Weekend #FishPuke. This largemouth bass puked up a few soft plastic baits after I caught it. I pick up a few dozen of these baits off of lake bottoms each year, and apparently bass do too!

😱Wow, in other news, Devil's Hole #pupfish just plummeted to an historic low of 20 fish this winter from 191 fish in the fall. Luckily, USFWS had a handy refuge population and *for the 1st time ever* reintroduced captive fish into the wild, doubling the population. www.nps.gov/deva/learn/n...

Saint Louis River sturgeon, a couple days before the season closes. This one went 55.75”. It’s the biggest one I’ve measured, but I believe I’ve caught bigger while walleye fishing on the Winnebago system.

2 brown trout population estimates complete. Handled around 1500 unique brown trout over 4 days, plus some bonus brookies, creek chubs, sculpin, white suckers, and Johnny darters. Now time to reset before walleye netting begins.

Folks, exactly 5 years ago today I made this offer, & I'll do it again. Many graduate students are in danger of losing their one field season for collecting data- in March 2020 because of the pandemic, now because of Musk-Trump BS. This means that many won't be able to finish graduate school. 🧪🧵

Lake Superior is neat. A bunch of smallmouth (almost all >17”), a brown trout, and a pike off of the same rock hump. Walleye, burbot, splake, coho, whitefish and cisco are all up for grabs here too, but none today

For context, the funding being terminated is 50% of Maine Sea Grant's budget. Cutting $4.5 million won't make a drop in the overall federal budget, but will decimate the program. Maine Sea Grant, like all Sea Grant programs, exists to serve the American people. The return on investment is huge.

I’m a federal employee, a research meteorologist at a NOAA lab (OAR-NSSL). I still have my job tonight. Many of my NOAA colleagues and many more of my fellow civil servants don’t. I want to share what people like me do. Instead of doomscrolling, maybe we can learn what civil service looks like.
