Hey @volts.wtf, on the subject of building data centres the not-stupid way, have you seen yesterday's announcement from @ec.europa.eu? We're putting labels on the data centres! 😃 Really impressed the final version seems to keep all the ambition of the drafts: ec.europa.eu/commission/p...
A screenshot of the template for the data sustainability labels. The top strip has an EU flag and basic information (name, operator, size category, location, etc.). The middle section is the largest, with three visual elements: a pie chart for sourcing of energy, a colour-coded A to G scale for Power Usage Efficiency, and the same for Water Usage Efficiency. The bottom strip has extra "Sustainability Features": contribution to new cpacity, flexibility to the grid, and waste heat reuse readiness. Each element has a line to a Roman numeral; the detailed explanations of each element are out of frame.

In 2024, I said that gas execs were nuts for trying to triple US export capacity into a scheduled global glut in LNG. I asked last year who would go bust in 2030 for that lunacy. Well. I was wrong. Bombs or blockades on 20% of the competition leave US fossil fuel investment looking prophetic ☹️ 🔌💡

🚨Breaking*: European response to crisis in Iran: targets for energy efficiency (-10%), for electrification (35% by middle of next decade, up from 25% today) and for import dependency (40%, down from ~60% today). Details on national implementation to follow! *Message seen: 53 years ago 🫠 #EUSky 🔌💡⚡
Screenshot of an archival document clearly written with an old typewriter. A truncated watermark says "of the European Commission". The title reads "A Summary of the objectives of an Energy Supply Policy for the Community in 1985". Below:

I. Energy Demand
To reduce estimated consumption in 1985 by 10% in relation to the amount initially estimated for 1985 by the more efficient use of energy.

In step with the development of nuclear energy, to increase the consumption of electricity, which should in 1985 represent 35% of energy consumption (25% in 1972).

II. Energy Supply
To limit to 40% (63% in 1973) in 1985 the degree of Community dependence for energy on outside sources.

To limit to 40% (60% in 1973) the share of oil in the overall energy supply.

To limit to 75% (98% in 1973) the degree of dependence on outside sources for oil supplies. This implies production of 180 mtoe in the Community.

To shift the emphasis of demand as a result, in particular by reducing consumption of heavy fuel oil in power stations.

Full text:

Demand aggregation and joint purchasing can play a strong role in accelerating market creation for energy sources and materials needed for clean energy production. By aggregating their demand
and adopting joint purchasing strategies in accordance with EU competition rules, EU buyers can leverage their collective economic weight, strengthen their negotiation position and negotiate
better prices and terms with suppliers. This approach was also adopted by major gas import countries in Asia. It is for example the case of Japan, who has a longstanding policy of supporting
investments in export infrastructure in LNG producing countries. EU joint purchasing power should be harnessed by exploring the option of longer-term contractual engagements to make prices more stable, whereby the EU and/or Member States accompany EU importers in investing directly in export infrastructure abroad, providing preferential loans to private investors, or by securing gas liquefaction rights. In addition, better coordination among Member States, with the
support of the Commission, and more flexibility can also help in refilling gas storage at better purchasing conditions during the filling season.
