury. For a brief period of time in the 1950s & 60s there was a formal garden laid out just off Stag Lane. It belonged to Frigidaire, who had a sizeable factory facing onto the A5. By the late 1960s it was turned into car park. Its now a Toyota motor dealership.

Sad news to wake up to. I was kindly sent this photo. It shows what was left of the old Volvo showrooms in Colindale, the other day. It was once the Wolverley Works of Alfred Gilbert & Sons, on The Hyde at Colindale, built in the 1930s. The company made office and stationery goods.

Jul 1935: FROG Interceptor Fighter Mark IV ad from International Model Aircraft Ltd «This box makes six flights possible in the time of one»
This advertisement promotes the FROG Interceptor Fighter Mark IV, a scale model airplane, which is crashproof with detachable wings, undercarriage, and propeller gear-box. The model is designed for easy launch and teaches real airplane behavior. Readers are encouraged to get a FROG to-day and start to learn flying.

This box makes six flights possible in the time of one

The FROG scale model aeroplane is the only one in the world to have a Patent Geared-up Winder Box. The FROG is crashproof, because the wings, under-carriage, and propeller gear-box drop off when the machine encounters an obstruction, and are replaced undamaged in a second. It can not only be launched by hand, but will rise off the ground. FROGS are used in many Flying Schools to show pupils how a real aeroplane behaves in the air. Get a FROG to-day and start to learn flying.
