We go to the woods to have our souls entangled. We go to the woods in hope of encountering wonder, wild magics. Some deep, cave-old part of us knows it as a sacred space just a we know it as a place of possible peril. The woods whisper to our souls. – #CLNolan #Woods

It is official. Treadwell's have signed copies of 'Hookland Fragments Volume One' back in stock with the exclusive Right To Reside card. www.treadwells-london.com/product-page...
Dear friend,

David Southwell dropped in to say hello this week, and it was wonderful to spend another afternoon with him. It also means signed copies of Hookland Fragments are once again available online and in-store. In other news, Here's a few of our upcoming events we're looking forward to...

At the shop on Thursday 17 September, Jules McArthur explores how religion and magic transformed in Roman Egypt after the fall of the last pharaoh, Cleopatra, in a period which birthed alchemy, hermeticism and the Greek Magical Papyri

No work will be done in Hookland today. It's the Puck Fairs. Epic bouts of storytelling, drinking, love-making and other funs of the fair. #Lughnasadh
August 1st – Puck Fairs
Starting on the old Celtic festival of Lughnasadh and lasting for two days, the Puck Fair is a pre-mediaeval tradition that is still going strong in Hookland. Associated with St. Urian and the faery folk, legend has it that the fairs started as the one point in the year when Hookland and Faeryland were close enough that trade between the two realms was possible. This is often offered as an explanation as to why the fairs used to be held on hilltops sacred to the faery. Whatever their actual origins, the Puck Fairs have become two days when an annual horse and cattle fair is supplemented by traditional matchmaking such as the 24-hour trial marriage (where the couple put together may separate at the end of the fair without any consequence), dances, bouts of wrestling and stick-fighting, horse races, story-telling contests and colossal amounts of drinking. Brutally suppressed during the Cromwellian Commonwealth, condemned by Methodists, often a source of modern moral outrage and an aggravation to the police, the Puck Fairs have proven to be a tradition that is exceptionally hard to kill off. Some have noted there is an increase in the number of people who disappear around the time of the Puck Fairs.

I write for myself and in doing that and refusing to pander to the middle class and the market, I am writing for the marginalised, the bruised and the weary. And as one of those folk, I can tell you, we bloody well need some re-enchantment.

Doctor Who: Fancied rewatching The curse of Fenric but could only find the disc containing the Making Of..bonus feature. Absolutely riveting doc, not least because the themes and ideas baked into the episode were so detailed but also how much it is left to the reader to work out.

Just noticed in Alan Moore’s whatever happened to the man of tomorrow, that Mister Mxyzptlk can be seen as a cipher for either an over aged fan demanding violence as realism in comic books, or a portent of eventual grim and gritty trends that would come to mark books of that era.

A bit of copy editing here to prevent awkwardness. The first sentence is about a statement: “My parents said…” The second is about a historical condition: “that was before”. Therefore, the word “that” can be misconstrued with the act of saying rather than the place of origin….(1/2)

Lads, Harry Hill is a legend
Did TV Burp cause any problems with anyone else?

The only person who took exception was Jamie Oliver. We did go a bit too far but we had a show to fill. He had a diagram on his show about: 'If you teach two people to make spaghetti Bolognese, then they teach two friends, in a week, X amount of people will know how to make it.' We did a diagram saying: 'If you tell two friends not to bother watching Jamie's Whatever It Is, and they tell two friends...' He hit the roof. After that he wouldn't give us any more clips.

Did you try to make amends?

The producer contacted me to say, 'Jamie's very upset. Can you do a video apologising to him?' So I did a video of me in my kitchen singing I Just Called To Say I Love You, then pulled out one of his pans, saying, 'Look, I've even got one of your pans.' The producer said he wasn't going to send it to him because it would have just made things worse.

One reflection on indie and small press comics: there is absolutely demand for new and novel books. Increasingly, I’ve found this more from a general crowd. Conventions can indeed stand on comics alone but we need more cons like this and regionally.
