Marvin Makes Messes pen and ink on wood panel 8 x 12 Clutter and mess show us that life is being lived... Anne Lamott Get the art: www.lolajovan.com/c/products/m... #art #monster #penandink #fantasyart #monsterart #blackandwhite #illustrationart #balloon Story-ALTtext⬇️

A pen and ink drawing of a monster in pajamas holding a balloon

The quote continues:

“Tidiness makes me think of held breath, of suspended animation... Perfectionism is a mean, frozen form of idealism, while messes are the artist's true friend. What people somehow forgot to mention when we were children was that we need to make messes in order to find out who we are and why we are here. “

Marvin gets it. His messes are just a step on the journey of his self-discovery.

You are so wise. If a person does not stop now and again, a stop will be forced upon them. Gah! Maddening, but this is how I learn, apparently? (And thanks a bunch for sharing!)

Stop Stop Stop oil on Yupo 11 x 18.5 Say Stop. Keep your lips pressed together after you say the p: from Instructions For Stopping by DANA LEVIN Get the art: www.lolajovan.com/c/products/s... Story-ALTtext⬇️ #art #painting #abstractart #oilpainting #abstractlandscape

An abstracted landscape in oil paint.

The poem continues:
“(soon they’ll try
and pry
your breath out—)
―
Whisper it
three times in a row:
Stop Stop Stop”

When we left off, I was counting a flock of chickens before they hatched.

Hiking chickens, adventure chickens, solitude and surf and sand chickens. That'll learn me. An unexpected medical complication landed me smack on the sofa for most of our planned vacation. Someone must have whispered STOP STOP STOP. (It wasn't me, I swear it!)
I will appreciate our next hiking adventure even more.

There is a silver lining in being forced to stop. When you can do very little, you spend a lot of time looking - looking at the art, the writing, the website, the shop, the dust accumulating on the bookshelves and the cobwebs in one's head and art practice. There are many insights simmering in the cauldron of my mind.

And so we shall see what kind of soup results from this slow simmer over the coming weeks and months. The Yupo fairy (a dear friend) dropped a heap of Yupo (in various formats I had never even heard of) on my doorstep and now the imagination is running and ooooohing and aaaaaaahing and generally making me impatient.

Soon. Soon. Soon.
